Chapter 4:

That was a choice

Raimei and Thunder

The rest of the Ito gang reaches their leader before the art gallery is any closer than eyeshot distance for him, and the first to make the group known is Baku, waving his hand and calling out his friend.
-“Oi, boss!”
-“Huh, I thought you guys weren’t gonna come”
Ito turns around and looks at the three, checking their mood.
-“The Ito gang needs an Ito to be a gang” Chou says, jokingly.
-“ We ain’t got nothin’ better to do, you know how it is” Atsu likewise jokes, and Ito smiles, feeling emboldened by having his buddies with him
-“Yossha! Let’s check this shit out!”

As Ito promised earlier, the lock of the window proved no match for Atsu, and if the alarm functioned at that time, they would have just run away. It became clear that there is no power in the entire building, and Ito’s thoughtless confidence swept his three friends inside.

By this point the group isn't a stranger to entering abandoned buildings. It was one of Atsu’s pasttimes and something his friends were always eager to accompany him in, but this is the first time they entered a building technically still in use. Despite Atsu being the most experienced one, Ito and Baku are leading the charge, actually having fun with just entering and checking the few art pieces that remained there either affixed to the building or too big to transport. Baku has practically forgotten this happened because Ito wanted to go against Shizune’s wishes for its own sake, yet his leader has that still in mind, and was grinning all the way through their trespassing.

The only one mildly intimidated by this experience is Chou, who is in high alert for anything even remotely resembling a spider, whereas Atsu is keeping an eye out for everything else and enjoying the feeling of his heart racing. The one that is thinking of something else is Baku, beginning to feel inspired after walking through the third aisle, and pulls out his phone to write down some words and turns of phrase that could be kick-ass lyrics. He does not even notice that his phone has no signal whatsoever, unlike Chou, who is simply choosing not to comment on it like to not look like a coward, because it genuinely freaks him out.
Ito goofs around trying to include all his friends in making fun in front of the art pieces and making dumb poses in front of statues before moving onto a different exhibition hall.

-“Huh… the window we entered was this way, wasn’t it?” Baku observes, looking at door in the room, finding it a bit too familiar.
-“Yeah… we came from there, then we turned around” Ito says, tapping a statue on the legs with his bokken, checking what it’s made of.
-“I’ll check” Atsu does so immediately, sprinting toward the door, opening it, and appearing on the opposite side, from a different entry point to this room they’re in. It understandably leaves the group stupefied, and Chou starts breathing raggedly.

-“Dude, how’d you do that?” Baku asks, looking at the two entry points, and then using his phone light to look at a shocked Atsu, who looks back where he came from, heavily disoriented. He knows where he moved, and this is now the first time he doesn't feel at home inside an empty building.

-“Okay, I’m goin to go back, and I’mma call you guys to tell you what I see, that was weird” Atsu says, quickly steadying himself mentally and showing his phone.
-“I don’t have signal tho” Ito says, looking at his phone.
-“You too?” Baku says, which gets a whimper out of Chou.
-“Me neither” the more nervous one mentions, while Atsu just look at his phone and confirms he is also without signal with a nod.

Ito looks at everyone and even he can read the air.
-“You guys follow me, we’re getting out of here”
As the leader takes charge, the trio feels slightly less nervous. Time and time again Ito had covered for them when they were intimidated, and this was no exception. As they tried to return to their entry window, they kept entering different halls and rooms they were already in. The repeated art pieces on every room only served to accentuate how repetitive and nonsensical their path became.

No matter where the group goes, they keep looping around the same rooms and halls, now with bizarre patterns starting to appear. With every new look to things they had already seen it reveales the texture of the objects and walls started shifting ever so slightly, as if the whole place began to melt.

