Chapter 17:

Alumnus

Chaos Hiro

The crew is gathered on the ship’s bridge, with Sloth asleep on one of the lounges.

Acies: “Before we reach Metallicus, we need to acquire the necessary equipment to enable us to succeed in that theater of operations. Metallicus is two times standard gravity, so we need gravity modulator suits to prevent us from being sitting ducks. Also, given the extreme war situation on Metallicus, we have to equip ourselves with personal shields and some specialized weapons to defend ourselves.”

Potesta: “Metallicus is far off normal trade routes, so the challenge is finding the ideal stop over along the way. Fortunately, I’ve identified a particular weapons merchant who is located on a small moon orbiting a gas giant planet, which is enroute to Metallicus.”

Hiro: “Particular in what way?”

Potesta: “Like us, this weapons merchant is a Path of the Shield school alumnus, his name is Dominus. Turns out he doesn’t have any Alliance affiliation, and that type of student typically doesn’t perform well at our school. However, he somehow managed to be a top student across multiple disciplines.”

Parvul: “Oh, so he’s a geek.”

Potesta: “So I guess, by your definition then I’m a geek too?”

Parvul looks away and starts whistling to herself.

Potesta: “In any case, I’ve contacted his staff, and they have provided the coordinates to Dominus’ palace. They are expecting our arrival shortly.”

Artifice, smiling: “Palace, I like the sound of that.”

The crew exits their spaceship upon landing in front of what looks like a run-down 2-story office building in the middle of what appears to be a giant junk yard.

Artifice, to Potesta: “I’d question whether you got the coordinates wrong, but I know better.”

Parvul: “Talk about a back-water poop hole.”

Terridus blushes. Out of the front door of the building, emerge three lovely ladies dressed up as a dog, cat, and rabbit.

Acies, whispering to Hiro: “Hiro, you seeing this too, right?”

Hiro, nodding his head: “Uh, huh. Uh, huh.”

All three cosplayers: “Welcome to King Dominus’ royal palace. We are his royal majesty’s loyal servants.”

Puppy: “Hi, I’m Puppy. Woof woof.”

Kitty: “Hi, I’m Kitty. Meow meow.”

Bunny: “Hi, I’m Bunny. Hop hop.”

Parvul, sarcastically: “Very original.”

Bunny: “Why thank you so much for the complement. We do take pride in our role play. Hop hop.”

Parvul: “You know bunnies don’t actually say hop hop, right?”

Bunny: “Oh, lighten up, and have some fun. Who needs a hug? I bet you do you sweet little cutie. Hop hop.”

Bunny hops over to Parvul, smothering Parvul’s face into her ample cleavage. Parvul responds by flailing her arms about trying not to suffocate. Both Acies and Hiro get nose bleeds.

Puppy and Kitty walk up to either side of Bunny, dragging her away, while Parvul gasps for breath.

Puppy: “So sorry about that, she’s over affectionate and gets carried away sometimes. Woof woof.”

Artifice: “Did I hear correctly? You did say this is the royal palace, correct?”

Kitty, oblivious to the implication: “Yes, of course. Why do you ask? Meow meow.”

Artifice, raising her eyebrows and pulling up the corners of her mouth: “Oh it’s nothing, my hearing just acts up sometimes is all.”

Terridus: “How did you come to meet King Dominus?”

Puppy: “All of us were in Master Dominus’ graduating class at the Path of the Shield Academy. Woof woof.”

Acies, excitedly: “She just called him Master. You hear that Hiro?”

Hiro, nodding his head: “Uh huh. Uh huh.”

Bunny: “It was such an honor being in the same class as Master Dominus. He’s so wonderful. Hop hop.”

Kitty: “Yes, I couldn’t agree more. He exceled at everything. Meow meow.”

Puppy: “We’re so fortunate he allowed us to accompany him after we all graduated. Woof woof.”

Parvul, unenthusiastically: “He sounds truly marvellous, we can’t wait to meet him.”

Bunny: “I’m so happy you see the truth of it. Yes, of course. Just follow us, and we’ll lead you into his throne room.”

Upon entering the building, they bear witness to the ‘glory’ of King Dominus seated upon his throne.

King Dominus is a golden haired, golden eyed, lean, but sinewy man in his 20s. He is attractive, flamboyantly dressed wearing a floral embroidered purple velvet suit. A lock of curled hair sits on his forehead just below his gaudy, heavily faux jewel encrusted crown. His throne is a large, high backed chair set with gold leaf, and cushioned in frayed red velvet.

Artifice, looking around, whispers: “Looks like a used items shop.”

Dominus, clearing his throat: “Eh hem. Welcome, I am Dominus, King of Quisquiliae. As my loyal servants must have already informed you, I am the best at everything.”

Puppy, Kitty, Bunny, adoringly: “It’s true, he really is.”

Dominus, pretentiously: “As such, I make a point of being a role model to all. Feel free to ask me for any advice you need.”

Kitty: “Master, please stay on focus. Meow meow.”

Dominus: “Yes, of course. Let’s get to the point then—why are you here?”

Potesta: “We already conveyed that information to …”

Dominus, cutting her off: “No, no, that won’t do, I want to hear it from you directly.”

Suddenly his demeaner changes from jovial to deadly serious. Hiro looks over to Potesta, who nods.

Hiro: “We’re on our way to Metallicus to find someone named Proelium. We need some supplies to prepare for that, so we decided to stop here along the way.”

