Chapter 7:

Unexpected help

As the dust settles

As Sky's eyes opened, they tried to adjust to the bright room. She wasn't sure how much time had passed since her encounter with the thieves, but it was now obviously daytime. The sunlight was finding its way through a massive window to her right. The pane's were around three doors wide and ran from the ceiling to the floor, which explained why it was so bright in here. Unlike all the other interiors Sky had seen, the rest of the room looked clean and very fancy. Almost as if it had been untouched by what was happening outside.

The room was a sort of dull grayish white color. On each side of the windows were long, drawn back, green curtains. Both of which were draped over the same length as the windows. On opposite side of the bed was a dark brown, wooden door. As she was looking over, she also noticed a small bed side table standing next to the bed. By the wall in front of her was a desk. Although, from where Sky could see, it hadn't been used in a while as she could make out a thick layer of dust covering the top of the desk.

Sky made an attempt to sit up, but as she did the room began to spin. She grab her head, making an attempt to calm her mind, while also fighting the urge to pass out again. But as hard as she tried, her body was still weak. There was no chance for her to fight with this so, once again, Sky fell back into a dark slumber. By the time she awoke once more the sun was beginning to set. But there was something else that was different about the room. There, sitting next to her bed, was another person.

Sky jolted awake and jumped out of bed, nearly falling over in the process. As before she still felt a little lightheaded, now feeling a nauseous after her sudden movement. But this time she was able to somewhat handle it, while also keeping herself propped up against the wall. This person on the other hand seemed quite startled by Sky's sudden movement. They were now standing, the stool that she once sat on was now knocked to the ground.

The lady that stood before Sky was dressed in what looked to be an old nurses outfit. Sky had been shown pictures of these in a few history books. But the clothes looked a little long for how short she was. But that wasn't the only thing that was longer than the rest of rest of her. Even though her auburn hair was tied back it still reached down to the back of her knees. Her face had such a welcoming and gentle look, with freckles that were scattered all over and her bright green eyes.

"I'm not here to harm you. A group of people over by a nearby tavern happened upon you and one of your friends. They brought both of you over here immediately, and it's very lucky that they did! You both were in pretty bad shape when you were came in." The lady said as she composed herself. She also tried to be calm and reassuring, as she realized that Sky was just as startled as she was.

Sky, after being reminded of what happened, placed her hand on where she had been struck. Thankfully her arm was still attached, but it was in this moment that she realized that it was now bandaged up. Surprisingly there wasn't much pain but her arm still felt a bit tender. Although it mustn't have fully healed as blood was slowly seeping through the bandage. Possibly not liking her moving around so much. The lady sighed as she began rummaging through her first aid bag that sat on the ground beside her.

"May I please get you to lay back down into your bed? Although you may feel much better, that wound was very deep. It still has much more time before it full heals."

Doing as she was told, Sky laid back on the bed. Making sure not to put any more strain on her injured arm. The last thing she wanted to do right now was piss off the one person that could, and was willing to, help her. Let alone a healer within god knows how many miles. She wanted to make sure she was in good shape if she was to go after Crystal. The nurse effortlessly finished cleaning and re-bandaging the wound.

"Just so you know, you'll be here for a little while. At least until you're well enough to leave. So, in the mean time, I need you to continue resting and not use your injured arm so much. Meanwhile I'll do my best to look after you for the duration of your stay. Firstly I'll get you something to eat and drink while you're still awake. Is there any dietary restrictions that I need to know about?"

Sky shook her head and the nurse smiled and nodded before giving a slight bow. As she did she grabbed her first aid bag and took her leave. Once more the room was back to being still and quite. Only the rustling of the leaves in the wind and chirping of birds could be heard beyond the confides of the room and through the now open window.

While Sky sat there her mind began to wonder. Everything that had happened within the past few weeks flooded her brain. She had so many thoughts and question about everything that had been going on. About how strange and surreal it all was. Was there something that Meredith and Abby hadn't been telling her? Why did they have to kill Isaac? Who exactly were those two thieves and what were they, and their faction, planning on using the axe for? But, more importantly what was so god damn important about this axe?

But her thinking was suddenly interrupted by the sounds of footsteps coming down the hallway outside her room. As the door opened a nurse entered. But this was not the same nurse that Sky had met just moments ago. This one was a bit slimmer in build, not to mention taller. His very vibrant, dark blue hair on the other hand was what made her realize that. As he walked past the the window, and the sunlight beamed upon him, Sky noticed that there was a strange blue tint to his skin. But he was still wearing the same uniform as the lady before.

"Here you are m'am! I was told by Daisy to bring this to you as she was requested to attend to another urgent matter."

It was then that Sky noticed that he was carrying something. He was holding a tray with a plate that held a couple of pieces of toast with a sweet smelling jam spread on them. There were also what looked to be some scrambled eggs. Beside all the delicious looking food was a strange smelling red drink. Sky tentatively accepted the tray. But, as much as her stomach protested, there were still a few questions that she wanted to ask before she ate.

