Chapter 12:

Aftermath

Child Of Darkness

"You felt it too," Asmodeus grinned, "Didn't you?"

"Yes," Erebus smiled at him.

It was an evil smirk that reeked of triumph, as if all of his plans were moving forward just like he expected. Sprawled across his throne of blood, he had his chin propped on his hand, the obsidian crown on his head glinting in the dim light of the moon. On his white doublet, there was an emblazoned crimson rendering of the ancient symbol of Chaos and Order. His dark cloak fell gracefully around him and his throne.

His golden eyes glinted with coldness as he glanced towards the standing Asmodeus, a silent message passing between them.

He understood his mistake, and without wasting a second Asmodeus bowed down in submission in front of his king, Erebus.

"Now,” Erebus drawled, “tell me about it"

"Yes, my lord," Asmodeus spoke. I just sensed a flux in spiritual Aura coming from the North-Eastern Aviona, in the Kingdom of Azrestria. At first I thought it was just one of those Enigma transformations but- but it was different, the spiritual Aura that I sensed didn't belong to this world. So I tried to look into it and that's when I found it was him…"

He paused as if to catch his breath before beginning once again.

"He has awakened, my King. The First one has awakened."

Erebus's eyes scanned the face of Asmodeus trying to find even a glint of fear or hesitation but there was none. He smiled coldly as he realized that the time has finally arrived. His sadistic smile spread across his face as all the wheels of his plan finally began to move.

"Meet me at the City Guild tomorrow."

Beatrix had whispered softly into Aiden's ears, before once again disappearing into the crack.

He opened his mouth to call her back, and explain everything but no words, not even a breath came out. The mysterious power that had surged through him just few minutes ago drained away and exhaustion had taken its place.

The pain that had been kept at bay by the adrenaline came back came crashing down on Aiden. He took a step towards Beatrix in a last attempt to stop her, but his feet never made contact with the ground.

'Why? Why… I-is the ground so close?' Aiden wondered as his exhausted body fell down, the green grass coming closer with each passing second until he couldn't see it at all. It wasn't until his face had crashed on the grass that he understood that he was falling.

He tried to get up, but couldn't. He wanted to use his hands and push his body up, but his arms would no longer obey him. He wasn't breathing anymore, but he hadn't noticed.

"Aiden..?” Kudelia turned and saw him lying on the ground. “AIDEN!" she screamed when she saw him lying on the ground with blood trickling from his left arm. Kudelia, despite being injured, her face filled with concern and despair, ran forward towards Aiden, scared that he was going to die.

Kudelia leaned down, reaching her hand out. Only now did Aiden realize that she had been saved. He had been successful in protecting Miss Kudelia.

She reached out and touched him, her fingers finding the exact spot where there was small hole in his shirt.

Aiden was feeling no pain; just a sense of tiredness and resignation.

Aiden Kualasis smiled and closed his eyes.
