Chapter 10:

First afternoon of becoming jobless

Goodbye, Goodnight

As I got home from a couple of drinks at the bar I frequent, at my front door is the same girl I met up with this morning who is now sulking as if she was waiting there.

"Oh, good afternoon," I casually told her as I put my key in the keyhole of my apartment.

"Oh, you just got home?" she asked as she lift her head to look my way.

"Yeah, and how about you? What are you doing in front of someone else's apartment on this hot afternoon?" I began my interrogation of her.

She stood up from where she was and cut me off as I attempt to make my way home.

"I'm here to apologize about this morning. I was given such short notice last night and I have little to no sleep after I got home last night. That, and the way you addressed me this morning definitely did it for me to blow my fuse." she 'apologized' as she justifies her actions this morning.

"Oh, don't worry about that. No one will be happy to see my face in the morning, so I get you." I said scoffingly.

"I wouldn't say so as I could not recognize you this morning. You today and you from last night clearly have stark differences from each other if I would be perfectly frank with you," she responded.

"So, can I come in?" she added.

After hearing her question, I paused. I was hesitant to say yes and I am not sure if it's alright for me to have her in. Despite it all, before I even reach a conclusion, she welcomes herself into my apartment.

"Come on, it's not like this is the first time I came in here, remember? You're the first one to bring me in here, you scoundrel." she playfully teases me.

sighs.

"Well, I don't have any sort of comeback to that." lost for words, I just agreed to what she just said.

As soon as we set foot in my apartment, she begins scanning in every nook and cranny inside just like how a mother acts whenever she comes into his son's room after living separately from them.

"Hmm, your apartment feels a bit empty, don't you think?" she begins giving comments about my humble apartment.

"I mean, I am mostly at my work anyway so buying a lot of stuff to put in here would be too much work for me." I gave my excuse for her criticism.

I mean, that is a good excuse in itself until last night because as of today, I am officially a jobless man in his mid-30s. "Life is cruel" as other calls it.

"Anyways, about what I said this morning about this marriage arrangement..."

"You don't mean it, do you?" she cuts me off as I brought up the topic and finished my sentence for me.

"Yeah, that's right." I agreed with her about my intention about this whole marriage fiasco we were thrown into.

"I see," she responded with a soft voice that it is barely audible.

"What a way to kill the mood, aren't you?" she playfully bumped me in my shoulders as she raised her voice along.

Is it just me or was she somewhat disappointed hearing my response to her question? I should not get my hopes up again, I mean we barely knew each other anyway.

"By the way, you already know my name but I wasn't able to get yours. Do you think it's about time that you tell me your name?" I asked her out of the blue.

"That's a secret! Don't you think it's a lot better for me to be some sort of a mysterious woman that when you look back on your life once you grew older, you'll wonder what my name could be?" she added to her teasing.

"Yeah, right. So, what's your name?" I insisted on knowing her name than playing along with her.

"Cheapskate." she pouted as I did not play along with her little skit.

"I was planning to tell you if you played along but now I think I will not tell you about it," she added.

As she makes her way to where my bed and where she was last night, I attempt to start a small talk with her.

"So, do you want to eat something? Not that I have much with me right now aside from a couple of cans of beer." I asked her.

No response.

As I was curious, I peeked at my room and saw her standing still. Most likely shocked by what she saw more than anything.

"What is this?" she asked me as she lifts a handful of heavy-duty rope in her hand.

"Oh, that," I answered briefly as I was lost for words.

"Don't tell me this is for something that I am thinking right now?" she asked me as her voice slightly breaks for a second.

"If you're thinking what I am thinking, then yes," I answered with the same level of vagueness as her question.

Yes, it's true. When I went home last night, I was planning to end my life here and then until I found her passed out, that's what.

"You know that you should not think of something like that, right? Don't throw away your life like it was nothing, you idiot!" she began throwing a fit as she grabs my wrist with a firm grip on it.

"I mean, that's not for you to decide, right?" I tried to reason with her.

"So you're just going to be a coward and run away from all of your problems by cutting off your life?!" she argues.

What's with her all of a sudden? Earlier, she teases me a lot and now, she's throwing a fit after finding out that I was planning to end my life last night. Why is she acting as if she knows who I am and why is she getting angry for my sake? A lot of questions starts to flow in my mind and I couldn't keep them from overflowing in it.

"Who are you to question my decisions in the first place? First and foremost, both of us are strangers to one another so I can't have you talking to me as if you know who I am in the first place." I argued back.

My response to her seems to bring her back to her senses.

"Oh yeah, we just met last night after all. Sorry about that, but I think I should be going now as I seem to overstay my welcome." she excuses herself as she goes out of my apartment after our small argument.

What's with her getting angry all of a sudden? Just why? Why did you look so sad as if you were about to cry when you walked out of here? Who the hell are you in the first place?