"You mentioned the name Daisy. Was this perhaps the woman that I met earlier?"

"Yes indeed it was! Isn't she just so lovely! She was the one that took me under her wing and taught me everything there is to know about how to be a healer!" His eyes lit up as he continued to gush about Daisy. He seemed to really care about her.

"As much as I would love to hear you go on about how amazing Daisy is, I do have a few more questions I would like to ask." The man, slightly embarrassed, blushed. He looked down, all the while smiling, but he stayed quiet so Sky could continue speaking. "Daisy mention my friend, does he happen to be here as well?"

"Oh yes, he is! He happens to be just down the hall from this room. We usually don't get many patients out here as we're very secluded. There's only a few certain travelers who know of our existence."

"How is he doing?" Sky was very hesitant to ask.

"Don't you worry, he's doing just fine! He's very lucky that he's a werewolf otherwise that wound would have certainly killed him! Although whatever caused it seems to be slowing his regenerative healing. Since he awoke a few days ago he's been quite restless." As if on cue some animalistic screams could be hear a few doors down. The man that had been talking to Sky became visibly uncomfortable. "I should get going. Daisy and the others will need all the extra help they can get. If you need anything, just give us a yell."

As he said that glanced over at the door. He hesitated for a moment more, looking as if he was too terrified to go. But as the commotion worsened out there he gave a quick bow to Sky before bolting out the door. Since Sky couldn't really leave her bed for now, nor did she want to confront that man, she let her hunger take over.

By the time she eventually finished her meal the commotion outside had subsided. Although there was a different kind of loud voice now coming from the hallway. This one was a bit more comprehensible and not at all animalistic. Like a mother telling off its child. Whoever it was did not sound to happy with whoever they were yelling at. Sadly Sky could not eavesdrop as she was unable to decipher what was being said. Whoever was making all the ruckus was talking in a different language.

Once they appeared to be done several footsteps could be heard hurrying in different directions, as if to distance themselves as far away from this person as they could. But two distinct footsteps could be heard making their way to Sky's room. She had a feeling she knew who they were moments before they hurried through the door. Daisy and the blue haired boy bowed upon entry before speaking to Sky.

"We apologize for the commotion you surely heard. We hope it didn't upset you too much. You friend should, hopefully be fine now. He shouldn't be causing any more problems. We've made sure of that." Daisy tried to be reassuring but that was a job she obviously wasn't skilled enough at.

"He won't try to do anything to me will he? He seemed pretty upset earlier." Sky was a little concerned. Especially with all the noises he was making. Along with the sound of many thing breaking.

"He most certainly won't be doing any harm to you. We'll make sure of that! The inject-potion we gave him will have a lasting effect. At least until he's far enough away from this place." The other nurse interjected.

"But we'd request if you want to see your friend that you get one of us to let you in, as his door is to remain locked for now. Al though your still in need of rest, as I said earlier. In a few days you'll hopefully be up on your feet!" Daisy tried to sound as optimistic as she could. "Again, if you need anything, don't be afraid to call on me or Lunar. I have a bell here that you can ring, which I'll put on your bedside table. Don't worry though we'll be able to hear it from anywhere within the house. But for now we part ways as we both have chores that we need to get back too."

They gave another courteous bow before taking a swift leave. Over the next few boring days Sky remained stuck in bed. As much as she hated it she knew that it was for the best. Especially if she wanted a fighting chance beyond these walls. But, by the start of the next week, Sky was finally allowed to leave her bed and begin walking around. She still wasn't fully recovered as her wound still had a little bit of healing to do.

Sky didn't want to leave this place just yet anyway. While she had been bed bound Sky had much time to think about what her plans were going to be. There wasn't much info to go on, but there might be somebody that could give it to her. As much as Sky wanted to avoid him, the only person that could give her any idea of where to go was the werewolf directly down the hall from her.

As she walked over to the door Sky hoped that maybe one of them had left the door unlocked. She only hoped for this as Sky was worried about them overhearing their conversation. If they found out they weren't actually friends then they might not let her anywhere near him. Then she'd loose her chance to find out what was going on. She'd also be stuck on what to do and where to go.

But that plan all came unraveled as, when she turned the doorknob, it became quite apparent that the door was indeed still locked. Sky cursed then turned back the way she came. The only thing she could do was find one of the nurses to open the door. Sky hoped that she could avoid this but there wasn't much else she could do. If she had the right tools it would've been easy to pick lock it. But, sadly, Sky didn't have any of her tools as they were taken from her when she was brought in.

So Sky begrudgingly when down the stairs, which were a few steps away from where she stood, and went to find someone that could help her. She passed many nurses on each of the floors but none of them she wasn't comfortable asking for help. After heading down a few flights of stairs Sky did spot somebody that she knew, Lunar. It wasn't hard to spot him as his blue hair stood out from everyone else.

