The Fool's Arcadia: Prologue

Magic, a mysterious form of power that has been rediscovered by mankind during the first great war. 1914, the first Great war ever seen by humanity was triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and it was the first ever war that humanity will see magic being used alongside the power of modern heavy weaponry. Since the dawn of mankind, humans have thought of magic, alchemy and other sorts of unexplainable powers as sacred powers that only chosen humans can wield.

During the mid-centuries, Europe was entering a period also known as the Dark Ages, Witch Hunts began because magic was framed as devil’s art and anyone who practised it was hunted and subjected to trials, if the victim was found guilty by the church’s jury, they were burned in public. The situation only eased up during the Victorian Era. Magic at the time period was once again popular and people treated them as shows.

Due to the Witch Hunts during the dark ages, most documentation of magic was lost, and people didn’t have the required resources to study magic, so it came to a halt. Alchemy on the other hand was driven by the greediness of mankind and alchemist never stopped with underground sages of the time gathering and continuing studies on this power.

After the Victorian Era shortly came the first Great War, also known as World War 1. Magic usage in combat was considered an advantage and the first country who saw the overwhelming advantage of this was Germany, mages would infuse their rifles with magic and this action will soon lay the groundwork for the so-called “Wands”, weapon systems made to house and amplify the magnitude of magic in terms of accuracy, proficiency and power.

The Central Powers weren’t the only ones getting mages, Entente Powers were starting to notice the disadvantages that they were in, and they started to recruit mages. They spread the news in their own respective countries. Mages who were once hiding in plain sight saw the opportunity and stepped out into the light, joining the military to fight back the Central Powers. Due to the manpower and money brought into the war by the United States of America, the tables started to turn, and the rest was history.

After the First Great War resulted in Central Powers’ defeat, the usage of magic in combat was an indispensable asset in one’s military assets. Special Mages squadrons and battalions are introduced into the military, but due to the heavy expenses that come with cultivating combat-ready mages, the number of active personnel remains low.

The progression of magic skyrocketed after this, but not so much on the military stage. Commercial use for magic has also become the norm, although normal humans cannot use magic, mages are now up for hire. Companies are also set up to study the history of magic and how innovative can humanity use magic, soon after magic schools started to rise.

But things didn’t last long, the second great war would start 2 decades after the first one. Due to the harsh defeat of the Central powers. Germany, being the leader of the Central powers and the only one that faced harsh consequences of waging war due to the Treaty of Versailles, the people of Germany cannot stand up towards the oppression they are living in after the new government The Weimar Republic was formed.

One man by the name of Adolf Hitler rallied up the oppressed Germans and rose to power at a significantly fast pace. Soon after some struggle within Germany, The German war machine will soon roar to life, at first no one anticipated much, until they invaded Poland which Britain and France then declared war on Nazi Germany.

During the early stages of World War 2, Germany extensively uses mechanized troops and with that brought forward a new form of warfare which utilizes magic within the mechanized divisions. Although not much different from the last war with mages enhancing mass-produced weapons, this time the Germans created special rounds specially tailored for the mage divisions' usage. This proves to be an early advantage for the Nazis in the early stages of the war.

The German War Machine looks to be unstoppable until the USA joined in on the war after the Imperial Japanese did an offensive on Pearl Harbor which brought the industrial giant into the war. Alongside manpower, the USA also brought in money and new weapons to help relieve the front lines, and on 6th June 1944, the Allies launched an all-out assault on Germany landing their main forces on the beaches of Normandy.

Nazi Germany at this point in time was fighting a 2-front war with the Soviets as well as with the Allies, they did have the technological and raw material edge at the beginning to the mid part of the war, but as time goes by due to the fronts and how harsh Russian winters are, the German war machine slowly ground to a halt.

The war raged on for years to come until the tides turned when the Japanese Empire brought the mighty industrial power of the United States of America into full force. Forcing them to join the war, proved to be a good thing for the Allies as this brought new manpower and money into the equation. This allowed them to fight the Axis power better and soon come to the downfall of the Axis power on D-day.

This continues to look worse for the German war machines as they yet again find themselves fighting a two-front war yet again with the Soviets at the Eastern flank and fighting the Allies at the Western flank. The war came to an end in 1945 and marks the world’s harshest loss of human life.

After the war, countries saw the potential of magicians and started to open schools and research institutes that research the mysterious power known as magic, alongside the research of magic, topics like alchemy and other forms of mysterious powers are also researched, thus the formation of modern magic came into being. Modern magic is a form of magic different from ancient magic like omyoudo, although the basic invocation still revolves around language processors inside our brain, there are advancements towards the magic casting system.

Magic is still in its infancy even with 21st-century technology, everything that revolves around magic is still new to humankind… only time will tell what light sheds on the magicians.
