Chapter 9:

Bite this for me

Noa's Arc

The two-foot wide alleyway to our apartment feels like a dark tunnel under the looming clouds. A light drizzle has already begun to moisten our bodies. Gin holds the black grocery bag right in front of my face.

"Bite this for me."

"What? Hrgh?! Jyn?!"

He inserts the plastic bag's handles into my mouth and leaves it there, forcing me to bite down on them. Then he starts fishing for the door's key card in his pocket. Slightly bigger than a credit card, it has an aged bronze color and the number 27 written on it, the same number etched onto our metal sliding door. With a beep, the door unlocks and we step inside.

"Aaand voilà!"

Gin lightly taps the sensor right next to the door twice. The white fluorescent ceiling light flickers twice before staying lit. In the middle of the room is our kotatsu table, currently useless since we're in the middle of summer. At the center of it is Ro, our miniature synthetic flower planted in a ceramic pot the size of a shot glass.

Gin takes the plastic bag from my mouth and places it on the kitchen counter next to the clean, empty sink. Since we live in a studio apartment, everything is within ten steps from the kotatsu and Ro.

"That was disgusting and unnecessary."

Gin places my body next to his bed. With my back against the wall, I sit limply while he attaches my charging cable to the back of my neck, right onto my spine.

Charging... Current energy: 4%

"How's that?"

"Yes, I'm charging up."

"Cool, cool. I'll go cook dinner then."

"Don't set anything on fire."

"You have no faith in me do you?"

"Not when you somehow managed to start a fire with an electric stove."

A low bass-like vibration passes through my body. Thunder passes through our home and signals the worsening rain. Not too far the sound of waves crashing against the city's flood barriers can be heard.

"How long do you think it'll last?"

"Based on the recent ones, half a day to half a week."

The sound of sizzling chicken fills the silence and the aroma mixes with the rainy scent seeping from the outside. Gin turns to me with a glint in his eyes.

"So since, you won't be able to move for a while..."

Oh.

"How about we play a few games to pass the time?"

Oh no.
