Chapter 43:

People don't go out driving during a flash storm for a reason

Noa's Arc

"Are you sure, I'm doing this right?"

"Apply a bit more pressure."

Through Deci's and Micro's eyes, I see my face module jutting out of my head. I'm on the sofa with my head facing up, the same as last time Milli adjusted my face. I help Deci by holding parts still while dictating to them how Milli did it based on memory.

"This is a lot harder than I thought it would be. We've been at this for an hour now."

"My battery's almost full as well."

"So not only were you watching Milli do this from her eyes, you were also storing it in your long term memory?"

"I figured it would be worthwhile information to remember."

After a bit more fiddling, we finish up and my face module clicks in place. I stand up and check the mirror on the wall.

"Are you sure this is alright? Posing as Nano, I mean."

"It's fine. It's the only face I know to switch to and if incorrectly calibrated, the face module won't pop back in. We'd be here for hours trying to come up with a new face."

Deci still has worry plastered on their face. They look to Micro, floating at his eye level.

"Watch over her, alright?"

Micro whirs in affirmation, then our phones beep consecutively. We both check and on my phone's cracked screen is a flash storm warning. Deci clicks their tongue in frustration.

"Great. As if things couldn't get any worse."

"No, this is perfect."

I pull out the cable attached to my nape. On an end table is a packet of PalettePills. I take one and swallow. My hair turn icy white and a single streak of blue and purple each follow.

"Street drones don't work during a flash storm and my image will be heavily obscured. I'll be sure to avoid cameras on my way there as well."

"That's not the problem. People don't go out driving during a flash storm for a reason."

"I'll be careful."

Deci gives a heavy sigh.

"You're just as reckless as Centi too. Fine, but promise me you'll drive slowly. Milli told me all about your little joyride with her last time."

Deci's eyes trail to the window facing the setting sun. I stare out as well. Dark clouds build and approach. Flashes of lightning crackling within them in the distance.

"I'll be going then."

With the motorcycle's key in hand I head for the door. Deci doesn't even look my way. I am met with a somber silence I close the door behind me.

While riding the elevator down to the basement, I check my person for anything I may have forgotten. I've already changed to the black motorcycle suit. A small red bag is strapped to my waist. The bag is positioned right above my right buttock and serves as a sort of carrying case for Micro.

The elevator doors open and I quickly head towards the matte black motorcycle. Perhaps after this I'll have it painted for good measure. Though the cost is not something I look forward to. I put on the helmet and the visor's minimalistic UI lights up. It adjusts the brightness automatically to preferable levels.

The X-fram3's engine thrums after I insert the key. I drive it to the exit where a stationed security droid opens the garage doors for me. I ride up the sloped cement into the street where light rain has just arrived.

The wind is starting to pick up, not only from the speed at which I'm driving. I've only come across four vehicles so far. The roads are near empty thanks to the storm, though as much as I'd like to ride straight to my destination, I've had to circumvent the street cameras to the best of my abilities. The ARC helps me detect and determine how they're positioned so with any luck the few times I came into the corner of the frame will be overlooked.

Finally in front of me is the road leading to District 17. From here on out is unknown territory to me. No one is around and I'm not sensing any devices around so I drive right in. It doesn't take long for the surroundings to turn from neon and concrete to urban slum. There are still tall buildings left and right but more than half of them seem abandoned or dilapitated.

I navigate the streets, avoiding areas where I detect multiple rPhones and cybernetics. After five minutes, I find what I'm looking for: readings of multiple androids clumped up.

Searching for Device QISP177736... Device found.

I drive as close as I can to the direction of the scan. I park the motorcycle in a dark, narrow alley. I take off the helmet and place it on the motorcycle, facing the alley's entryway. Carefully, I peek out. Micro detaches from his carrying case and hovers next to me, looking wherever I'm not.

All clear. The rain is turning heavy and the sky is dark. The sheet of thick clouds rumble as lightning flashes far away. A large warehouse towers where the android readings are, as well as over a dozen other devices.
