Chapter 26:

Babysitter Mona pt 2.

Maid School

“Wake up Master! It is time for breakfast..”

“Ti… Ti-chan is that - you?”

“Please let me s..sleep…”

Mona closed her eyes and went to sleep again, she’d usually get up way later.

“Big cousin Mona, it’s me! Look”

A big sigh sounded through the room. Mona yawned and opened her eyes to see Lisa, who stood next to her bed. She was wearing her school uniform! The dress didn’t exactly fit her, it almost reached the ground.

“Look, I am a maid now!”

“No school uniforms during summer vacation please!”

“That reminds me of the homework I still got to do”

A shiver ran down Mona’s spine.

“Is this your school uniform? I thought this was some cosplay from some kind of manga”

Mona chuckled.

“It is, the manga is called Mona’s Adventures at Maid School”

“Wow that’s awesome, can I read it?”

“Just kidding Lisa, I actually go to a school where they teach you to be a maid. It was the only school I could get into with my amazing school results…”

Mona then mumbled.

“This is why your parents keep bugging you to do your summer homework…”

Lisa looked totally excited.

“Can I get to go there to school too?”

“Sure, but I have to warn you, there are a lot of freaks and weirdo’s around”

“Like me”

Mona said sarcastically.

But that made Lisa only more interested in Yamamoto Academy. Mona decides to leave the bed and go downstairs, to avoid corrupting her mind even more.

Breakfast

When Mona entered the dining room, Mom and Saya were already sitting around the table. Lisa came in from the kitchen holding a pan of fried rice.

“What an honor to bring you your breakfast, masters!”

Saya chuckled.

“Mona is that your school uniform - I never saw you wear it in person”

“For good reason…”

“I still can’t believe a total slob like you goes to a school - to become a maid”

“How ironic”

Mona sighed.

“It is what it is I guess”

“Mmm… your rice is delicious Lisa, where did you learn to cook it like this?”

“My mom, of course!”

Lisa said with a lot of pride.

“Your mom surely is a good cook, we used to cook a lot together when we still lived at Grandma and Grandpa’s”

Mom laughed.

“Maybe you can teach Mona something about cooking…”

“I’d love to teach you big cousin Mona!”

“I think we talked enough about me..”

Meanwhile, Lisa was still standing beside the table.

“Is there anything I can help you with ladies?”

“Please come sit down sweety and help us finish the pan - maids need to eat too.”

Lisa sat down on a chair and exclaimed.

“Have a nice meal”

After which she started eating in a greedy way.

“You must have been starving, Lisa”

Mom said with a laugh.

“Huagho delcopah..”

None was able to understand her since her mouth was filled with rice.

“Alright, I have to head out”

Saya stood up from the table and brought her plate to the kitchen.

“Thank you for your cooking Lisa”

“Please keep an eye on Mona okay?”

She said to Lisa while winking at her sister.

Investigation

After breakfast, Mona and Lisa found themselves alone in the house again. That is when Lisa brought up their mysterious neighbor again.

“Mona, do you remember what happened last night?”

Mona rubbed her head.

“Something with Mr. Cat?”

“No silly, I was talking about the wizard!”

“Ahh..”

The memories slowly returned to Mona’s still-sleepy mind. That night they heard the neighbor weirdly yelling from the balcony. She promised they would investigate it.

“Let me come up with a plan, Lisa”

Mona looked at the backyard and saw an old soccer ball laying underneath a bush. She used to play soccer with her sisters and dad, at that one time he got a day off. She hadn’t seen him much since she came back from school to live at home again.

“Okay Lisa, do you like to play some soccer?”

“Sure do, big cousin Mona!”

The two of them went to the little patch of grass in the backyard. Mona grabbed the ball and yelled at Lisa.

“Try to block it okay?”

Lisa took a defensive stance in front of the fence while Mona took a run-up.

“Here it goes..”

Mona’s feet hit the ball - which flew right over the fence into the neighbor's garden.

“Mona! That was way too high, how could I block that with my tiny legs?”

But Mona seemed totally unfazed by it.

“Ah shit, seems like we have to climb over the fence to retrieve the ball..”

“What a pity…”

Mona puts her foot against the fence and then pulls herself up. She looks over the fence and sees the ball laying about 5 meters from the fence. Just as she wants to climb over to the other side, a big brown dog leaves the doghouse and starts barking at her.