Dominus: “I won’t inquire about your motivation to encounter Proelium. Still, are you sure you want to do that? It’s well known that he’s quite aggressive, way overpowered, and nigh undefeatable.”

The friends stare resolutely back at him.

Acies: “No one’s guaranteed victory every day.”

Dominus: “True. However, did Sun Tzu not say, ‘The greatest victory is that which requires no battle’”?

Artifice: “But did he not also say, ‘You have to believe in yourself’?”

Dominus, clapping to himself in excitement: “Yes, of course, splendid! I see you are determined and won’t be so easily dissuaded. But where are my manners? You are my honored guests, so let’s forestall any serious discussions until I’ve properly welcomed you with some fine entertainment. Kitty, Puppy, Bunny … please proceed.”

Bunny, enthusiastically: “He just loves this! Hop hop.”

Puppy, Kitty, and Bunny get on all fours, chasing each other’s tails as they circle around Dominus’ throne. They woof woof, meow meow, and hop hop while taking turns jumping into his lap, then leaping back off once he has patted them. Once each of them has been patted, they prostrate themselves at his feet.

Artifice: “Question for you. As king here, how many subjects do you have?

Dominus, rubbing his chin: “Just these three, but I have ambitious plans for growth. Speaking of which, I’m sure you ladies will want to join my team here.”

Dominus, pausing in thought: “Let’s see, what shall I name you?”

Parvul: “Grrrrrrrrrrr, don’t you even think about it old man.”

Dominus: “Ouch, that hurts. I’m only in my 20s you know. Of course, I see! Fair enough. First, I must defeat the men in your troupe to win you over. Now about this then, let’s have a competition. When I defeat Hiro, Acies, and Sloth then you women will become mine.”

All four women, low rumble similar to an earthquake: “Absolutely not!”

Potesta, icily: “We don’t belong to them so we’re not theirs to lose.”

Terridus: “Besides, we fight together as a team.”

Dominus: “Admirable that you have such a fine spirit of comradery, but don’t you realize I will treat you like queens. You’re all so lovely, especially you, the shy, quiet one.”

Dominus looks directly at Terridus who lets out a squeak, covering her face with her hands.

Dominus, tapping his foot impatiently: “I just don’t understand your reluctance to join me.”

Except for Potesta, the girls steal a glance over at Hiro.

Dominus: “Ah, it all becomes clear now—your hearts are already spoken for.”

Parvul and Terridus go beat red and start fidgeting. Artifice folds her arms in front of her glaring, while Potesta remains her stoic self.

Dominus: “Sorry, but I must insist. If you really want your supplies, then you’ll have to defeat me.”

Potesta: “The answer is still no.”

Artifice: “We won’t be slaves to anyone.”

Parvul: “Sorry, you old pervert, but not happening.”

Terridus: “What they said.”

Dominus: “Very well. How about if I take all of you on at once?

Hiro: “No. I won’t put my friends at risk.”

Dominus tilts his head down in thought and starts twiddling his fingers.

Dominus, suddenly smiling: “You certainly drive a hard bargain. Fortunately for you, I’m feeling generous. How about this then—if you defeat me, I will provide all the supplies you need. However, if I win you get nothing and must leave here empty handed.”

Terridus: “Will anyone’s life be in jeopardy?”

Dominus: “Oh, of course not. What do you take me for, some kind of barbarian? You have my word—I will stop short of killing you. At worst, you’ll suffer some missing teeth, fractured limbs, concussions, internal bleeding, perhaps a ruptured spleen or two …”

Bunny: “Master, you’re supposed to be convincing them, not scaring them off. Hop hop”

Dominus, to Bunny: “Ahhh yes, thank you so much for reminding me, my sweet Bunny.”

Dominus to Hiro & friends: “So, what do you say? Are you still too afraid? Hmmmm?”

Sloth, suddenly awake: “In the future outcomes I can see, all of us survive the experience.”

Parvul: “He doesn’t look that tough.”

Acies: “Praise the Lord, I’m always up for a good fight.”

Potesta: “If we leave here empty handed, it will set us back weeks.”

Artifice: “I’m actually kind of curious if he can back up all his bravado.”

Terridus: “I’ll do my best to help everyone.”

All eyes turn to Hiro who says: “I have to admit, I get a certain thrill when our backs are up against the wall and we all work together to win.”

Dominus, clapping his hands: “Wonderful. It’s decided then.”

Artifice: “You know, you agreed not to kill any of us, so why didn’t you demand the same condition from us?”

Dominus, Puppy, Kitty, and Bunny guffaw, clutching their stomachs in pain from laughing so hard, almost unable to catch their breath.

Puppy: “Hey Master, better make sure your life insurance is up to date. Woof woof.”

Kitty: “Be careful Master, they might give you a booboo. Meow meow.”

Bunny: “Maybe after he knocks all of you unconscious, you can dream that you won. Hop hop.”

Acies: “I don’t know about you, but my confidence just took a hit.”

Parvul: “They’re just messing with us, trying to psych us out, right Artifice”

Artifice, pensive: “I don’t know.”

Dominus raises his hand, and the laughter instantly ceases.

Dominus: “Aside from the question of your ability to kill me, it’s clear that none of you are capable of such an act. If you think otherwise, then you really don’t know yourselves very well.”

Hiro: “Of course we’re not killers. Why create immeasurable sorrow by taking a life? Enough talking, let’s do this. Uh, exactly how are we competing?”

