Chapter 1:

An interesting voicemail

Life to it's fullest

I noticed my voicemail indicator on my desk phone was lit up.  I sat down then listened to the message; "Morning Jim, Carrie here, if Liam asks you out you can go with my blessing." I couldn't believe my ears. The mother of the boy who has my heart just gave her blessing. I wasn't surprised, but nervous; I made it through my morning classes and went to supervise morning recess. "May I patrol with you Coach?" Liam asked when I found him at his usual hideout, the accessible playground which was in severe disrepair. "Sure Liam I always have good patrols when you join." I said which caused him to do an aw shucks look at his foot sweeping the gravel as his face flushed; "The repairs are coming along nicely." "I just don't get why the other kids talk about me behind my back." "Yeah, this age range is tougher for some and they compensate by bullying others." I said as another boy approached. "What's the point of using your one break fixing the crippled kids playset, eh Weissleberg...?" "You ever lookup the meaning of crippled, Master Edger?" I asked and he just shrugged spun around on his back foot and took off; "Little punk, he is a prime example of what I meant." "It's just the crew that he was born into, according to mom." Just then I heard the principal call out the code word for a fight and then my phone began to ring. I ran to the cafeteria were a few other teachers were already retaking control. I then noticed my son's tipped over wheelchair. "Jim...!" Liam yelled bringing me back to reality. "Where is he, Alex...?" I roared at the SRO. "He is over to your right! Let Maggie do her job, he was collateral damage, not involved." Liam gave my hand a squeeze and I noticed Maggie had Jimmie on her hip and was bringing him over to me; "I think his harness prevented any major injury, I think he should have lunch with dad for a while to make sure he's mentally ready." "Damn straight I'm eating with dad, four times in one school year that is enough, besides look what they did to my chair...!" Just then I heard Principal Maddox announce that the rest of classes were being canceled and those who walked to school were dismissed. "Well Coach it seems we've been cut loose, care to join me for a proper lunch, I'm buying?" "As long as you don't mind my chaperone coming along, I'd love too." "Yeah no funny business you two...!" Jimmie giggled as Maggie transferred him onto my hip. Liam and I both must have blushed because Maggie told Jimmie to behave. Liam went over and retrieved Jimmie's mangled wheelchair; "Christ, how did you not get hurt Munchkin?" "Silly Daddy Li, that's how my brother PJ designs them. It's along the same lines as the Formula 1 race cars are." "Okay what gives both him and my mom seem to think we have been an item longer than we have been? Not that I mind." Liam said we headed for my truck in the faculty parking. "you really want to be a partner to someone that has grandkids who could be your classmates?" I asked as I opened the rear driver side door and placed him into his booster seat. "Jim I happen to like that actually if I can be so blunt it is one of the biggest attractions for me." Li said as we got into the truck. "I'm shocked but in a flattering way." "I have wanted to have a more intimate relationship with you too for a long time but I couldn't until yesterday, without risking everything." "My family wouldn't have minded but I understand." "Yeah I had a voicemail from your mom bestowing her blessing on my being your partner!" "Oh my...!" Liam started to growl but interrupted him by kissing him. "You are going to thank her so much because her voicemail is why I felt comfortable doing that." I said as my second eldest son pulled into the parking space beside us to swap his brother's wheelchair out for a new one. "Christ Almighty, what happened Jimmie?" "Ask your fucking husband, if he wasn't texting someone instead of doing his job, this could have been avoided, I have proof he was texting too!" "Alex you got some explaining to do!" PJ snarled. "Hon, can we not have this discussion over the phone please?" "Fine get down here to the diner we're calling a family meeting!" "Please don't call Timmy...?" "Your 6 year old brother in law already did that as well as getting security and body cam footage!" "Jesus, PJ please, if a suit gets filed I toast!" "Not to mention divorced and probably castrated as well!" PJ roared as Jayson and Tim pulled in beside PJ. Jimmie, Liam and I went in and secured our usual family meeting area. The next to enter was Tim, stopping at the coat rack to remove his suit coat and his cap. "Geez it's like you were coming out of the 1950s...!" Jimmie giggled. "Why do people always react like that, I am just trying to keep my jacket clean along with trying to use proper manners and not have a hat on at the table, Uncle Peter...?" Timmy held out his hand until PJ surrendered his baseball cap.  