Chapter 15:

Water city part 2

Your Wish

Gorge and Periphirilia now stand before the building's exterior, admiring the impressive structure.

I wonder who built this. Are they still around here? Gorge thinks as he's looking around.

"Found the door," announces Periphirilia.

They pause briefly and take a long, hard look at the massive, rusted door.

"Are you sure you want to go in there?"

"I don't know; this could be pretty dangerous." Gorge hesitates
"What the hell, sure, let's go in; what's the worst that could happen anyway? We go in and find a bunch of old bones and stuff. I mean, yeah, that's scary, but not that dangerous."

"Well, alright then, let's open the door."

They push the door together with all their might, but it won't budge.

Gorge thinks a bit. "I think we are going to have to break it down."

"How? We have no tools."

"Let's grab some of the scrap metal that's lying on the side and hit the door with it."

It wouldn't hurt to try..." Reluctantly agrees Periphirilia

They begin banging on the door. They start out slowly before steadily picking up speed and strength until they are running out of breath.

Gorge and Periphirilia are huffing and exhausted as they lay on the ground.

"It didn't even budge," Grumbles Gorge.

"We did leave some scratches. Periphirilia suddenly starts laughing. "I think I'm a genius."

Gorge is all confused. "What ?"

"Let's use the rope on the ship to tie the door to the ship and break it that way."

"Wow, since when did you turn this crazy? Did you get heatstroke or something?"

"Hey, you are the one who wanted to get in no matter what." Shouts back, Periphirilia

"Fine, let's do it. Don't blame me if something happens to the ship, though; it's all on you."

I'll tie the rope to the door, so return to the ship and throw it to me.

"Aye, aye, captain," Gorge salutes and returns to the ship.

He throws the rope. Periphirilia catches it.

"Nice catch!"

"Good throw!"

They shout simultaneously. And now they are staring at the ground awkwardly.

Periphirilia ties the rope.

"All done on my end. You can move the ship now!"

"Roger that, sir captain, moving the ship now."

Gorge begins to steer the ship off position. Loud shrieks emanate from the ship's port and the door.

"Hey, master captain, I think the ship is going to break!"

"What ?!'"

They can no longer hear one another because of how loud the creaking has gotten. Something suddenly pops. The ship stumbles back a little bit. They can now clearly see that the door has vanished. A large, pitch-dark opening confronts them.

"That actually looks kind of scary."

"Hey, the ship is broken!" Gorge shouts as he's looking at the piece of broken port. "I told you that this would happen."

"Now, let's not get all dramatic. Did you forget why we did it in the first place? Look, the door is gone; we can explore now."

"I guess you are right. Let's go."

Gorge and Periphirilia are pacing nervously in front of the dark opening.

"Hey, what are you waiting for? Let's go." Says Periphirilia

"You first?"

"Hey, give me your hand."

"Why ?"

"Let's go at the same time."

Together, holding hands, they descend into the unknown depths.

It's not that bad. Gorge thinks as they are walking in complete darkness.

"Ahhhh!" Gorge shouts as he trips on something.

A sudden, weirdly loud automated noise says something. The ceiling begins to glow faintly.

"What's going on?" asks Gorge.

"Maybe you tripped on the light switch or something; I dunno."

They look down and see Gorge lying on a large bone.

"Ahhhhh! I told you that this would happen if we went in!"

"Yes, you did, and yet you still insisted that we go in no matter what. In any case, we are already deep inside. Might as well explore. It would be kind of stupid to turn back now, right ?"

"Yeah, you are right. Sorry, I just got a bit scared. Who do you think that bone belongs to? Look how huge it is."

They stare at the bone, which is almost the same size as the Gorge.

"I think that looks like a misshaped femur and a human one at that. It's really weird. Let's keep looking for more stuff."

"Look, there are doors on the side of the walls!"

"You are right, but I see no door handles. How do we open them?''

Gorge walks near the door and pushes it; the door opens.

"It's full of boxes! Let's open them."

They proceed to open the boxes, only to find strange packages.

"I think these are some kinds of foods."

"Can we eat them?"

"Long-expired foods; look, some of the plastic wraps have already started disintegrating." It means these might be hundreds of thousands of years old, if not older. Which should not be possible."

"What does that mean?"

"It means that we go explore further in."

After leaving the room, Gorge and Periphirilia proceed down the dark hallway under a blinking light.

"Are those footprints?" Gorge points to the dust on the floor.

Periphirilia looks closely.

"I think so, but these look very weird; I have never seen anything like them before."

"Oh, no, do you think whoever walked here is still around somewhere?"

"I doubt it. These are very old; what once walked here is long dead by now."

"The bone! Do you think that's from the same person who once walked here?"

"What do you mean by person? There is no reason why these things would be humans; probably some new animal species broke into an abandoned building."

"I don't know. Don't you think that these things look human?"

...

The long and deafening silence that followed made Gorge and Periphirilia very uncomfortable.

"You know, we could just head back already. We saw nothing, and I don't think that there is anything more to find in this place. You know everything is old here, so there's nothing we can use anyway."

"What's wrong? Are you scared already? What about the adventure you talk about all the time? I mean, even if we assume that what was here was some freak, it is most definitely dead by now, so there is nothing to worry about here. We might discover something very useful here."

"I don't know; I can't help but feel uneasy. I get the feeling that there is something very wrong here."

"So, do we give up and go back?"

"Yeah..." Gorge looks down.

"What if the golden carp is here?"

"Why would it be here?" Gorge gradually becomes more lively.

"Well, think about it. Wouldn't a place like this be somewhere where we would expect it to hide? You don't think we will find it outside, sitting in the open. I mean, you were the one who thought that we would find it here when we initially believed this to be a mountain.."

"Let's go!" We will find the carp regales of where it hides!" Gorge is motivated more than ever before. The thought of finally finding the golden carp made him forget all his fears.

Periphirilia smiles and grabs his hand.

"Let's go; together, we have nothing to fear."

"Yeah"

Gorge returns her smile, and the two of them move ahead. It becomes darker the further they venture in.

"It seems that the lighting doesn't work very well further in here," Concernedly says Gorge.

"Yeah, we are going into complete darkness soon. Are you ready?"

Gorge smiles anxiously and says, Yeah."

They then enter total darkness.
