Chapter 11:

Act 11: Names

The Last Human

Not a single light illuminated the narrow pathway to central. The outlines of human-sized pipes, sprouting out of the walls like roots leading deeper into the darkness, were barely seeable. Spes grabbed his hand the moment she tripped over something and nearly fell.
"Si... Silus I... I can't see anything." She stuttered
"Don't worry," he held her hand even tighter, "my eyes can see." He hated the itchy feeling of the night vision function in his eyes. "I'm more worried that central knew that we were coming," Silus mumbled.
Beams of lights ran down the pipes sprouting out of the walls in irregular intervals, illuminating the tunnel for a brief moment each time.
"Can I ask you something, Silus?" The girl next to him looked up at his face.
"What is it?" He said coldly after hesitating for a second.
"Why Spes? Why did you choose that name for me." She looked down to the ground, trying not to trip again.
"What do yo-"
"I mean Zero was named that way because he was the very first AI prototype and you were named after the dead husband of your creator. So the names given to someone are always given for a reason right?" She continued talking ignoring what he wanted to say. "So, what is the reason behind my name?"
Spes thought to have heard him sigh but couldn't see it in the darkness.
"It comes from an old human language which has since long been forgotten. Even though many languages derived from it." He jumped over a cable in his path. "But to answer your question without all the unnecessary information, it means hope."
Spes opened and closed her mouth like a fish without any sound coming out of it.
"Yes, you are carrying the hope of humanity and my own with you. That's why I named you Spes." Silus answered the question she couldn't ask. "We should quit talking now." He pointed forward in the distance where a faint light shone the way.
