Chapter 14:

Why not...me?

Seeking Utopia

At the Pathology department in Harmony’s central hospital, Hari; a Resident, sat in his office reading through news about the outbreak announced earlier today. They had received orders from above to prepare a team of specialists which would head to Neo Tapica tomorrow morning. Hari being in his last year of residency was asked to be part of the team along with Dr. Lina; a Consultant in Pathology. Although it would serve as great experience, he couldn’t shake off the uneasiness he felt about the whole situation.

All of a sudden there was a knock at his door. “Yes? Come in,” he said as he closed the tab about the news from his screen. Sonata; an intern, walks into his office. She seemed to have come here in a rush as she paused to catch her breath for a moment before talking. “Doctor, about the team-“ he let out a sigh as she said that. He knew what she was about to request, especially since he had worked with her previously. “Let me guess, you want to join as well?” She seemed to be caught off guard for a second then says, “So you knew… how come you didn’t ask me…”

“It’s too dangerous for you-“

“But you asked Luis to join!”

“Luis has more experience first of all. And second he…”

“He what? That he would contribute more? That he is smarter? I just heard that he does not even what to be part of it. In fact that is how I found out about the team in the first place.”

Hari had hoped that Sonata would not find out about this so soon. Although it’s true that Luis was more experienced and is also very smart, but Sonata had impressed him the most out of all the medical students that he interacted with so far. She was full of passion and never complained even if the work was too much for a student to handle. She may be a valuable asset to the team but the fact that she does not have sufficient experience; and was very young, made him hesitant to have her join.

“Look Sonata, personally I’d love to have you be part of the team but I’m not sure that Dr. Lina and the rest would be fine with a student; that is at your current level, joining.” She stayed quiet for a moment, then with a serious expression on her face she asks, “So, all I need is Dr. Lina’s approval…right?” He nods slowly. She smiles and says, “Alright then, thanks Dr.! Enjoy the rest of your day.” She waves at him and leaves his office.