Dominus: “Allow me to explain.”

Dominus opens his palm to reveal a silvery metallic orb. When he releases the orb it remains in place, suspended in mid-air.

Acies: “Yeah, that’s not very helpful.”

Parvul, narrowing her eyes: “It’s a very rare item that integrates the most advanced aspects of both technology and quantum alliances. It creates an artificial bubble within itself to manipulate space and gravity. I never expected to see one myself—Master Ali would love to analyze it.”

Dominus, to Parvul: “Precisely.”

Dominus, to the orb: “Accommodate—human scale.”

The orb expands till it appears large enough for a single person to enter. Its metallic surface then pulls back to reveal a wavy, black portal. Dominus extends his right hand, palm upward indicating they should enter, but they stare back at him dubiously.

Dominus: “It’s perfectly safe you know. Very well then, I shall enter first.”

Dominus walks through the portal, disappears, then materializes floating in the center of a brightly lit 100-foot diameter, grey metallic walled sphere.

Terridus, looking on warily: “Can we all fit in there?”

Parvul walks confidently up and into the orb, appearing along the outer perimeter facing Dominus.

Potesta, Sloth, Artifice, and Acies walk through the portal in turn as Terridus looks on dubiously.

Hiro: “Are you ok with this Terridus?”

Terridus: “I’m feeling a bit anxious. I’m not very comfortable with technology, and that space looks very small.”

Hiro: “I understand. What if we walk in together, will that help?”

Terridus blushes, looking down, but nods affirmatively. Hiro extends his hand, and Terridus glows even brighter red as she extends her hand out to Hiro’s.

Hiro, as they reach the orb’s portal: “The doorway is too narrow to fit side-by-side, so let’s face each other.”

They turn toward each other as Hiro takes Terridus’ other hand, making them appear to be in some form of dance pose. Terridus is so nervous that she starts emitting a high-pitched humming sound.

Hiro: “I promise it will be ok, let’s go.”

Terridus nods assent, then they waltz through the portal together. Upon materializing, they find themselves within the outer perimeter of the orb—each friend is equidistant from one another, facing inward to Dominus at the orb’s center.

Terridus: “What a relief, it’s bigger on the inside than the outside.”

Parvul: “Why is Terridus’ face beet red? Hiro, what did you do now, you pervert?”

Terridus throws her hands up to cover her face.

Hiro: “No, no, it’s not like that. Terridus was just nervous is all.”

Dominus: “Well done Hiro, I see my influence is rubbing off on you already.”

Artifice, seeming annoyed: “We’re all here, can we get started now?”

Dominus: “Ahh, everyone is always in a hurry. First, let me explain how I set up the internal physical and gravitational properties of this environment.”

Potesta: “How did you decide on the initial conditions? What prevents you from gaining a playing field advantage?”

Dominus: “Had I wanted to gain the upper hand, I would have gone with extremes of light or heavy gravity. So, to be as fair as possible I set the gravity at one earth standard. Ultimately, I’m hoping you’ll provide me with a good workout, so I want you to have every opportunity to win. You’ve already observed that although there isn’t any ground under your feet, this space supports your weight. You can essentially treat all points within this bubble as terra firma. Whatever space is below your feet will act as the ground. You will be able to jump as far as you normally would under standard gravity. But here is a critical point—the angle of your feet as they come back down will determine what your new up and down orientation is. You’ll essentially be able to set your own direction of gravity based on your body’s rotation after you’ve pushed off of the surface. The only exception to this is the outer wall, which will always act as down.”

Acies: “What happens if someone pushes or collides into you?”

Dominus: “Same rules apply. Whatever momentum you have will carry you a set distance. At the end of that trajectory, wherever the soles of your feet are will dictate downward gravity.”

Hiro: “How do we win?”

Dominus: “Center sphere, 12-foot diameter.”

The friends look on as a transparent shimmering sphere encapsulates Dominus.

Dominus: “All you have to do is get any part of my body out of this safe space to win. If I manage to stay within this perimeter then I win. Easy right?”

Hiro: “How much time do we have?”

Dominus, smiling: “You want a time limit, do you? I hardly think that will be necessary, but why not. How is 15 minutes, does that seem fair?

Hiro looks around to see his friends nod in assent.

Hiro: “Agreed.”

Dominus: “Timekeeper.”

A holographic timer appears displaying 15 minutes and 0 seconds in red digits.

Dominus: “3 …”

Artifice: “Hey, wait up!”

Dominus: “2 …”

Barely audible is Terridus chanting.

Dominus: “1 … go!”

Just as Dominus utters the word ‘go’, a massive fireball the size of his safe space streams at him from the outer wall, scoring a direct hit on his position. The heat and flames completely engulf him.

Acies, admiringly: “That was an amazing attack, no hesitation at all.”

Parvul: “Woah, looks like he’s toast.”

Hiro, in disbelief: “That’s impressive. Was that your fireball Terridus?”

Terridus: “Y y yes it was, but I’m afraid I over did it.”

As all eyes remain fixed on the center of the sphere, the fireball fading to reveal a smiling and apparently unscathed Dominus. The last remnants of his charred velvet suit crumble off his body, exposing a grey body suit, textured throughout by rising and falling energy wave patterns.

Dominus, clapping to himself: “Wonderful, wonderful, simply wonderful. I knew there was a reason I took a liking to you Terridus.”

Terridus: “I’m just relieved you’re alright.”

