Chapter 20:

Chapter XIX – Wherein the setting completely changes and the narrator is a bit confused.

The Errant Otherworlder: How I survived in a setting that lacked systems, cheat skills and proper customer support.

Hello, dear reader. Currently I’m in quite the sticky situation. You might rightfully wonder; how can the narrator / author be in trouble?

Well, the trouble is that Watanabe has suddenly disappeared. He was sleeping in the inn, and in the next moment, he wasn’t. Gone, just like how he disappeared from Japan.

I think he might have been whisked off to a place that lacks a narrator. I can’t as smoothly follow the protagonist to the dreaded dimensions with 1st person narration. Can you see him, dear reader? I hope you are enjoying whatever is happening to our hero right now. Maybe he is finally on his way to acquire a harem? Wouldn’t that be just wonderful.

Wait a second, is that him? I sense that he is returning!

Oh. That was just my imagination. Watanabe’s still not here.

Well, if he’s not coming to me, then I’ll come to him. Away we go, to a new setting!

“Miss Goddess, I’m not Haruhito. I’m Haruto.”

Oh, there he is. Ahem, okay, time to go back to narrating.

“Wait, you are not Haruhito? Do- Did the guys over at HR get the wrong person again?!” exclaimed the woman in front of Watanabe.

“HR Department… Do you work for the Tu-somethingoranother Interdimensional Army?” asked Watanabe. He reminisced his time with the masked man. She’s probably not a goddess then, just another employee.

“Hm? How do you know about them? According to the file, you’re from Earth, we haven’t made official contact with the population there.” asked back the woman.

“Well, you see, this is my second time dying. They accidentally sent me over to the customer support department when I died last time.” replied Watanabe. “Could you send me back? I have a person I really need to apologize to.”

“Well, you did actually die. That part isn’t wrong. An undiagnosed heart condition led to cardiac arrest while you were sleeping, according to the information I’ve got about you.” The woman sighed. “Look, I can’t send you back without the higher ups getting angry, and I really need someone to defeat that so-called Demon King for me.”

“If I defeat him, then could you send me back?”

“Hmm, yeah. I could risk that if you get this one favor done for me. My job is in the line right now, so just defeat the big bad evil guy and I’d be in a good enough position to send you back.”

“I have prepared all my life, death, re-life, re-death and now re-re-life for this moment! Just give me my cheat-skill and you shall see instant results!” said Watanabe. He smiled in a smug manner. This kind of stuff is my jam, time for a speedrun that is out of this world!

“Then let’s continue on with the standard otherworld shtick.” said the woman as she handed a tablet over to Watanabe. “There’s a bunch of stuff the TIA gives out for free, pick one and I’ll send you over.”

“I… This is just a standard tablet.” muttered Watanabe who was slightly disappointed in the contemporary invading his fantasy re-reincarnation. “By the way, do I get to keep this new skill when I go back?”

“No, these skills work only for the system of this new world. Our services don’t extend to the land of the Brassicans which has no system in place.” replied the woman. “Any levels you gain will stay in this new world too.”

“Right…” That’s lame… But know what is not lame? This skill! [Create Anything]: Use [Mana] to create any items. The items must actually be real items that exist or have existed on the world(s) the user has inhabited.

“I’ll go with this one.” said Watanabe as pointed at the aforementioned skill.

“Alright then.” said the woman. She got the tablet back from Watanabe before walking away from Watanabe. “Just a second… Good luck on your journey, and please be finish this job asap!”

“Don’t worry, I’m a professional, this isn’t my first time!” said Watanabe. He felt gravity disappear as it had during his first venture into another world. For a few minutes he floated in a white void, before he blacked out completely…

<TL Note: Hello guys, this chapter took a bit longer to translate, so sorry about that. For some reason the narration is completely different compared to other light novels. It has been quite hard to translate this chapter, but thanks to my editors’ help, we’ve somehow managed to bring a new chapter of this odd LN. Hope you enjoy.>

…Let’s hope our hero manages to escape this world before these translators notice that the story has completely changed compared to the original.

<TL Note: There seems to be a fourth-wall breaking joke in this part. It seems the original author has had their fair share of translation-related troubles.>

Hey, stop it with the needless translation notes. We’re getting to the good part where our protagonist finally reaches the peak of literature through becoming overpowered and I don’t need your damned notes ruining my narration!

Where were we? I got quite distracted thanks to those translators.

Ahem.

The first thing Watanabe did after arriving, before even checking his surroundings, was to say “[Create Anything: Chronometer]!” Suddenly, much to the glee of Watanabe, a chronometer appeared in his hands. He then started the chronometer, officially beginning his Generic Portal Fantasy Any% speedrun.

First Rule of Being Sent to Another World: Observe your surroundings calmly.

Our hero had found himself in the middle of a city that, unlike Brasscirom, needed no detailed description. To again commit plagiarism, everything in the city was “all designed in the same medieval style of architecture”. Walls and roads were made out of nondescript white stone, the roofs out of generic red shingles. The people wore clothes that were designed by someone who had no idea how medieval people dressed.

In short, it was a generic high medieval fantasy world that was perfect for Watanabe.

Second Rule of Being Sent to Another World: If you have confirmed yourself to be safe, begin checking for any systems that are exploitable.

[Status]!” voiced Watanabe in English, and a blue box popped up that detailed his stats.

Good, I think I know how to break this one. I just need to level up really quickly, he thought. Now for the Third Rule of Being Sent to Another World: Seek the aid of the settlement closest to you and ask where the “Adventurer’s Guild”, or the local equivalent of the “Adventurer’s Guild” is.