It didn't much to convince him to unlock the door for her. He seemed almost a little too eager, like he would rather be doing anything other than doing his chores. Sky didn't realize how many flights of stairs she had gone down until they were back up at the top, now out of breath. As Sky stood there trying to catch her breath Lunar took out a chain containing multiple keys. All of the keys looked strangely like one another. Without hesitation Lunar picked one of the keys and unlocked the door, as having done this one too many times.

Before turning the doorknob Lunar closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He slowly peered in, looking as if he was having second thoughts and run away at any moment. But still, trying to put a brave face on for Sky, he stood his ground. As he opened the door wider so that Sky could enter she noticed the heavy breathing , but it wasn't coming from either Lunar or herself.

"Your friend appears to be awake. But still, please be careful. I'll be waiting nearby in case anything happens." Lunar talked in a hushed tone, as if afraid of being heard. Looks like he was also too afraid to enter the room with her, which Sky didn't mind too much.

This room was quite dark compared to hers. Where the giant window was had now been covered by the drawn curtains. Although it blocked out most of the light, small streaks of sunlight still found gaps to shine through. As her eyes began to adjust to the room it dawned on her that there was something wrong about this room. Possibly because of the lack of furniture, or for the fact that there appeared to be claw marks all over the room.

"Whatever it is, make it quick. I can only stand the smell of you for so long" Axis growled at her. He was sitting upright in his bed, which appeared to be the only thing left in this room. Apart from that he had also silver chains tying him to the bed.

"What's so important about the axe and why did you want it so badly?" Sky tried to put on brave, all the while getting straight to the point. Axis sighed and rolled his eyes before answering.

"We weren't told exactly but it was worth something. Enough to put a hefty reward to anyone that could retrieve it. There has been some fighting over it. Not only from our factions, but from others too."

"Valuable enough that others would be willing to betray one of their own?"

"That was, unfortunate. But I was too distracted by greed that I didn't see it coming." The look on his face described exactly how he felt. Like he was angry yet disappointed in himself.

"So, where about do you think she'd be heading now?"

"Probably back to our faction to reap the rewards and boast about how she did it all herself. Now before you start thinking I'm gonna tell you exactly where that is, just because I've so easily given you all the other information. Even if she betrayed me there's no way in hell I'm telling scum like you about the whereabouts of our faction. I might as well have died back out there if I did!"

Before the conversation could continue any further they were interrupted by the door bursting open. In walked one of the nurses, who happened to be carrying a tray full of different meat. But there also seemed to be something different on this tray. Something Sky certainly didn't receive with her meals. A giant syringe with a strange clear liquid within.

"Oh, so sorry m'am. I didn't realize anyone else was in here. But it's nice to see that he's getting visitors! Although I will have to ask if you could leave for a few moments. As you can see it is now his feeding time."

As annoyed as she was, Sky thought it was best to step out for a little while and let him cool down for a moment. Axis seemed to be in a stubborn, angry mood today. There was no point continuing the conversation anyway. Not while that nurse was around. That was possibly all she was going to get out of him today anyway.

Many more days passed in which Sky had several more conversations with her friend down the hall. She tried everything she could to get him to point her in the right direction. But it was all useless. He was the only hope she had left of getting that axe back, but he wouldn't budge. She certainly couldn't go back to where she was attacked. Even if she somehow managed to find the place, Sky had been stuck in here for too long now. Any evidence that had been left in that place would've washed away long ago.

By this point she had overstayed her welcome and the staff seemed to be a little pushy about getting her to leave. As much as she wanted to do as many attempts to extract more information out of Axis there was nothing more she could do. It was like talking to a brick wall at this point. Plus she had some unfinished business to take care of. Even if she had no idea of how she was going to take care of it. There was no point in wasting any more time here.

"Thank you for everything you guys have done. It means everything to me. I wish there was something more that I could do or give other than my words of thanks and gratitude."

"It's nothing at all! Seeing you well again means a lot more than you think." Daisy said with a smile on her face.

Both Daisy and Lunar had come out the front to bid Sky farewell. Before either of them could bow as they usually would, Sky rushed up to them and gave them a big hug. As she pulled away after a long embrace both of the nurses were blushing. Sky began to giggle at the sight. This sent of Lunar into a giggling fit which, in turn, made Daisy start giggling.

With that happy moment Sky parted ways with the two nurses still chuckling away. The further away she got the more anxious she felt. With no plan, she had no idea of where to go. Sky knew that she had to go after the axe but at this point, was it even worth it? Why was she even bothering with this stupid thing? All it's done is brought her pain!

When she realized that there wasn't anything else out there for her, it scared her. Because without out it, she had no more purpose. No one she could go back to. No one she can fully trust. The more helpless and insignificant she felt the more her mind felt overwhelmed. That was before a familiar feeling started to take a hold of her once again. Her mind was completely fogged over and she was, once again, taken control of.
