Chapter 5:

Detective Mona

Maid School

“I am so hungry, I think I could eat a whole whale” said Mona as she opened her mouth as wide as she possibly could and took a big bite out of the bun she was holding.

“Mona you vulgar little girl” Ti said while pulling a slightly disgusted face.

“I am still hungry… but I have no money left to buy more food” said Mona with a sad face while her belly was still rumbling.

“That’s why you should take your time to eat your food and not just hog everything at once.”

“Maybe I should… Mother” Mona said with a big grin on her mouth as she turned to face Ti.

Ti looked slightly embarrassed but managed to compose herself: “Maybe you shouldn’t act like a little baby all the time.”

“Yeah… I am not gonna deny that” reacted Mona calmly.

Serena, who was observing this conversation the whole time, gave Mona half her bun, she didn’t have any hunger since she was really nervous.

“Please don’t be annoying” said Nia as she went to sit down next to the other girls.

“I slept hardly a minute”.

“Happy to see you too Nia” Mona greeted her.

Ti looked at Nia and asked: “Do you know where miss Rose is today?”

“Rose?. Be glad she isn’t here so I can finally have some rest.” Nia sighed as something was clearly going on between her and her roommate.

After a short pause, Nia elaborated: “She has been sneaking off deep at night for the last few days. It’s been troubling me”.

She paused again and then added: “Not that I care for her or anything, just because the noises keep waking me up.”

“Maybe she is looking for trouble” Mona said while letting her imagination run wild with all things she could be doing so late at night.

“What if she was behind the graffiti” Mona joked.

“Nia, you should report her to the school council, we can’t have a delinquent running around in these halls.”

“I don’t care for that” Nia reacted hotheaded, after she took a breath and said calmly: “I don’t want to get her in trouble, she has been nice to me.”

Ti agreed and the girls finished their lunch and went back to class.

Literature club

“Welcome, so your name is Serena?” Serena nodded, she was clearly really nervous.

“Nice to have you here, my name is Maika, the president of the literature club. I heard from your friend Ti you wanted to join the club since you really love reading books. You are the first one here today, please take a seat and wait for the other members to arrive.”

The president pointed at an empty seat and Serena went to sit down. While Serena was nervously playing around with her hair, another girl entered the room. She has long white hair and a really calm atmosphere around her. She noticed a nervous Serena sitting at the table and walk towards her and asked with a quiet voice: “Nice to have you here. Do you like some tea?”

Serena nodded in agreement. A minute or so later, Yuki came back with a pot of tea and gave Serena some tea to calm down. She recognized herself in Serena. Two years ago when she went to join the club she also was really nervous at first.

After drinking some of her tea Serena was able to relax a little bit. By now, the other members had joined and Maika went to stand at the head of the table.

“Good afternoon everyone! I am so excited to introduce you all to our new member Serena. Can you tell us something about yourself?”

Being put on the spot the effect of the calming tea was instantly nullified and Serena began panicking again. Her face turned red and she began to stutter but nothing coherent came out. Then Yuki put her hand on Serena’s shoulder and looked her in the eyes.

She whispered in Serena’s ear: “Just say hi to them.”

This gave Serena the courage to mumble out a quiet: “Nice to meet you”.

After this introduction, the group continued reading and discussing the book they were currently reading. Luckily Serena, had already read this book before so she had no trouble catching up.

After the meeting was done, Yuki came to Serena “Glad you decided to join our club. We will be selecting the next book to read, could you bring in one of your favorites next time?”

Though the thought of having to convince the others to read her book scared her a bit, the excitement of being able to share her hobby with these people was enough for her to join the club. She already had a great book in mind.

A nightly adventure

That same night, Mona sneaked out of her room as soon she thought Serena was asleep. She snuck through the hallways, really careful so she didn’t get caught by any of the security guards. Just like one of those spy games she thought to herself. As soon as she reached her destination, she hid behind a trashcan and waited. Half an hour later, the dorm door across her got slowly opened. Rose, Nia’s roommate appeared in front of the door, dressed in a hoody and wearing a baseball cap. As Rose started to move, Mona made sure to follow the unsuspecting Rose from a close distance. After a long tour through the school's many windy hallways, they entered the basement, a part of the school Mona had never been to before. Mona saw Rose entering an abandoned-looking room, with cobwebs hanging all over. After a while, Rose left the room and went upstairs. Mona decided to follow her on the way back and went back to her own dorm room. For the next few hours, Mona lay in bed contemplating all kinds of weird stuff Rose could have been doing in the scary abandoned room.

The next day during lunchtime, Mona pulled Ti, Rose, and Serena together and dragged them off to the hallway, away from their canteen table where they usually eat together.

“I made a big discovery yesterday!” she proclaimed to her friends.

After explaining what happened last night, Nia suddenly gave Mona a slab.

“Idiot! Why did you follow her last night, you stalker!”

Still shocked by Nia’s emotional outburst, Mona tried to explain herself: “I am sorry Nia, I was just curious and tried to help you out.”

Nia took a big breath and said: “Whatever, it’s okay. Could you bring me there? I want to see it for myself”

“Deal” responded Mona instantly, already hoping for the girls to agree to go with her.

“The basement? Isn’t that off-limits for students?” Ti reacted a bit skeptical. “I don’t want to break the rules! Maybe we should tell a teacher.”

“Let’s first collect some more evidence, otherwise they are not gonna believe us.” A reassured Ti agreed to join the group.

Room B.38

Later that day, the girls met up after class and decided to head toward the school's basement.

“Ahh a spider” Ti screamed once she entered the basement.

“Brrr… Why is it so scary in here? Let’s head back” Mona persisted and was eventually able to locate the room again.

“Are you sure this is it?” asked Nia.

“Room B.38 I am certain.” Mona tried to open the door, but it seemed to be locked.

“Let me try!” Nia tried herself but to no avail. They tried to look in the room via the window next to the door, but due to the darkness and dirty windows, they weren’t able to make out anything.

Disappointed by the fact they weren’t able to enter the room Nia said: “Why would Rose come to this shithole at night? This is really suspicious indeed.”

Ti then carefully proposed: “I might be able to get a key tomorrow so we can enter this room.” The girls decided to go back and investigate the room the next day.
