Chapter 1:

Dreamy Campsite

Journal entries from beyond time

We managed to find an old hut in the woods for us to camp at, which served as our home for a little while. The building was rather small and it was made up of plant-strengthened clay-mud bricks, a building material that was in use many decades ago in this region. We tried to make it a bit more homely, with the tents and inflatable mattresses we've brought. It wasn't the most comfortable thing, but we didn't have to sleep on the cold ground, were sheltered from the elements and we were rather far from the mall where everything began.

We were all quite tired and so everyone went to sleep, with the exception of two people, standing guard. As my mind was drifting off, I was wondering about what we should do next. Where do we even go from here?

The dream I had was quite vivid, making me question if it was even a dream. I was seeing events happen from a girl's perspective. She was on a camping trip in the mountains with many others her age, but the fun was short-lived, as the calamity began.

It was far more chaotic than what we've experienced at the mall. Compromised kids and adults alike were chasing after their peers, capturing them and making them one of their own. This girl, from whose perspective I saw things happen, tried to be cautious. She was hiding from the horde in one of the wooden huts until someone burst through the door. It was one of her peers, who was attempting to shake off a girl who very recently was taken over by the hive. A couple of strong hits on her head somehow resulted in her losing access to the hivemind and she let out a painful screech. This wasn't due to the probable concussion, but the loss of access. Her mind was between our world and theirs, not welcome by either. What an unfortunate fate.

Now, the protagonist of the dream decided to hide out this "storm". She found a nice little space in the attic, where she could hole up for a while. There was a mattress, sheets, a battery-powered small lamp, some snacks, and a book. Whoever was here before probably had no use for it now. She looked out of the window only to see the carnage ongoing, but unbeknownst to it and in contrast she calmly, yet with an undertone of worry, laid down in the bed, wondering about what to do next.

The dream jumps quite a bit here as she's managed to survive for two years. She's been sustaining herself by sneaking into the storage buildings nearby apparently. To her knowledge, no other "survivors" remained, other than her.
What has remained, though, was the horde outside. Though definitely thinned in numbers, they still walked about, perhaps because they sensed a non-tainted around. Maybe they simply hadn't received "orders", so they lie in wait. One thing is for sure, their senses hadn't dulled.

One misstep, one slight stumble, figuratively speaking, was all it took for her to be noticed. She got too careless and was found by one, then another, and ten more, until she was overrun. It all ended with a simple mistake.

The next scene was a strange one. Awfully quiet with a dreadful calmness.
There she laid in her bunk bed, surrounded by her friends as if nothing had ever happened. Their skeletons resting as if none of this ever occurred, and they simply fell asleep normally and just never woke up. Perhaps they were taken well before they were "overrun".

Was it simply a dream the hive showed her? But if she was taken why wasn't she out and about, corrupting others?
At the time I had many questions, but no answers. Only the melancholically peaceful sight of their skeletons laying in bed, undisturbed and forever resting. It was disturbing.

Then, I was shaken awake, as it was my turn now to stand watch. I sat down on a wooden crate outside and looked up at the sky. It was clear and the stars shone beautifully. Sitting there in quiet I wondered. Maybe we are dreaming as well? Maybe we are not? How can we know for sure?

I decided to stop worrying over it, as too much thinking would just make me hungry. We didn't bring much food anyways.
And so the night passed with no incidents to speak of.