Acies: “But how? That was a direct hit.”

Hiro: “Those are weird looking long johns.”

Potesta: “Especially weird since they were undamaged by the intense heat.”

Dominus: “Oh well, I guess the cat’s out of the bag. I will explain, but first a demonstration is in order. Come attack me one by one, and I promise to let you land the first blow. Furthermore, I will only do the minimum required to defend myself after your initial attack. Terridus has already taken her turn.”

Parvul: “Huh? Are you nuts or something?”

Unexpectedly, although still apparently asleep, Sloth’s purple aura envelopes him. He takes a single step, which somehow carries him to a point just behind Dominus. Sloth reaches both arms out attempting to shove Dominus out of his safe space. Two scenarios play out in succession, at first alternating with the image of Dominus standing rigid, unmoved, contrasted with Dominus having one foot outside of his safe zone. However, over a short window of time the image of Dominus within his safe space becomes more and more prevalent, while the alternate scenario dwindles. When the sequence of images ceases, Dominus is still standing, none the worse for wear, while Sloth is doubled over, panting, exhausted. Dominus picks Sloth up in one hand, and casually tosses him underhanded so that he lands in an undignified heap back at his starting position.

Terridus: “Are you ok Sloth?”

Unable to speak, Sloth holds up his thumb to allay his friend’s concern.

Hiro: “Hey, he was already down. Why did you toss him like that?”

Dominus: “I treated him as delicately as I was able. Would you prefer that I left him here next to me while the rest of you attack?”

Hiro’s face sours at the response, but he holds his tongue. Spontaneously, Artifice takes the initiative sprinting from her initial position, then bounding off each landing point in a zig zag pattern making her way toward Dominus.

Dominus: “While I appreciate the demonstration of your agility, I assure you it’s completely unnecessary. I said I would allow you to strike the first blow and I meant it.”

Artifice: “Please excuse me for not trusting an opponent in the midst of a battle.”

Artifice ignites her blue aura, reaching out as she completes her sentence, passing into Dominus’ safe zone. As her hand comes into contact with the back of his left shoulder, Dominus’s body and facial expression go limp.

Artifice, triumphant: “Got you! You’re under my control now.”

Abruptly, the dull look on Dominus’ faces evaporates, replaced by one of fierce determination.

Artifice, shocked: “How did you … ungh”

Dominus lashes out behind him, hitting her in the solar plexus. She doubles over as the wind is knocked out of her. He then extends his left leg backward, sweeping her up with it, and then sling-shotting her back to her original position.

Hiro: “Artifice!”

Hiro tenses, leaning forward preparing to go to her. Perhaps anticipating Hiro’s response, Artifice waves him off, and he relaxes, settling back. Without notice, Acies begins a steady paced, direct walk over to Dominus.

Dominus: “Very good, the direct approach. I see you’ve decided to trust me.”

Acies: “Oh, I don’t trust you. There’s just nothing going to get in my way.”

Acies stops within Dominus’ safe zone, facing him as would a belligerent boxer at the start of a bout.

Acies, encasing himself in his red aura: “Strength.”

Dominus: “You probably should add hardening—we don’t want you to injure yourself now, do we?”

Acies: “Hardening.”

Dominus, admiringly: “Very wise. A less mature warrior would have gotten defensive and rejected my prudent suggestion.”

Acies: “Just so you know, I’ll let you get the next shot in—if you’re still able to.”

Dominus, amused: “Will you now?”

Acies: “Ready?”

Dominus, over dramatic: “Not the face. Please not the face.”

Dominus drops the act, regaining his composure and spreading his arms to his sides, as though inviting a loved one into his arms. Acies steps back with his right leg, brings his left arm up to defend his face, pulling his right arm back. Acies then pivots left as he uses his entire body to generate rotational force, delivering a thunderous right cross to Dominus’ midsection. The impact reverberates with a thooming boom, Dominus’ body acting as a living gong.

Acies, as the sound fades: “I never hit anything harder in my life.”

In a flash, Dominus’ hands tighten around Acies still extended fist.

Dominus: “You could have pulled back to avoid my grip.”

Acies: “As I said, next shot is yours.”

Acies leans backward, bracing himself for Dominus’ response.

Dominus, however, merely spins Acies like an Olympic hammer, swinging, then throwing him back to his initial position. Although Acies manages a graceful landing, he appears pensive.

Parvul cloaks herself in her silver metallic aura and begins walking toward Dominus.

Parvul: “You ok big guy?”

Acies: “It’s just …. he’s tough. If he hadn’t warned be to harden myself, my entire arm would have shattered.”

Parvul, with resolute composure: “The fact remains that you’re uninjured. Best not to dwell on what-ifs. It’s my turn now.”

Parvul continues walking till she is just outside of Dominus’ safe zone.

Dominus: “Ahhh, what will it be? Can I withstand an assault by an AI enhanced human?”

Parvul remains silent, extending her arms out. Living metal spreads out from her palms, enclosing the sphere containing Dominus. Once Dominus is completely contained, blocking him from view, Parvul drops her hands to her side. Small openings appear in her metal orb, followed by the hiss of air being drawn out of its interior.

Parvul: “As you’ve realized, I’m sucking all the air out of your enclosure. But don’t worry Dominus, you can easily pass through the shell I’ve created and take in a wonderful breath of fresh, clean air anytime you want. Air is like a lot of things in life. It’s something that you expect will always be there in abundance, so you just take it for granted. However, when you no longer have access to it, it literally becomes the most important thing in your life.”