Tim went and hung up PJ's cap. He returned and placed his briefcase on the table as Alex arrived with a toddler on his hip. "He's not the reason you froze up again, is he?" PJ grumbled as Alex sat down. "First thing I have to ask Uncle, is are you going to grow some adult balls and tell us your true relationship to Ollie?" Tim asked as he got a document ready to pass around the table. "He's mine...!" Alex sobbed. "I thought, oh snap, forget lawsuit but is there anything you can do to help Uncle Alex secured custody...?" "I am willing to help but I want you to have all medical situations to be run by my brother, Dad or Saba is that understandable and acceptable?" Tim asked. "Also I am named as primary caregiver...!" "Really Dad...you'd do that?" "Absolutely...!" I said as Ollie reached over for me so I took him on to my left knee next to Jimmie on my right. "Hell yeah...! He's my grandson, same as Timothy here...!" "Saba me eat please?" Ollie asked. "Sure Ollie, what do you want?" "Chicken and waffles please...!" Ollie declared rubbing his chubby belly. "Okay my little pudgy bear." I said. I flagged down the waitress and said we were ready to order. Tim apparently finished what he needed to do with his laptop because he had everything back in and placed the case on the floor as our food arrived. "Cousin Timothy...?" Ollie asked in between bites. "Yeah little buddy?" Tim responded. "How do I go about issuing a no contact order to my mom?" "Already taken care of little man." Tim said as his phone rang. He snapped his fingers and pointed to me then again at his phone before answering; "This is Timothy Steven Dutton Esq, how can I assist you today?" "This is Daniela Rosario I was wondering if your offer is still open for my grandson Miguel...?" "Absolutely ma'am, my grandfather is actually right next to me. I take it you and Miguel's mother are being forced to return to Caracas...? I am so sorry...!" "Thank you for saving Miguel from being uprooted at least, it makes our leaving a bit more bearable knowing he doesn't have to suffer from our mistakes. I believe he's at the library." "Okay I'll go pick him up right now." I said as I passed Ollie back to Alex as I stood and placed Jimmie on my hip. As Liam and I walked holding hands a couple of teens began to spout a bunch of insults our way and Liam actually began laughing when one of the teens asked how could I ask a 10 year old out. "Actually dumbass I asked him out and paid so shut your bigotry filled manure eating pie holes." Liam roared as I strapped Jimmie into his booster seat. "As my future husband so aptly said you've got a lot of bigotry and hateful words but I pray you see the error of your rhetoric. Oh and by the way, Jesus loves you and so do we!" I called out after I got behind the wheel. "I can't wait till I can erase the future part." Liam said then we kissed. "Patience little love, patience...!" I sighed before I started the truck and headed for the library. I pulled up as Miguel was being encircled by trouble makers. "Miguel, come on kiddo. Hey Antonio, cross my Godson off your list of victims, you pathetic little pussy!" "Sorry Gunny I didn't realize he was one of yours...! Let's go guys...!" "Antonio I have 99.9 percent of my godchildren in this County I doubt there is more than a handful of kids who aren't somehow members of my family in one way or another. If I were you I'd leave the county alone!" "Hi Papi Nanna and mama got to go back, it sucks but I get to stay because I am American and you are able to be my guardian." Antonio said excitedly. "Hi Bubby...!" "Hey Liam is your Facebook status true or troll?" "True as this...!" I said then gave Liam a passionate kiss. "I guess I get to be the babysitting big brother after all." "Well Ant-man that would work wonderfully." Jimmie giggled. I heard Miguel click his seatbelt which was the cue I was waiting for. I aimed homeward reaching the driveway about 25 minutes later.
