Chapter 11:

Meeting Kara

PANDEMONIUM

Hugo turned to see a woman standing in the doorway. She was anbuzzed and wore loose fitting clothes in all black, like an off-duty enforcement officer. She was carrying a rifle over her shoulder, and Hugo noticed a few extra weapons holstered on her belt.

He smiled nervously and nodded, "Yeah, it is."

The woman stepped into the room, studying the gun with interest. "Nice work," she said. "I'm Kara, one of the senior members here at the Sanctuary. I heard you down here, so I thought I'd come introduce myself."

"Nice to meet you" Hugo muttered.

"I'm somewhat of the weapons expert here, so I can tell you and I will get along great" She said this far more to the gun in Hugo's hand than Hugo himself.

Hugo did a search of her on his implant, and was unsurprised by what he found: nothing. He guessed she had used a fake name, and that the rebellion had scrubbed her data from the database. Still, he figured he had enough information abut her, after all, there were plenty of gun nuts that came into his shop looking to fix up an old peice.

Kara hefted her rifle and gave Hugo a friendly smile. "You can call me K if you want," she said. "I'm here to help the Sanctuary in any way I can, so if you need anything, just let me know."

Hugo thanked her, feeling a little more comfortable now that he knew who she was - or at least as much as he could. He asked her if she had any advice for him on how to stay safe while they were planning their missions against the Council, and Kara nodded solemnly.

"Always keep your head up and be aware of your surroundings," she said. "And never be afraid to shoot first if it comes down to it." She paused for a moment before adding: "But only use lethal force when absolutely necessary. We're here to protect people, not take lives."

Hugo nodded his head in agreement - it made sense to him. He thanked Kara again for the advice and watched as she left the room, disappearing into the dark hallways of the sanctuary. Perhaps he had judged her too soon.

He worked for a few more hours, organizing his blueprints for when he got back to his shop - which he decided he still wanted to reopen as soon as it was easiest. He noticed how scarce the Sanctuary actually was, their med bay was barren and the mess hall was deserted - it was depressing really. He was about to head back to his room when something caught his eye. He walked down the hallway and saw a small room with a soft glow - it seemed out of place in the otherwise utilitarian halls of the Sanctuary.

He peered inside, and as he did, a voice behind him chimed:

"Looking for something?"
