Chapter 5:

Want to see a funny photo I took yesterday?

Winning a Swan in a Crane Game

The student council room was a place Goda had become familiar with as of late. It had actually been a member of the teaching staff's idea to have the current vice president supervise Goda during the course of his suspension. To make sure he avoided further trouble and completed the letters of apology along with the online course. Needless to say he hadn't started on either yet, but could visit the student council room under the guise of asking for advice on writing the letters...or something. Procrastinator that he was, he felt compelled to leave all the work until the very last minute. But if his "supervisor's" bombardment of messages asking him for updates or drafts of the letters was anything to go by, Goda would have to get it done sooner rather than later.

Upon reaching the hallway where the student council was located Goda's resolve began to show cracks and he crouched down in an effort to make his presence less obvious. As bad as he wanted to see Nakahara, there were also members of the student council he'd rather not see right now. The vice president for one. Both he and that secretary, who'd proven unpleasant in every interaction they'd had so far. The president he wasn't so worried about. Not like they were ever around anyway. In fact part of the student body was convinced the president didn't even exist, so rarely did they uphold their duties.

Still crouched, Goda shuffled his way over to the closed door and listened for voices he could recognize. And while he could hear some amicable back and forth between two individuals, he couldn't say with certainty who the voices belonged to. At the very least they didn't sound like male voices which ruled out the vice president. Fears quelled for the time being, he rose up in front of the door and reached for the handle before recalling the previous time he'd been scolded for not knocking properly. So he did.

*kon kon kon

Nailed it. The knock had been loud enough to firmly announce his presence to the other side, but not so forceful as to deter the occupants from answering in a timely manner. Immediately Goda heard the sounds of unrushed footsteps approaching the door. They seemed to wait a moment before answering, collecting themselves maybe? The door finally creaked open halfway and he met the gaze of the girl he'd been searching for all of twenty minutes. A grin broke out over his face.

"Fancy meeting you here Naka—" *Thud!

His face was met by the smooth wooden surface of the door once again. And Goda could hear Nakahara subsequently informing the other room's occupant that their visitor had the wrong room. A bold statement considering the student council room was clearly labeled as such. To hell with the formalities. This time he barged in and sought the gaze of his antagonizer.

"Ok rude, at least let me finish talking before closing the door in my face!"

Nakahara looked as unfazed at his presence as she had at the door and topped it off with an exaggerated roll of the eyes. "Then go ahead and finish your thought. The faster you do, the faster I get to close the door on you again."

"Hara." He finished the thought, and stood in place with his arms crossed. Practically daring her to force him out and shut the door again. For her part Nakahara narrowed her eyes in contempt and began approaching him to try, only to be stopped by the other female presence in the room.

"Easy there Nakahara, Aikawa-kun is a guest. Not to mention if the student council made a habit of driving visitors away we'll be in for it." The girl turned towards Goda and gestured towards the table in the middle of the room. "Sorry about that Aikawa-kun, take a seat if you'd like."

Goda took the council member up on their offer and even made a show of choosing which chair he wanted to sit in out of the four options. For the sole purpose of further irritating Nakahara of course.

The girl sighed audibly at the actions of the two. "Let's try to get along you two. You're in the same boat after all."

That got Goda's attention, he raised his hand emphatically. "Senpai, what do you mean by that?"

Nakahara actually looked concerned for a moment as she gave her senpai a beseeching look. "Senpai, that's personal!"

"Senpai! Nakahara's trying to sink the boat!"

"Why sink the boat if I can just throw you overboard!"

Goda sat quietly for a moment, contemplating his next move and settled on glancing over at his senpai again. "Senpai, want to see a funny photo I took yesterday?"

"You said you'd delete that!"

"That's enough you two. Honestly, they're going to think that someone's being murdered over here."

"They'll be on the right track if he doesn't delete that photo..." Nakahara growled, before settling in the chair furthest from Goda.

"You in the student council senpai?" He hadn't seen her during previous visits. Might as well learn the name of the person shielding him from Nakahara's full wrath.

"That's right, we haven't been formally introduced have we. Name's Hoga Miki, I'm the student council's treasurer. Nice to meet 'cha.

"Likewise. You already seem familiar with me?"

Hoga-senpai took a seat in the chair across from him, "Afraid so, Kyouhei's mentioned you and your situation a few times."

"In my defense I didn't exactly ask to be supervised." Goda raised his hands in submission.

"It's no trouble, helps pass the time when I'm going over the books."

"So what's she doing here?" Goda gestured a thumb toward Nakahara who'd been sitting silently during their exchange. It was obvious his presence still bothered her, but she seemed to have calm down a little.

Hoga-senpai gave Nakahara a look of reassurance before turning back to Goda. "You know how your being supervised by Kyouhei, well Nakahara is being supervised by me."

Goda gave an inquisitive look at the room's now silent occupant.

"You get suspended too?"

Hoga-senpai spoke up in place of Nakahara who looked as if she was about to get worked up again. "I can't confirm or deny anything regarding the personal matters of another student, but I can say that her situation isn't quite as serious as yours. Let's leave it at that."

Goda considered Hoga-senpai's words while persisting in his stare at Nakahara. Is that why she's killing time searching for gifts and helping other clubs? They really might be in the same boat after all. Settling on his next course of action, boat pun intended, Goda reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He opened the photos app and slid it across the table towards Nakahara.

"Delete it yourself, doubt you'll take my word for it anyway." He quickly added, "And no snooping at my other photos! Their's nothing pervy or inappropriate, but I've got things I'd rather keep private."

Nakahara had been purposefully silent before, but this time Goda could tell she was genuinely speechless as she picked the phone gingerly off the table. As well she should be, a high schooler letting someone else riffle through their phone was unheard of in this day and age. In other words a considerable act of trust on his part.

Understanding this Nakahara made quick work of locating and deleting the photo, not wanting to leave her actions up to interpretation. And just like that Goda's phone was returned and the photo was no more. She'd even removed it from the recently deleted, but left the other photos awaiting their faith in that folder alone. Among which was a picture he'd taken with several members of the basketball club back when he'd first joined at the beginning of the year.

Hoga-senpai watched the entire exchange with a glimmer in her eye and a smile on her face. How could she not when so many possibilities presented themselves before her.

"This could work..."