Parvul, after a few moments: “All the air has now been withdrawn from your safe zone. After 60 seconds of oxygen deprivation, you’ll start to lose consciousness. That’s also when your brain cells begin dying. At three minutes, your neurons will suffer more extensive damage. Permanent brain damage begins after only 4 minutes without oxygen, and death will occur soon after.”

Parvul: “You’re at 30 seconds now, you better hurry up and get out of there before it’s too late.”

Parvul, appearing concerned: “45 seconds.”

Parvul: “60 seconds.”

Several seconds later a soft thud is heard within the orb.

Hiro: “Parvul!”

Potesta, calmly: “It’s her battle Hiro.”

Parvul, intent expression: “I need to be sure. I can’t let all of you down.”

Terridus, concerned about the situation and the toll on her friend: “Parvul.”

Parvul, hyper ventilating: “90 seconds.”

Parvul, sweating despite her AI suit: “2 minutes.”

Parvul, collapsing to her knees: “Sorry everyone, I can’t risk permanently harming him.”

Hiro: “It’s alright Parvul, we understand—that’s not a burden you want to carry for the rest of your life.”

Parvul extends her hands out to the orb’s exterior, reabsorbing the outer shell back into her suit, revealing Dominus sprawled out against the sphere’s invisible support. Parvul rushes in to hover over Dominus. A metallic appendage springs from Parvul’s suit, attaching itself to Dominus’ temple.

Parvul: “I may need to resuscitate. Reading vital signs. Blood pressure normal, no not normal, optimal. Pulse rate, also optimal. Body temperature, optimal. Respiration rate, optimal. Blood oxygen level, optimal. Neural activity … what? Beyond optimal.”

Parvul panics, rapidly withdrawing her probe, but it’s too late. Dominus springs up, with a beaming smile, latching onto her appendage with his left hand, yawning into his right hand. Parvul’s appendage attempts to wrestle itself from his grip to no avail.

Dominus: “You could have left me without oxygen for a longer period, or even attempted to eject me from my sphere prior to checking up on me. But as I said before, none of you are killers. Admirable, if not somewhat misguided. It could cost you your lives one day.”

Parvul, defiantly: “You jerk-head!”

Dominus: “I’ve been called worse. I’ll transform the noun form of ‘jerk’ to respond with its verb form.”

Dominus jerks his wrist, launching Parvul on a trajectory back to her starting spot.

Potesta begins walking toward Dominus.

Potesta: “You’re quite an interesting character.”

Dominus, hopefully: “So, have you reconsidered joining my group then?”

Potesta, matter-of-factly: “Absolutely not. You’re just an unsolved puzzle to me.”

Dominus, feigning shivers: “So cold.”

Upon reaching the perimeter of Dominus’ sphere, Potesta reaches into her cape to withdraw a small metal spray cannister.

Dominus is overcome with curiosity as he tries to determine what surprise Potesta has in store for him.

Dominus: “Are you trying to suggest that I haven’t showered today?”

Potesta: “Enlighten me, what makes you say that?”

Dominus: “That’s a can of deodorant you’re holding, isn’t it?”

Potesta, impervious to Dominus’ attempt at humor: “Absurd.”

Potesta walks to a point beneath Dominus.

Potesta: “Hold still, will you? You did say we can get the first shot in, didn’t you?”

Dominus, with exaggerated grace: “Of course my lady.”

Potesta directs the can at the underside of Dominus’s boots and begins spraying.

Dominus: “So not my underarms, but rather my feet are malodourous?”

Ignoring him, Potesta completes spraying, tucking the aerosol can back into her cape.

Dominus sways slightly and appears to struggle with his balance. Potesta, remaining outside of his safe zone sphere, walks around to a point where she is facing Dominus.

Potesta: “One of my companies developed it. It’s the ultimate product to reduce friction to near-zero viscosity.”

Dominus, wobbling, but still excited: “This is revolutionary! The commercial applications are limitless. Let’s market it together. Let me think. Ahhh, that’s it—we’ll call it ‘Super Slip’.”

Potesta, dispassionately: “I don’t think so.”

Potesta breaths in deeply through her nose, then exhales forcefully out of her mouth in Dominus’ direction. As Potesta’s expelled air hits Dominus, he begins to slide slowly backward and away from her toward the opposite end of his safety zone.

Dominus, sniffing the air: “Not unpleasant at all. Yes, my dear, your breath is minty fresh.”

Potesta, confidently: “Of course it is.”

Dominus looks over his left shoulder as he approaches perilously close to the perimeter. Suddenly, he begins running, pumping his arms, to prevent expulsion from his safety zone, but his feet aren’t able to gain any traction.

Dominus, with exaggerated angst: “Yaaahhhhh!”

Potesta: “Running in place like that won’t help.”

Even so, Dominus legs and arms begin pumping even faster.

Potesta: “Don’t blame me if you slip and hurt yourself.”

Dominus however keeps increasing his effort, running in place even faster till he becomes a blur, surpassing the performance of an engine’s pistons. Faint wisps of smoke begin to emanate from the point where his boots are impacting on the invisible surface.

Potesta’s eyes narrow: “Oh, I see. Although, a normal human wouldn’t be capable of such a feat. It’s regrettable, but I’ve also failed.”

Potesta starts walking back to her original position.

