Chapter 18:

mr_clyde_and_the_hell_let_loose

The Verne Project

NO! No no no. I don’t want that to happen again. I’m so scared and disgusted with myself that I will not let it happen again. This pride of mine will be fuel for better things. Yes, yes. Focus, Julian. Focus, Kingslayer. Rip and tear through the enemies with controllable pride.

The ringing is fading into the distance. Maybe another day, but not now. Standing up to face Green, I first examine the room calmly. They are all just flabbergasted.

Taking a step forward, the whispering starts. The camera's focus is on me and my opponent. Once I call upon the blades of my sword, panic overtakes everyone, making them run and scream in horror. The older ones are left alone and some even lying on the ground. Workers use this to their favour and start to steal the belongings of the guests. And Mr. Clyde is furious in the distance. Looking at him, my pride is restored to its fullest.

Shrugging to him, I declare “Everyone! Start running or I shall slash until your bones crumble to ash!”

“And you… I’m fully unleashed now. Come at me, you piece of shit.” My face is now for everyone to see. That means that the GSE Glove is no longer a mine waiting for me to step on it.

Activating the gravity bending device, and with Lorentz plasma blades evaporating the air, I have nothing to be afraid of. In fact, this is exhilarating.

Shooting holographic claws again, the blades cut through them effortlessly. Advancing slowly but surely, Green starts to move in between his talons. Some of the attendants are slashed by his incessant barrage of attacks. Others are grabbed by him only to be thrown at me as a distraction. Our battle arena is now the whole main hall while everyone is trying to save themselves.

Agent White starts to approach us with a furious stare. Meanwhile Mr Clyde escapes to the upper floor. He is either trying to escape or going to the room with the pods. I can’t let that happen.

With this new resolution, I come close to Green to fight him in close quarters. His trickery is only buying time, as evading his long range clawing is easier now that a pattern of movement has been ingrained in my muscle memory. Nervousness from his sweat dripping onto the floor stops and a laugh resonates in the whole hall.

His relentless waves of attacks come to an end and then starts approaching me. Before he reaches me, I call upon the blade to unite itself in the handle. When the pieces reach and complete the katana, already at sword range, my slashing starts to try and pierce through him. Evading some of the attacks and receiving others, blood starts to fall on the floor where he is positioned.

In one of my slashes, he grabs Lorentz with his claws. Shit. Anticipating that I would de-attach the katana again, he proceeds to drag me to him with extreme force and punches my guts with his free hand. A booming sound reverberates in my ears. My disorientation from the hit gets brushed aside as adrenaline gets to my increased pumping heart.

A few more punches with the same strength come next until I part the blade in two parts. How is he even holding plasma!? I thought he would stop at some point, but if I didn't portion Lorentz in two sections, he could have sustained through the heat.

Being free from his grip, sweeping the floor with a kick comes to my mind. Doing so, he jumps instantly. Using this moment of instability, the GSE Glove shines in this scenario. Charging a force field, I send Green flying to the other side of the hall. Getting up from the floor, Juliette comes and talks to me.

“There is something fishy going on in here. I can’t check it out, so could you do it?”

“I already know that. That's why I’m here. Now, get away from me. You don’t want him to see you talking to me.”

“It doesn’t matter. I’m Agent White with them knowingly knowing I’m from the DAI. There is something that they want from me.”

“At least trick them into believing you are with them. It will gain some time for us. I’ll go for Clyde.”

Nodding to me, she then goes with Green. I hear some yelling from the two of them, but my sights are on the stairs that are now demolished. In a moment of desperation, the force field thrower comes in handy. With some turbulence, I'm now on the second floor.

The shining light penetrating the room shows how much destruction is going on, as the dust is easily seen for the bright sun shafts. Running in search of Clyde, a strange sound from the outside grabs my attention. Looking through the window, the unbelievable comes to reality.

A swarm of drones are coming here. Helicopters and other flying vehicles with military grade weaponry are circling the precinct. And that is only looking at the sky. Below, in the streets, mobilisations and fires are everywhere. From the main street, soldiers of various organisations are coming to the mansion.

I opened hell’s gates. After taking a last look at the chaos of my creation, running to Mr Clyde resumes. Only after restarting my run, a screech from behind me rings in my ears.

“KINGSLAYER! WE ARE NOT DONE.”

Checking the windows to see if I can jump outside, soldiers and mercenaries are swarming the place. Explosions and shots start to be fired at me as they notice my presence. Dropping to the floor to not get shot, the bullets start landing on the walls, generating a mini explosion on contact. Special rounds. This is getting out of hand.

To my delight, a smoke bomb from one of the rooms obscures the vision and use it to my advantage to escape down the hallway. Turning at a corner, Hayami stands victorious against mercenaries that tried to take her down. Seeing me, she comes close and tells me what is happening.

“Everyone is coming to either enslave or exterminate you. A new race for your head or favour is now afoot.”

“How delightful. What about the files and the twins?” The symptom of exhaustion, sighing, is taking my mouth hostage. Nonetheless, my question was still audible.

“They already left before the stir up. A group of shinobi came here and are now escorting them to Hisa. From what they told me, they deciphered something important for you to ‘experience’.”

Saying that, I check my inbox in my sunglasses. She is right. A file named ‘verne_experiment_n2049’ with an extension unknown to me was sent to me about 4 minutes ago, when I was fighting with Green. Trying to open it, a pop up message appears.

Warning, the next file requires a special helmet to be displayed.

“Here, take this.” Hayami hands me the head gear necessary to open the archive.

“It is from the room we were in before. One of the pods was broken from the blast of the door. The twins told me to grab it and give it to you.”

Searching for a safe room, the ladders to the attic are nearby. Climbing to get in it, I cut through it with Lorentz. Dark and abandoned, if rats are in here I would not be surprised.

“I need you to do some time for me to check this out. Clyde was my priority but the bastard must have escaped. If you see him, try to capture him too.”

“Count on me, Julian.”

With nothing more to say, she closes the hatch and goes to defend the attic.