The four young men start to realize that they are trapped- they don't know the specifics of being within a wraith’s domain, but their souls understood the claustrophobic feeling of it before their brains picked up on all the details that their five senses granted them; the darkness that didn’t react to light sources, how their words don't reach beyond two meters, the smell of humidity and decay, the salty taste of their own nervous sweat and finally feeling the occasional touch of invisible strings.
The first one to identify that sensation is Atsu, by feeling his left wrist stuck on something for a second.
-”Somethin’ fuckin’ touched me” He warns the others, immediately taking a step back and scrubbing his arm with his opposite hand.
-”You felt something too?” Ito says, moving in front of Atsu and pointing his bokken away, as if to threaten whatever touched them.
-“Sticky shit, like some sorta string…” Atsu confirms.
-“Like a… spiderweb?” Chou says out loud what everyone is thinking.
The four go silent for a long moment.

-“There’s really a monster here” Baku’s voice almost breaks before it actually breaks into short scream. He also started feeling the strings, and the four immediately group together, backs to backs. They all feel that presence approaching and that any movement could get them caught by whatever it is they can’t see.
-”She said… Mitsuki said the monster is going to kill us”
Baku has lost his composure, while Chou is immobile like a statue, and Atsu looks at Ito with bare nerves.
-“We shouldn’ have come, man. What are we goin’ to do here now?”

Ito locks eyes with his friend. He knows Atsu well, and he knows exactly that Atsu is not even thinking of blaming him, or anyone else. He knows Atsu is thinking that his younger siblings and his dad need him.
Even Ito started feeling intimidated, but that dread wasn’t enough to give in to fear. Had he been alone, he would be terrified to the point of uselessness, but since the other three are here, Ito is simply unable to panic.
The brutish young man takes a step toward the wall and grabs a helmet from a replica armor that laid there in the art gallery, ignoring the feeling of the string, and throws it into the darkness with all his might.
-“Get the FUCK away!”

The sound of impact echoes from the next room over, and the creeping sensation of encroaching strings fades. The gang breathes in relief, but the moment does not last. A heavier, stronger thread of string launches out of the darkness and sticks to Ito's chest, then another, pulling taut and dragging the delinquent towards the dark room. Ito reacts quickly, jamming his bokken across the doorway as a brake, turning to yell over his shoulder.
-“Yosh! I pissed it off, you guys go the other way!”

-“Dude, what the fuck?” Baku’s fear is now targeted to Ito's wellbeing.
-“Are you stupid or something? It’s focusing on me! Get the fuck away!” Ito says, struggling, trying to tear the string with his other hand.
-“Hell no we aren’t!” Atsu moves on and grabs Ito’s arm, helping him resist the pull. Immediately, Chou and Baku assist.

“I told you to get the fuck away!” Ito yells at his comrades, who absolutely won’t allow him go down alone.
-“We’re not leaving you here with a monster!” Chou says, resolute.
-“I’ll beat the shit out of it myself, you think I’m not strong enough??” Ito himself doesn’t know the answer, but what’s important is that the other three believe it.
-“The Ito gang is stronger together, dumbass!” Atsu declares, and that invigorates Ito to push in further back. His strength and his friend’s combined is enough to disengage completely, although his school uniform is torn and taken into the darkness by what was now clearly visible as web strings.

Ito hastily stands up and takes the group to another part of the room, away from the door. He stands his ground and takes a defensive stance with his bokken.
-“Tch, you three are real idiots. Don’t get in my way now, because Number One is gonna show you how you kill a monster proper”
Ito’s adrenaline-fueled lines ignite the fighting spirit of the other three, who quickly get on their feet and overcome the fear. Looking at the door where that webbed string came from, they expect another and they’re ready to react.

An uncomfortable moment passes. Just when they start to consider moving from there, several hands erupt from the floor below them, destroying the floor and taking a hold of the four in an instant, pulling them down below.

Shizune only sees one thing when she enters her claustrophobic apartment, partly because of the light it emits, partly because there’s barely anything else to see. What she notices is the small sensor she had prepared in case someone trespassed the domain of the wraith that she was tracking. Immediately, her mind goes to the obvious conclusion and she loudly groans:
-“Oh for crying out loud…”