Hiro: “Why are you giving up Potesta? It’s working, he’ll be carried past the outer boundary soon.”

Potesta disagrees, shaking her head from side to side as she continues to walk away. Flames shoot out from under Dominus’ feet, followed by the aroma of burnt oil. Dominus’ progress toward the outer perimeter halts prompting Dominus to reduce his pace till he is stationary once again.

Dominus, wiping his brow: “Very refreshing—I skipped my workout earlier today so that really hit the spot.”

Parvul: “Ugh, is this guy for real?”

Lastly, Hiro walks to a position in front of Dominus and sits down cross-legged facing him.

Dominus: “So, what type of attack will it be then? I’m brimming with anticipation.”

Hiro: “Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m not attacking. I just want to talk.”

Parvul opines: “Great, he’s going to talk him to death. We’re doomed.”

Dominus: “No offense, but that sounds rather boring. I’d really prefer it if you would attack me.”

Hiro, glancing up at the clock: “No can do. There’s still 2 minutes on the timer so you’ll have to tolerate me till then.”

Dominus: “You surprise me—you don’t seem like the quitting type.”

Hiro: “If none of my friends were able to defeat you, then how can I hope to win? Still, it’s not like we can’t try again, since this is just a demonstration of yours, correct?”

Dominus: “True, you can challenge me as many times as you like. And perhaps by engaging me in conversation I will inadvertently let some critical piece of information slip?”

Hiro: “Well …”

Dominus: “It’s fine, you can ask me anything.”

Hiro, eagerly: “How did you get three beautiful women to fall for you at the same time?”

In response to Hiro’s question, Terridus blushes, Artifice’s eyes narrow, and Potesta laughs.

Parvul, furious: “Idiot. We’re on a mission here you know. Is that the best you can do?”

Dominus, preening: “It’s all part of being an alpha male.”

Dominus’ expression changes to one of disappointment as he looks judgmentally at Hiro.

Dominus: “You’ve got a mountain of work ahead of you to attain that height.”

Hiro: “Sorry I asked. What are you willing to tell me about the Nihilist?”

Dominus: “Very direct, I like that. I can’t overstate how powerful he is. The organization he leads has their hands in everything. Going up against him is suicide.”

Hiro: “But he’s the one targeting me.”

Dominus: “Then you’re already dead.”

Hiro: “No, I won’t accept that. There has to be a way to defeat him. If he’s so dangerous, then why are you working with him?”

Dominus: “It’s complicated. Suffice to say, a visionary like me who has extraordinary goals must take some calculated risks on the journey to success.”

Hiro: “What’s your end game then?”

Dominus, looking up at the timer: “Appears we’re out of time, unfortunate our chat is ending so soon. Tell you what, if you and your friends manage to defeat me, I’ll throw that answer in as a bonus.”

The timer reaches zero, so Dominus stretches his arms above his head and walks out of the safety zone.

Hiro instantly jumps up and down in celebration.

Hiro: “Yay, we win!”

Dominus: “But the clock showed zero. After all, it was you who requested a time limit.”

Hiro, self-satisfied: “Sorry to tell you this Dominus, but I tricked you. While you were distracted running at full speed to counter Potesta’s attack, I used a combination of Technology and Quantum abilities to force your timer to skip ahead by 30 seconds. So, you actually walked out of your safety zone of your own volition before the 15 minutes had passed.”

Dominus: “Very clever. By the way, you were supposed to attack me one at a time, so modifying the clock during Potesta’s attack could be viewed as cheating.”

Hiro, embarrassed, looks down: “Well, umm.”

Hiro, looking back up: “It’s not like I interfered with your battle with Potesta at all.”

Dominus: “Do you expect me take your word for this?”

Hiro: “Parvul will confirm it then. Oh, that’s right, she’s on my team so you have no reason to trust her.”

Dominus: “Not at all, I expect Parvul’s honor will dictate that she is completely truthful.”

Hiro: “Go ahead Parvul, tell him.”

Parvul: “Replaying and confirming. Dominus is correct, the full 15 minutes had passed prior to his leaving the safety zone.”

Hiro: “What? How can that be? I know I made the clock skip ahead.”

Dominus: “Although I appeared too busy to notice your machinations while I was contending with Potesta, I did notice. I was able to take a counter measure, slowing the clock’s time keeping mechanism to ensure it counted down to zero at precisely the correct moment.”

Hiro’s shoulders slump as he walks back to his starting position.

Acies: “Good try Hiro, we’ll get him next time.”

Hiro, regaining his posture: “You’re right Acies, we sure will.”

Potesta: “Dominus, now that your demonstration is over, are you going to explain your outfit?”

Dominus: “Yes, of course, it’s my crowning achievement—it nullifies alliance attacks.”

Artifice: “How is that even possible? I understand that countermeasures to a specific alliance can be taken, but how could it negate such a wide range of fundamentally diverse attacks?”

Dominus: “Everything exists as a wave, so you just need to quantify it and generate the inverse wave to nullify it.”

Sloth: “Sill, that’s an incredible feat, translating an attack into its corresponding wave frequency and amplitude, then generating an almost instantaneous inverse response.”

Dominus, preening: “Yes, I sometimes amaze even myself. Of course, it only works when an attack comes into direct contact with my suit. Depending on the power of the incoming attack, the nullification can be full or only partial.”

Acies: “You could make a fortune selling that suit.”

Potesta: “I suspect that isn’t true—Dominus isn’t telling us everything.”