He didn’t really need to do so. He was already in front of what he assumed was the Adventurer’s Guild. It must be the building where there are armed people going in and out of it, right?

Watanabe was correct, and he entered the Adventurer’s Guild building. Fourth Rule of Being Sent to Another World: Gather as much information about the setting from the guild as possible. But who to ask? I’m still a stranger.

Watanabe looked around for any trustable people in the guild. In times like these the protagonist should find the female lead character that’ll help them on their journey. Let’s see… The female lead character is usually in their late teens, they don’t have black or brown hair, and they are the ones wearing the most noticeable outfit. They also are usually in their lonesome, waiting for a convenient protagonist to encounter them… There!

Watanabe spotted a girl in the corner that fit the description. She was a bit younger than Watanabe, had blonde hair, and wore a very odd orange tunic and frilly blue skirt combination.

He quickly approached her and began interrogating her to confirm her if she was the real deal.

“Hello, may you please honor me with your name my lady?”

The girl was quite shocked at the odd man approaching her. “Eh? I- I am Tangerina Reticulata Sapindales. You are?”

Good, she has an odd name, but an odd name isn’t enough. “I am Watanabe, Haruto Watanabe. By the way, are your parents still alive?”

“What an odd question to ask… No, they were killed by the demon army lead by the cruel Demon King.” replied Tangerina as she looked quite down reciting her tragic backstory.

Dead parents! “That’s perfe- Ahem. I offer my condolences.” She doesn’t have any armor, nor can I see any melee weapons on her. But she lacks that cliché witch hat so she is definitely not a magician. That only leaves…

“Are you a healer, or any other support class?”

“Yes mister, I decided to be a healer when I saw the suffering of the people in my village when…” Tangerina continued her tragic backstory for a while.

“So, anyways, want to defeat that Demon King with me? As in make a party?” asked Watanabe after having sat through Tangerina’s tragic monologue that was omitted by yours truly to save time.

“What? Mister, I am only level 3, and I have only met you a few minutes ago-”

Watanabe created a bar of gold with his [Skill] and handed it over to Tangerina.

“You’ll get more if you party up with me.” said Watanabe who had resorted to the crudest yet most effective form of persuasion: bribery.

“This is- I… Well, it’s not like things can go worse than they already are… Fine, I’ll come with you.” replied Tangerina. She received the bar of gold with much glee.

First party member acquired in 11 minutes 27 seconds, said Watanabe as he checked the chronometer.

“Then follow me outside, the Demon King is probably going to be dead in less than a day if my plan works right.” Watanabe then headed out of the Adventurer’s Guild, Tangerina following him. Watanabe walked and walked, until he exited the walls of the town.

Outside he saw generically lush plains that were befitting of a high fantasy world. He also saw a few slime-like monsters jumping around. Seeing the monsters, our hero decided to draw first blood.

“So, here’s my plan Tangerina.” he said as he chanted “[Create Anything: Assault Rifle]!” Suddenly, there was a ball of light in his hands that slowly turned into the most ubiquitous of assault rifles, the Avtomát Kalášnikova (or the AK-47 as it is more commonly known).

Tangerina was too shocked to even ask what the weird object in Watanabe’s hand was. Watanabe was a bit confused as well; he had never held a firearm in his life. He examined the AK-47, before deciding to wing it and press the trigger. With a fierce roar the beast came to life as it discharged a few rounds.

“W-W-What in the gods’ name is that?!” shouted Tangerina as she observed Watanabe, a level 1 nobody, shoot powerful magic spells out of the weird object.

“My ticket home.” replied Watanabe. “There is someone that I really need to apologize to, and I can’t do meet with them until I defeat that Demon King fellow.”

Tangerina could only watch in shock while Watanabe shot a few more rounds to familiarize himself with his new weapon. Unfortunately for him but fortunately for the generic slime monsters, his plans of familiarization were cut short when he ran out of ammunition in the magazine. He created a new magazine, but he had no idea how to get rid of the empty magazine that was stuck to the rifle so that he could reload.

“[Create Anything: Assault Rifle Instruction Booklet]!” he shouted, getting a booklet in return.

Everything is in Russian or something, I can’t understand this! “[Create Anything: Assault Rifle Instruction Booklet in Japanese]!”

Watanabe heard the cliché system’s voice as he attempted to cast this spell.

System: That object doesn’t exist.

It seemed that no one had made Japanese instructions on how to use an AK-47.

Fine, let me get something new then. Okay, how do I phrase this in English… Umm… Right! “[Create Anything: Assault Rifle That Also Has Instruction Booklet Written in Japanese!]!”

Watanabe exhausted the last of his mana while a Howa Type 89 assault rifle materialized along with a booklet on how to use it. Tangerina was even more shocked when Watanabe threw the AK-47 to the ground and began reading the booklet for his new toy.

“Mister, isn’t that like an ancient magical artifact you’re throwing on the ground?” she asked observing the poor AK-47 which laid on the dirt.

“Nah, don’t worry about it.” replied Watanabe. He quickly skimmed the manual. “Okay, okay… Mhm, okay, there is the Atare-3 for selecting firing mode…”

Watanabe got up after having received his impromptu education in firearms. “Well then, Tangerina, are you ready for some power-leveling?”

“I- I am not quite sure I am ready for anything, mister.” replied Tangerina.

“Good, let’s go!” replied Watanabe as he took aim at one of the slime-like monsters in the area.
