Chapter 3:
The Cute Side of My Yandere Girlfriend
"Good morning, Minamoto-kun."
"Oh! Good morning, Tsukinaga-san."
On the way to the school, I meet with Tsukinaga-san.
"It's rare for you to come at this hour. Usually you come much more earlier."
"Uhm...Is it weird if I say I want to go to school with you?"
My steps stopped. Tsukinaga-san who was fidgeting after saying such an embarrassing line also stopped and turned around.
What the heck was that?! Is that kind of attack even allowed?
"Minamoto-kun?"
"Ah! Sorry. I was zoning out for a second."
I rushed after Tsukinaga-san then walked beside her. Together, we walked down the road to school.
It doesn't take long until we can see the school building. Time flies so fast when you're having fun. I wanted to take another detour but it just made us late, so I gave up.
After changing into indoor shoes, I walk Tsukinaga-san to her class. Because we were in different classes, we had to part ways.
"Well then, see you later, Minamoto-kun."
"See you later, Tsukinaga-san."
After waving back at Tsukinaga-san, I go to my class. Right after I parted with my soulmate, I got an attack from behind.
"Morning, Kenjiro!"
"Gah!"
My best friend, who I've known since junior high, hugs me from behind after running at high speed.
"Haruki... How many times do I have to tell you not to jump at me like that."
"Ahaha! Sorry sorry."
I scolded Haruki who doesn't look like feeling sorry at all. With laughter, Haruki's laugh to be precise, the two of us walked towards the classroom.
During lunch break, I have my sweet time with Tsukinaga-san as usual.
"Hey, Minamoto-kun. Who was that guy you were with this morning?"
"Hum?!"
Tsukinaga-san asked while I was eating. I hastily swallow the food in my mouth.
"You mean Haruki? What's with him?"
"You seem close to him."
"Hm... I dunno. But we've been together since middle school."
"Hm~"
Tsukinaga-san's strange behavior made me curious.
"Why?"
"It's nothing. What was his name again? His full name."
"Takanashi Haruki."
"Okay. Thanks."
She answered nonchalantly before taking another mouthful. While Tsukinaga-san is enjoying her meal, I'm still wondering. But when I realized what is going on, I wrack my brain to find a way to ward off that nightmare.
"Tsukinaga-san!"
"Hn?"
Tsukinaga-san glanced at me with chopsticks in her mouth when I suddenly called out to her.
Kuh! So cute!
"Even though Haruki has a slightly handsome face, he is not as good-looking as you think. He's lazy, often borrowing my notebook because he forgot to do his homework. Irresponsible, always skipping his class duty with club activities as reason. He is insensitive, eats a lot, damn popular guy who always turns down girls who confessed to him..."
Tsukinaga-san remained silent while I listed all the bad things about Haruki.
"My point is, he is good-for-nothing!"
"Uh-huh...."
Tsukinaga-san looked puzzled. I tried my best so she won't be attracted to him. I've been patient all this time when Haruki was always surrounded by lots of girls while no one even glanced my way. But, I'm not going to let my woman be stolen by him this time.
"Uhm... May I ask?"
"Go ahead."
"Why are you telling me this?"
Tsukinaga-san asked with a doubtful look in her eyes
Oh shit! Did I go too far? Does she see me as a bad guy who is badmouthing his friend now?
"N-Noting. Just stating facts."
I tried to stay calm but I was sweating profusely.
"Oh," she replied curtly before closing her lunch box and standing up.
"Let's get back to the class. Our break gonna over soon."
"O-Ok."
I immediately got up and followed Tsukinaga-san.
"Oh yeah, I won't be stopping by the library today, there is something I need to do."
It's rare for her to have some business after school. But I don't want to be an overprotective boyfriend so I won't be questioning her.
"Got it."
Without something to look forward to after school, classes seem even more boring than usual and fly by just like that.
The next morning.
"Eh... Takanashi-kun won't attend today school. His parents said he was injured . I don't know if it was some kind of prank or what, but someone did put nails in his shoes yesterday."
The whole class gasped at the homeroom teacher's astonishing announcement.
"Before the school makes any move, I want to resolve this matter internally. Even if I say that, I'm sure no one will confess even if I ask who the culprit is now. Therefore, if any of you do, I hope you contact me. I won't blame you. Instead, I want to know your reasons so I can protect you when the Takanashi family demands justice. I look forward to all of your cooperation. I want this class to be cohesive. If there's a problem, we solve it together. Or if you know who did it, you can contact me. Of course, it needs to be accompanied by evidence so that it doesn't become an empty slander."
The whole class was silenced by the heavy atmosphere. When there is nothing else to discuss, the homeroom teacher ended the homeroom session this morning.
When the whole class broke with chatters, I remained silent. I still can't believe what I just heard. I just had a happy chat with him yesterday and suddenly something like that happened to him. All of this feels unreal.
As I contemplated, my eyes opened wide when I remembered something terrible.
No no no no no no! There's no way it's her.
My memory plays back to the time I just parted ways with Tsukinaga-san yesterday morning. When I was looking at Haruki who was hugging me, I caught sight of Tsukinaga-san who was giving a wrathful look to me. Instead of me, her gaze fixed on someone besides me, that is Haruki. I don't know what happened between them, but she looked like despise him very much.
At first, I didn't want to think too much about it. Because there is no way Tsukinaga-san throws such evil eyes at someone. I thought that I was mistaken and ignored it. But if it's true that she resents Haruki, I need to do something about it.
During lunch break, I meet with Tsukinaga-san as usual. I hesitated about asking her, but after steeling my resolve, I opened my mouth.
"Tsukinaga-san!"
"What is it? Was the bento I made for you not enough?"
Tsukinaga-san tried to joke with a bit of sarcasm.
"Tsukinaga-san, I want to ask you questions and I want you to answer them honestly."
"What is this? Why suddenly become serious?"
Tsukinaga-san is still trying to act casual but changes her attitude after seeing that I'm not joking.
"Do you remember Haruki who we talked about yesterday?"
Tsukinaga-san nodded. After confirming it, I continued.
"Have you ever met him before?"
"No, I've never met him," she answered shaking her head.
"Why do you ask?"
"Today Haruki was absent from school. They said someone put nails in his shoes."
"Hm...."
Tsukinaga-san answered as if she didn't care. Her nonchalant response troubled me, whether she is the culprit or not.
"May I ask what business did you have yesterday?"
Was I too blunt?
My feelings are getting stirred up as time goes by. Neither her expression nor the look in her eyes changed. I can never guess what's on her mind.
"I understand where this conversation goes."
She put her lunch box before answering.
"What if I'm the one who put the nail in Takanashi-san's shoes? What would you do?"
I don't know how to respond. I was indeed the one who brought this up, but when it got real, I was completely lost.
"That's... I don't think you are the culprit."
I averted my eyes. I'm really pathetic. Even though I was the one who went around accusing her, I was also the one who ran away from the problem I created.
"Just as I thought, you don't know me after all."
"Eh?"
I raised my head at Tsukinaga-san's muttering.
"I'll return to the class first."
Tsukinaga-san immediately makes up all the cutlery.
"Wait, Tsukinaga-san!"
"Finish your food, I put a lot of work to make it."
She shot me down so I didn't go after her. Leaving me alone, I watch Tsukinaga-san's back getting smaller.