Dominus: “Oh, really. Care to elaborate?”

Potesta: “If that suit just amplifies your natural abilities, then it won’t work for anyone else.”

Dominus: “It’s an interesting theory, but pure speculation. So, let’s get back to the task at hand. Would all of you care to take me on simultaneously?”

Hiro: “Yes, let’s do it.”

Acies, rubbing his hands: “Yeah, I sure would like another shot at you.”

Terridus, Parvul, and Potesta all nod in agreement, while Sloth lets out a snorting snore.

Artifice, nodding: “‘I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.’”

Dominus: “Marvelous quote—Harper Lee, from To Kill a Mockingbird. Be aware, I’m not going to sit around and let you get a free shot in this time. Ready?”

Artifice: “One moment.”

Artifice is enveloped in her blue aura and reaches out, creating a linkage with her friends. A shared warmth of comradery spreads amongst them.

Artifice, thinking: “In this way, we can coordinate our attacks.”

All of them, except Hiro, engage their Alliance auras in preparation for the battle.

Together, thinking: “We’re ready!”

Artifice, to Dominus: “You may begin.”

Dominus smiles enthusiastically: “Let’s start the countdown. 3 … 2 … 1 … go”

Dominus immediately explodes outward with incredible velocity, reaching Artifice and extending his two open palms outward—without even touching her the shockwave renders her unconscious, causing the abrupt severing of her psychic network. The backlash from this disorients her team members, nullifying their auras. One by one, Dominus speeds by each of his opponents, knocking them out in the same manner. Sometime later within Dominus’ throne room, they are brought back to consciousness as Puppy, Kitty, and Bunny wave smelling salts under their noses.

Parvul: “Ouch, my head is killing me. Did anyone get the license plate of the truck that hit me?”

Dominus, beaming proudly: “That would be me. Having a psychic link during a battle can provide a tremendous advantage. It can also be a huge liability if your network facilitator is left unprotected.”

Puppy: “Master, you were truly wonderful. Woof woof.”

Kitty: “Let me help you celebrate your victory later tonight. Meow meow.”

Bunny: “No fair, tonight ’s my turn. Hop hop.”

Dominus: “Don’t worry my beauties, there’s enough of me to go around.”

Acies: “I already felt bad about losing to him again, but that’s just rubbing salt in the wound.”

Parvul: “Ugh, he looks like such a wimpy, pretty boy. How is he beating us so easily?”

Dominus: “That’s very unkind—no one likes a sore loser. How about this, I will remove my outer suit to fight you with only my birthday suit on?”

Others are appalled, but Potesta just looks dejected.

Dominus, to Potesta: “So, you see the truth of it then.”

Hiro: “Potesta, what’s wrong? Why do you look so downcast?”

Potesta: “I’ve played out the scenarios. Even without his suit, we can’t defeat him. We’re just not strong enough.”

Hiro: “Sure we made some mistakes, but we can do better.”

Potesta: “I’d agree with you if he was really trying earlier, but …”

Hiro: “How can that be, we gave it all we had. Without his suit, he’d have been a goner.”

Potesta: “Sorry, but that’s just not the case. Even without his suit, there’s something about him that puts him in a different league than us.”

Dominus: “‘Fere libenter homines id quod volunt credunt’—men generally believe what they want to believe. But you know, she’s right Hiro. In fact, I wish you were capable of defeating me, but as you are now, it is inconceivable. Perhaps one day when you manifest your true power, you’ll have a fighting chance—let’s hope so (eager, smiling at the prospect). I actually could have killed you all, but that would have been a such waste. So come back and fight me once you’re stronger—much, much stronger.”

Acies: “We’ve just been fed a multi-course dinner of humble pie.”

Artifice: “Still, I don’t get how he can be so superior to us.”

Dominus: “Ah yes, did I mention my father is a god? So that makes me a demi-god I guess.”

Parvul, rolling her eyes exasperated: “Now he tells us.”

Dominus: “Form a psychic connection with me, and I’ll privilege you with a glimpse into my past.”

Scene 1:

A younger, bruised Dominus, sword in hand, is training with a burly, handsome, glowing figure.

Dominus: “Again father.”

Dominus’ father: “Very well, come at me once again.”

Dominus sprints in weaving fashion until he is just about to strike his father, but instead leaps into the air, lands behind him, launching a sweeping strike against him.”

Without looking behind him, his father extends his lefthand overhead, catching Dominus’ blade before it connects with the back of his head. He then flicks his hand overheard releasing his hold on the sword blade, launching Dominus into the air.

Dominus, voice fading as he’s flying away: “That was my closest attack yet.”

Dominus’ father: “As long as you train with me and seek out strong opponents, you will become the best at whatever you choose to pursue.”

Scene 2:

Dominus: “Father, take me with you.”

Dominus’ father: “You aren’t strong enough to survive in the higher dimension realm. For now, you must continue your training in the human realm.”

Dominus: “I fear no one is capable of defeating me here.”

Dominus’ father: “I assure you someone will come along—they always do.”

Dominus’ father opens a portal, passing through it, leaving Dominus standing there looking downcast.

Back in the present:

Hiro: “That couldn’t have been easy.”

Dominus: “It wasn’t, but I’m going to keep getting stronger so I can ascend to that higher dimension plane. One day, I’m going to punch my old man in the face for leaving me and mother here alone.”

Parvul, under her breath: “Thanks for the family history, but we all have our own issues you know.”

