Chapter 3:

Scene 3

A Heatwave on Satellite Street

After learning that the girl from the train station lives across the street from my sister’s house, I have now made it my new mission to try and talk to her and figure out why she makes writing easier when I am around her. Every day I sit outside to catch up with her, but I can’t get anywhere close to her due to her dad taking her into town or she has her two dogs walking with her. In both instances I either get chased away by the dogs or her dad murders me with his stare. I think it’s been a couple days since we had that tiny conversation on my sister’s porch, and it has been filed away with the train station conversation. At least I didn’t say anything weird this time, but I strangely wish we had another interaction like that day.

There was something about the way we bounced off each other and weaved together a story from nothing. It was almost like she was pulling the character out of me and showing me what pieces to put together to make the story continue.

While spending my days thinking about the angel that has sparked my creativity is fun; I also need to find other things to spark it, so I have recently started to go into town. The funny thing about the area my sister lives in is that it is on the edge of the city limits. It is a singular street that ends in a cul-de-sac or dead end. The street has an interesting name, it is called Satellite. I recall my sister telling me before I arrived that the show that was shot here was centered mostly on this street. The way the houses are surrounded by the forest and the amazing view of the night sky is probably why I would make a tv show here.

Anyway, I am currently in town, specifically the downtown area, with some friends. Yes, I can make friends and I knew them from a game we play online. Their names are Rin and Nate. They have said in past conversations that they have known each other since elementary school and have been best friends ever since.

“It’s still crazy that you are here Cairo! You have no idea how excited Rin was when he found out and told me. He was literally jumping around like he was the energizer bunny!” Nate laughed while Rin in embarrassment elbowed him hard to the side. Nate, being the tallest out of all of us, bends over a little from the blow to his side and still chuckles through the pain. Rin, the shortest out of us, swears he wasn’t acting like that, but I found that hard to believe.

We were all walking around with nothing to do and trying to stay cool in this intense June heat. Summer vacation was just starting to pick up and I was already over this heat. It got to the point where I had to ditch my shirt and tie it around my head to keep the sweat from going in my eyes. Rin looked unaffected and he was wearing cargo pants in this weather! Even though Nate and I were in shorts, we were barely making it.

“Hey, you guys want to stop by that snow cone stand and get something?”

“Cairo, that is a brilliant idea. That sounds good to you Rin?”

“It’s not even that hot, but if it will get you babies to pick up the pace, then yeah.”

Even though Rin said that he was the first one to order a snow cone and it was the biggest size they offered. Nate ordered something from the secret menu for the both of us, and we all found a shady spot under some trees that was thankfully blessed with a cool breeze. We sat down on the grass and talked about random stuff while we ate our snow cones.

All that nagging my sister did for me to get out of the house was worth it. Nate and Rin made everyday fun, and I couldn’t imagine being out here without them.

I began to think of the girl again and I was about to ask them if they knew her, but I was stopped by them shoving a phone in my face. “We use our words when we want to let somebody know about something.” I said with as much annoyance I could muster in this heat. I looked at the phone properly and I was shocked to see it was of the girl at the train station! The video shows the girl and in it she looks to be asking random people if they would like to be in her video. Some politely declined, others simply ignored her, and there were some who agreed but they clearly didn’t know what to do. The whole time the girl was narrating her experience and saying she was close to giving up.

Then the video goes dark and then it shows a train pulling up to the platform and the doors opening. There was music playing and there were effects added onto it to make it look more dramatic.

I almost chucked the phone, because I then saw myself as the doors open! My brain was trying to figure out how I didn’t notice someone recording me, but I remembered how abrupt the situation was and the numerous people that surrounded us as that whole situation unfolded. I could see Nate and Rin out of the corner of my eye giving me weird looks.

I had a sinking feeling of what it was for.

‘That is so unfair, and you know it. How can you put me in this situation and just melt my heart with that smile and little laugh.’

The laughter of my friends was overshadowed by the sound of the words I said echoing in my head. The two hyenas calmed down after a minute and they both asked me was the girl in the video was the one I was talking about, and I said yes.

“That makes so much sense now. Right, Rin?”

“Totally makes sense. Only that girl would pull a stunt like that and somehow make it look like the set of a movie.”

They were intentionally avoiding her name. I wanted to strangle them both, but before I could, we all heard something fast approaching us. The sound of grass crunching near me made my head turn and I nearly dropped my snow cone when I saw who it was. “This has got to be my luckiest day!” The excited but cool voice of the girl said as I immediately began to look around. I could feel the looks of all three of them looking at me, but I ignored it. I didn’t feel any murderous gaze and I also didn’t see the hounds of hell charging at me from any direction I looked in. Feeling relieved, I turn back to the girl, and I find her just staring at me. I glanced behind her, and I saw both Nate and Rin trying to get my attention.

They were both frantically pointing at their heads and at their chests. I didn’t figure out what they meant but the girl’s voice snapped me back into reality.

“Wow. Do you play sports or something? Maybe you work out a lot because, just, wow is all I can say.”

It finally dawned on me what my friends were trying to do, and I sheepishly smiled at the girl before putting my shirt back on. The brief look of disappointment on her face oddly made me feel happy but the embarrassment of just staring at her with my shirt off overshadowed it.

I asked her what she meant by saying it was her luckiest day and she quickly shoved her phone into my face. I really wondered if almost cracking someone’s skull open with your phone was a greeting in this town. I pushed the device away and I was shocked to see that it was the same video my friends had shown me.

“This video blew up immediately the second I uploaded it to all my social media! I didn’t know you could get so many likes and views that quickly before this!”

The excited look on her face made me unconsciously smile, but I was confused as to why she was showing me this. My face must have given me away because the girl quickly grabbed my hands like she did on the train station platform. My heart jumps into my throat and she stares into my eyes. Those emerald gems stared into my soul, and I was immediately under her spell.

“I know this is sudden, but I need you! You are the guy I have been dreaming of, so please perform with me again!”

Her words echoed in my head, and I could only utter one word.

“What?”
