Chapter 3:

Bunny and Bear

Days Counting

Along the way, I thought, ‘Where am I going anyway?’ it’s the only thing I have in mind right now, the rest is empty. My legs are essentially moving on their own, step by step along the asphalt road.

A car eventually comes behind me and doesn’t seem to pass me at all. I want to ignore the implications as I want to continue being buried in my singular thought. The limousine accelerates, driving by my side. I can hear a click and then a sliding sound. It looks like I have to face the music.

I sigh, then begrudgingly stop.

“Seth!”

A cute and slightly squeaky voice grabs my attention. I turn to the voice and see the grin of a girl whose face is as equally cute as her voice... By the looks of her, she’s petite; there’s a pink highlight on the right side of her violet hair; her twin tails over to the front; her big pink bow contrasts her dark mane. This might be a bit much, but I find it all too adorable!

Here I was, thinking the day couldn’t get any brighter. She looks at me with intense twinkles in her pearly white eyes. “Yeah?” I said in response.

“Get in!” she yelled with a surprisingly commanding tone. I don’t think I have any pressing agendas for today, so why not? After all, I don’t want to deny a cute company.

Inside the limo is perhaps the largest interior of any car I ever saw in my life—so far, I guess. The pristine caramel white leather couches complement the dark gray carpet. I thought ‘couches’ because calling them seats would be an understatement. Stepping on the floor made me feel guilty, not only because it feels like I'm standing on soft fur, but also because it feels like I should’ve left my flip-flops outside the door. The rest of the atmosphere smells like it’s littered with just the right amount of oak-scented lavender—enough that it doesn’t compete with what seems to be the girl’s perfume.

This experience makes me feel extremely embarrassed and self-conscious about myself. I shouldn’t have gotten in this girl’s limousine, but oddly enough, it feels like it’s second nature.

“I have to sit a mile away from her. I don’t want to sully her fragrance with my stench,” I thought, wiping a non-existent tear. I mumble, “I’m sorry for ruining your image.”

“Whaaat?” she shouted from the sun all the way to the earth. I cover my face. I don’t want her to look at someone as low as me! However, she just laughs it off, seemingly unaware of my current plight . “You’re being funny again, Seth!” She presses a button and it slowly closes the interior window between the driver and passenger seats. I notice the female driver staring in my direction through the rearview mirror just before the window completely shuts. I have a feeling she’s not just your average limo driver. She’s keeping an eye out for me as well.. The girl suddenly pants in front of me, I realize she must’ve run a marathon to get to my seat. Poor girl, I should’ve just sat next to her. Despite my concern, I couldn’t help but gag from bursting out laughing. This is just too funny to ignore.

She says, panting, “S-Seth, you big meanie!” I finally give in to the hysteria, I hope it isn’t too mean-spirited. My reservation was unfounded though, given that she’s starting to laugh herself.

After calming down, I look at her flushed face, her sweat trickles down even further. In hindsight, I think she was already following me, perhaps even calling my name. The amount of sweat on her face indicates that she most likely walked behind me. Who is this girl and why do I hate seeing her like this?

Seeing my intense eyes on her, she smirks. “What are you staring at? Is there something on my face?” I snap my eyes away and realize that I’ve been building a pang of guilt in my throat, although my heart tells a different story. One that harbors the feeling of protecting her at all costs. All of those emotions, and I can still feel the fluttering inside my stomach. Haven’t I already made a promise to Ruby?

The girl suddenly pushes herself against me, her boobs eating my whole arm alive. Things just got a whole lot more complicated now that I can only think of two soft things right now.

“Why were you walking, Big Bear?”

Big Bear, I scoff. A nickname for me. Great. A trickle of sweat races down the side of my cheek. I don’t want to sully someone so pure any longer. Get back up, human sauce!

“Oh my, Seth, why are you starting to sweat all of a sudden?” Her smirk turns to a smug grin. “You seem to be nervous. Was it because… how is your sweat traveling itself up?!”

Strained and stiff as a rock, I struggle to turn my cracking face toward her and reply, “One of my awesome powers, I guess.”

“That’s so gross!” she said, her face cringing but giggling at the same time. I exhale a sigh of relief as she releases her hold on my arm and wipes my face with a handkerchief. My nose twitches unexpectedly from the scent of her own sweat, but I don’t really find the smell bad. “H-Hey! If you think my hanky stinks—it’s your fault you didn’t notice me calling for you from behind!” she said, with an angry expression that bleeds into my soul.

The same face when…

“Oh, hey! You finally wore the legendary deluxe Titan Thunder Prestige Collector’s Edition shoes I gave you!” she burst out.

I let out a weak chuckle. I would have told her that she didn’t need to be specific... if it weren’t for the burning sensation coursing through my neck. I had broken a lot of things... and I could finally say now that stomping on one of her most cherished gifts is the straw that would break the camel’s back. I am really that far gone, to the point of destroying the things I hold dear. I just remembered I took these shoes out of my “sister’s” room, lying on the floor. That crazy girl, wait till I get home and-

“Bear, what’s with that creepy smile on your face?”

I slowly turn to her and reply, “It’s just that... I’m just so happy. Happy that the one I love notices how proud I am to show her gift to everyone.”

She stares at me silently. Eventually, she hugs me tight, “Oh Seth, I can’t believe you finally said the big L word to me!”

Lesbians? Oh, who am I kidding here…

Her eyes skitter as her mouth looks like it’s about to blow up. “I love you too!” she squealed, attempting to crush my neck with her arms. Despite digging myself deeper into my own grave, I found myself ecstatic when she said she loves me, along with the breaking realization that what I said was something I just blurted out in the heat of the moment. What makes everything even worse is that she’s starting to cry because -I- started to cry. “I already have everything I want, but you still manage to make me the happiest girl ever.” She sniffs and glares at me dead straight into my soul. “I’m going to buy you all the legendary deluxe Titan Thunder prestige collector’s edition collectibles in the whole galaxy! Wait, no! Everything of Titan Thunder’s collection in existence,” she said through the torrent of waterfall coursing from her eyes; behind the curtain is a scorching flame of determination enough to evaporate the wet on my face.

“C’mon, you don’t need to do that,” I lied.

“Bear, when I say everything, I. Mean. Everything!”

I inexplicably paint a bittersweet smile. “Like I said, you don’t need to give me anything more, Pearl,” I hug her close enough not to literally crush her, “Everything I need is already in my arms.”

She completely breaks out bawling. “B-But I’m literally not enough by myself when you are literally everything!”

I can’t help but bawl myself, “B-But sweet Bunny, everything means nothing if I ain’t got you!” I really hope the chauffeur didn’t hear all this cheesy crap. However, that small gap below the window doesn’t help my assurance. Well, it doesn’t really matter right now when both Pearl and I are competing on who can fill the indoor swimming pool faster.

After the raging storm subsides, we’re now lying on the couch together. She is resting on half of my body. I purposely place myself on the edge, of course. Seeing her teary eyes reminds me of the past.

She was weeping on the pristine marble floor with her hands covering her face, trying her best to stifle the tears. I knelt in front of her, but before I could place a hand on her shoulder, she launched herself into my torso. She couldn’t hold back any longer and sobbed uncontrollably.

A sharp sensation pierced through my heart, pushing itself ever deeper the more she cries.

“This will be the last time you’ll ever cry, Sweet Bunny. I’ll never bring you down again,” I whispered to her ear. Ruby, on the other hand, stares blankly at me, then to her sister.