“Woof! Woof!”

Mona has never seen such a big dog before, this must be a really special breed. Anyway, there was no way they were going to get the ball back - let alone get a good peak at the neighbor's property. Disappointed, Mona decides to climb down to her own backyard again.

“Did you see the ball, Mona?”

“Yeah I did, but I am not taking the risk of getting attacked by their bear - eh dog”

“We need to think of a way to distract it… it’s so - big”

Lisa seemed quite interested in the dog.

“Do you think this is the neighbor’s familiar? Have they summoned it?”

“I am not ruling anything out Lisa…”

The two of them sat down for a bit to think about the best solution.

“Big cousin Mona, what about the bones from yesterday's diner?”

“Couldn’t we distract the dog with those”

“Mmm.”

Mona rubbed her head.

“That might work Lisa”

Mona climbed on top of the fence again, while Lisa handed her the bones. When the dog came walking towards them again, Mona threw the bones toward him. The dog started wagging its tale and grabbed the bone.

“Good boy…. good boy”

Mona quietly said to him, as she climbed down the fence into the neighbor's yard.

She carefully walked past the dog and tried to get a glimpse of the neighbor's living room, through the window. She could see a big picture hanging on the wall. To Mona’s big surprise, it featured a big summoning circle.

“Is the neighbor truly - a magician?”

When Mona tried to get a better look, the neighbor's door flew open. A big elderly woman stood in the opening. She was wearing an apron and holding a big spoon.

She started talking to Mona in a language she couldn’t understand.

“Кто ты девушка? У меня остался суп, хочешь?”

Mona stuttered.

“I want to get the b..ball”

She quickly grabbed the ball and climbed over the fence.

Lisa, who witnessed everything from the top of the fence, quickly helped her back into her own garden.

“Was that the neighbor Mona? She was so scary!”

“I don’t think so, they looked a lot more slender”

“And what language was she talking? Is that wizard speak?”

“I don’t know Lisa.. that was quite - scary”

Mona told her cousin about the summoning circle she saw on the wall.

“I thought we were just playing around - but the neighbor may truly be a wizard, Lisa”

Lisa looked so excited.

“But what do we do Mona?”

“Well…”

Mona scratched her head. She had no idea.

“What about playing some games… we can think about it later”

Mona’s bedroom

Mona handed Lisa a controller.

“Here Lisa, would you like to race against me?”

She looked hesitant.

“Didn’t say big cousin Saya I couldn’t play games with you anymore?”

“Haha…”

That was my fault, that one game was meant for big cousins only. This game is a game we usually play at the dorms at my school.

Mona showed Lisa a colorful box of a kart-racing, featuring famous game characters.

“It sounds so cool living in dorms like that - but I am afraid I can’t do it”

“Why not Lisa?”

“I’d miss my Mom too much…”

“You get used to it - cleaning up your own mess”

Lisa shook her head.

“Don’t assume everyone is like you Mona, I am really good at cleaning myself”

Mona laughed.

“Well, in that case, we can make a deal. If you lose this game, just must help me clean my room.”

“What happens if I win?”

Mona grinned.

“That would of course never happen - but let's say you do - hypothetically - I’ll grant you a wish.”

Lisa thought about it a bit and then exclaimed.

“Deal!”

The two of them played together for about an hour.

“Yes!!!!”

“I won!”

Lisa was dancing around Mona’s room.

“I can’t believe it Lisa, how could you ever win from me - the greatest gamer in history!”

“Looks like a need to find me a new identity”

Mona looked at Lisa.

“What do you wish for Lisa?”

“Mmm… I tell you later Mona”

Bedtime

Just like the night before, Mona laid down a futon for Lisa to sleep on.

“Let’s hope for a peaceful night…”

Mona sat on the edge of her bed, petting Mr Cat.

“I am tired”

But unfortunately, it wasn’t long before the whiling started again. This time, accompanied by weird flashes.

“It looks like they are casting a spell, Mona!”

Mona could see weird-colored light flashes coming from the neighbor's window. She scratched her head. Just what could be going on? Even though this all started as a little adventure to keep her cousin busy, Mona also got curious about who or what was living next door. But that was something for tomorrow.
