Chapter 4:

Panic Attack

Next to Me

He found the woman curled up in a blanket and leaning on a wall, sleeping. The dark patches around her feet suggested she hadn't really dried herself off last night.

"...what are you doing, brat?" the woman mumbled, barely peering out of her hair as she dropped everything and stood up, the light once again enveloping her. The boy had propped himself close to the wall to observe a small indented spot on her right arm, but as soon as he realised it looked unnatural - almost like a miniscule water pipe had been compressed into her skin - she grabbed him by the neck, ready to strangle him...

"Don't try me," she hissed, just as a plantive knock came from the door.

A hesitant silence settled, then Celesta stumbled to get the door before the visitor could knock again.
----
"Nova? You should have left yesterday."

"But you were the one who stopped me...because I had to tell Satoshi something..."

Satoshi raised his eyebrow in a combination of irritation and bemusement, too absorbed in the overheard conversation to move (especially because Nova had chosen not to talk ever since that stormy evening...or was that not a choice...?). Only when his name was mentioned did he have a momentary panic attack and attempt to scuttle to the door, trying to arrive as casually as possible.

Celesta got behind the girl and gently pushed her forward. "Now's your chance!" she smirked.

"I-I hope...we can know each other for a long time moving forward..." the blue-eyed girl stammered.

Another shove.

"...and the thing is..."

Yet another shove, this time audibly harder than the last two. Nova went bright red, as if a light had been flipped on in her head.

"...I really, really like you!"

All she got back from him was a blank stare, as if to ask, "So what?".

"You're gonna reject me when I basically gave you a love confession...?" she muttered, but his lack of reaction told her she hadn't spoken loud enough.