Terridus: “Parvul! I think it’s nice that he opened up to us like that.”

Parvul: “Fine, fine, but how are we supposed to defeat Proelium when we can’t even get through this side mission?”

Dominus: “Ahhh Terridus, so sweet. Back to matters at hand. As agreed, you lost, so you won’t be getting any supplies from me and you’ll need to leave. Oh, and by the way, funny thing really, but Proelium is actually one of my personas.”

Parvul, enraged: “Rrrrrr, how many secrets is this guy keeping? Let me at em’, I’m gonna kill him.”

Terridus holds onto Parvul as she lunges at Dominus.

Dominus, raising and waiving his open palms: “Wait, give me a chance and hear me out.”

Parvul grumbles, but subsides, staring fiery at Dominus.

Artifice, eyes narrowed: “Our meeting here wasn’t just a coincidence. How did you know we’d be stopping at this moon en route to Metallicus?”

Dominus: “The Nihilist told me that your belief in Proelium’s presence on Metallicus would lead you here. He predicted that once I informed Numine that I, as Proelium, was on Metallicus, she would pass that information on to you, inducing you to stop here. In fact, I was never on Metallicus.”

Hiro: “We were hoping to confront Proelium and force him to reveal the Nihilist’s location. But since you’re Proelium and you’ve already defeated us, we’re at a dead end.”

Dominus, jovially: “Not at all, the Nihilist is on the Order Alliance home world of Cohibere.”

Hiro, suspiciously: “Wait, why would you help us?”

Dominus: “I agreed to deliver you to the Nihilist. Much easier for me if you do it of your own free will.”

Potesta, to Dominus: “Even so, Cohibere is home to billions of people. If the Nihilist is as powerful as you say he is and wants to remain hidden, then we have little hope of finding him.”

Dominus: “That would be true, if he was evading you, but he’s actually looking forward to meeting with you. The Nihilist is expecting you on Cohibere—you won’t need to find him, he’ll find you.”

Artifice: “That’s what I’m afraid of. Without the element of surprise on our size, it seems like we’ll be walking into a trap on his home turf.”

Dominus, shrugging his shoulders: “The Nihilist is a genius, even among the most brilliant members of the Order Alliance. So of course, this is all going according to his plan.”

Terridus, earnestly: “But now that we know it’s part of the Nihilist’s plan we don’t have to go there, do we?”

Hiro: “I can’t force any of you to walk into what might be a trap, but I have to do this. If I don’t, he’ll continue to pursue us and innocent people will get hurt.”

Acies: “I got your back buddy. Besides, facing another tough opponent will help me get stronger for my rematch with Dominus.”

Artifice: “Hanging out with you Hiro is crazy dangerous, but going back to a normal, calm life seems like it would be incredibly boring now—so count me in.”

Sloth, mumbling in his sleep: “Sleep over at Hiro’s. Yeah!”

Parvul: “Of course I’m coming, you’ll wind up doing something stupid and getting yourself killed if I’m not there to look out for you.”

Potesta: “Cohibere is my home world after all—of course I’m going.”

Terridus, resolutely: “I’m not afraid. Don’t leave me behind. I want to come too!

Hiro gets teary eyed, embracing all of them in a group hug. Potesta appears to do her best to tolerate it. Although asleep, the corner of Sloth’s lip appears to curl up in a smile. Acies is very happy to share in the group affection. Predictably, Parvul, Terridus, and Artifice blush rose red, fidgeting uncomfortably.

Dominus: “Given my own selfish desire for strong opponents, I’m glad you’re taking on this challenge since it will make you stronger. Still, no way to know what the Nihilist has in store for you, so no guarantee you’ll survive it.”

Parvul: “Way to kill the mood party pooper. Make sure you never apply for a job as a cheerleader.”

Dominus: “I’m too much of a pragmatist to be optimistic. Instead, here’s some advice. If you’re too soft, if you hesitate, you won’t get a second chance. So, if you get an opportunity, be sure to seize on it and make it count.”

Dominus, sternly: “Now, my playtime is over. Time for you to be on your way.”

The friends slowly start to make their way toward the front door.

Parvul, irritated: “I’ll show him playtime. Such arrogance for someone living in a pigsty.”

Potesta: “Like other things about Dominus, this physical façade he presents may actually belie a different reality.”

Puppy: “Ha, I’m shocked, one of them finally figured it out.”

Kitty: “I don’t know how the three of us kept a straight face this entire time. Seriously, a ramshackle building in the middle of a garbage dump?”

Bunny: “What a bunch of rubes.”

Terridus: “What’s a rube?”

Puppy: “You gotta be kiddin me.”

Kitty: “You know, a chump, sucker, patsy, pushover, stooge.”

Embarrassed, Terridus blushes and bows her head down.

Acies: “So you mean that part about Dominus being your ‘Master’ was all part of the act?”

Dominus: “Not that part.”

Bunny, smirking: “We let him think he’s in charge.”

Hiro: “And the animal outfits?”

Puppy: “He gets off on it, so we humor him sometimes.”

Acies, after the friends pass through the front door: “One thing I don’t understand—why didn’t Hiro’s power kick in against Dominus?”

Potesta: “Hiro’s power seems to manifest on its own only when he is in imminent mortal danger. Dominus upheld his promise not to harm us, so none of us were in any real danger.”

The friends quietly walk back to and board their ship, in preparation for the final segment of their journey.
