Chapter 1:

The lies behind truth

Keno

Keno stood at the window, staring out at the desolate cityscape that stretched out before him. His heart was heavy with grief as he thought of his mother, taken from him far too soon.

He remembered the day the soldiers had come to their home, bursting through the door with guns drawn. His mother had tried to fight back, but she was no match for the well-trained soldiers of the Index corporation. They had dragged her away, leaving Keno alone and helpless.

He knew why they had taken her. It was because of the debt she had incurred, the debt that all citizens of this dystopian society owed to Index. The corporation controlled everything, from the food they ate to the air they breathed. And if you couldn't pay for your basic human rights, you were punished.

Keno's mother had been unable to afford the fees for her pod, the artificial womb that had given birth to him. And so, she had been deemed a criminal and punished accordingly.

As he thought of his mother's suffering, Keno's anger and determination grew. He vowed to do whatever it took to bring down the tyrannical Index corporation.

In the distance loudspeakers blared to life, the voice of the Index representative echoing through the streets of New Valhalla.

"Citizens of New Valhalla," he began, "you are lucky to live in this great city, under the protection and guidance of the Index corporation. We are the ones who keep you safe, who provide for your every need. Without us, where would you be?

"Think of all the advancements we have brought to society. The pods that allow you to bring new life into the world. The advanced medical technologies that keep you healthy and strong. The clean air and water that sustain you. All of these things, and more, are made possible by Index.

"So let us be grateful for what we have, and let us work together to build an even brighter future. Remember, together we are strong. Together, we are unstoppable. Long live Index!"

As the speech came to an end, Keno couldn't help but feel a sense of disgust. How could they spout such propaganda, pretending that they were doing good for humanity? He knew the truth, knew the darkness that lay beneath the surface of their seemingly benevolent actions.

But he also knew that he couldn't let his anger show. He had to bide his time, wait for the right moment to strike. He would do whatever it took to bring down the corrupt Index corporation and avenge his mother
