Chapter 18:

The Three of Us

Staying by a Campsite

"Hey!" Yujiro's voice rings out, swift and vibrant, as he enfolds his arms around me and Ayumi. His jovial grin dances from me to Ayumi, a spark of playful energy. "Gotcha!"

"I don’t think we're running away," I remark, my words lacing the crisp air with a touch of amusement.

"Just not yet! I’m sure if I had waited another two seconds, you two would have run off!" Yujiro quips, his voice carrying a hint of playful mischief. As his grin paints a mischievous expression, I notice Mr. Izumiya approaching us.

"So it’s only the three of you out of your usual six?" He inquires. I offer a nod, acknowledging his observation.

"Aika’s busy with studying," I explain. "Kaito and Sakura prefer staying home. I believe it’s for the best, though; they might catch a cold out here."

"I see," he responds, his voice carrying an air of understanding. His gaze lifts to the sky, his thoughts trailing the billowing clouds. "Well, it will get cold outside tonight. Weather forecasts even mentioned a possible rain. Let's hope it doesn't escalate into a snowfall or a thunderstorm." A soft chuckle follows his words, a sprinkle of humor under the vast sky.

Yujiro eases his embrace around me and Ayumi, stretching his legs with a burst of eagerness. "Alright then!" He exclaims, his excitement palpable. "Let’s get going before the sky decides to pour down on us!"

Mr. Izumiya gives an agreeable nod, endorsing Yujiro's enthusiasm. "All right, everyone!" he calls out to the group, his voice carrying through the crisp air. "We’re setting course for Sekai’s peak!"

The next two hours sweep us up in a rhythm of ascent. This journey uphill doesn't match the challenging endeavor of our first trip, mercifully free of treacherous loose rocks or steep descents. These conditions not only minimize the risk of accidents but also silence any potential complaints from our resident joker, Yujiro.

"My, I can’t believe how chilly the weather is here!" Yujiro exclaims, his tone a mix of astonishment and good-natured complaint. He pulls his jacket closer, as if seeking refuge from the invading coolness. "It’s so chilly."

"I think it’s rather nice," Ayumi muses, her words floating on a serene smile.

"I might opt to skip tonight’s stargazing session," Yujiro mutters with an involuntary shiver. His voice is tinged with playful reluctance.

Amidst their exchange, my attention is drawn to the leaves in a delicate transition, poised on the brink of their descent. Most of them have already embarked on their journey downward, and their rustling underfoot creates a soothing symphony as we tread onward.

"Katomi still retains the essence of fall," I remark, captivated by the natural transformation around us.

"It’s a picturesque sight, isn't it?" Ayumi replies, her eyes alight with appreciation. I return her smile and offer an acknowledging nod. Suddenly, Ayumi’s voice rings out, a burst of enthusiasm that calls us to attention. My steps falter, and I glance in the direction of her excitement as she approaches a slender tree. "Look up!" she exclaims, her hands gently cradling the tree's bark.

Both Yujiro and I lift our gazes in unison, our eyes greeted by an enchanting shower of falling leaves. Yujiro's reflexive startle contrasts with my instinctive shielding from the cascading foliage. Observing Ayumi's act of shaking the tree, I emit a disapproving sigh, although my lips betray a faint, amused smile.

As the cascade subsides, a symphony of Ayumi's laughter fills the air. I release my sigh, replaced by a genuine chuckle. Yujiro's reaction is a stark contrast, seemingly less amused by the playful spectacle.

"Geez," he begins, his voice carrying a mock grumble. "You two truly can't resist the urge to play pranks."

"Come on, Yujiro!" Ayumi protests, her laughter still lingering in the air. "It was all in good fun!"

"Fun for you two," he retorts, his playful demeanor momentarily replaced by a hint of frustration. With a bemused shake of my head, I resume my steps, continuing along the path that unfolds before us. Ayumi returns to my side, our shared confusion reflecting in our exchanged glances.

"What's gotten into him?" I whisper to Ayumi.

She offers a nonchalant shrug, her own bewilderment mirrored in her gaze. "No idea. Has he ever acted this way before?"

"Not that I recall." Suddenly, Yujiro's voice echoes through the air again, announcing his approach. We pivot, surprised by his sprint towards us, his impulsive leap into the pile of leaves that Ayumi had conjured.

Amidst our shared laughter, Yujiro sprawls within the leafy embrace, his arms outstretched in a gesture of playful triumph. "Just messing with ya!" he declares, his grin radiant. As I navigate the unusual emotional tide, my eyes shift to Ayumi, hoping to uncover a hint of understanding in her gaze. Yet, like me, she seems to be swept away in the complexity of the moment.

"Let's continue," I murmur to her, my voice a soft reassurance.

"Yes, please." Her reply is a mere whisper, laden with a blend of relief and intrigue. As Yujiro continues to frolic within the leaves, Ayumi and I slip away in hushed steps, hoping to distance ourselves from the peculiarity that has briefly enveloped our companion.

"Hey! Are you abandoning me already?" Yujiro's voice rings out in protest, echoing through the air. Ignoring his outcry, Ayumi and I press forward.

"Guys, I know you're just retaliating for my little leaf escapade," he calls out, his voice a blend of amusement and bafflement. Yet, Ayumi and I maintain our silence, our steps leading us further up the trail. Yujiro's confusion mirrors our own, his voice trailing off into the distance as we journey on.

...

...

After several hours of steady ascent, our destination finally emerges on the horizon, a culmination of our efforts.

"Finally!" Yujiro's jubilant exclamation fills the air, reverberating with a sense of accomplishment. Ayumi takes a seat on a nearby log, while I cast my gaze across the breathtaking vista that stretches before us. The allure of the landscape is undeniable, even though the frigid temperature casts an undeniable chill in the air.

"The cold will only intensify as night descends," I muse aloud, my observations a reflection of the environment.

"I've come prepared with two blankets, just in case!" Yujiro proclaims, his grin undaunted by the impending chill. I shift my focus to Ayumi.

"And you?" I inquire.

"My jacket should suffice," she responds, her tone carrying a note of assurance. "At the moment, I'm comfortably warm."

I nod, my attention momentarily drawn to our surroundings. The campsite comes alive with a flurry of activity, as fellow travelers set up their tents and prepare for the night ahead. Together, Yujiro, Ayumi, and I locate an open expanse, its even ground offering ample room for our tents. The grass beneath promises a modicum of comfort in the absence of proper bedding.

We position our tents in a triangular arrangement, their proximity forming a small, intimate enclave. In short order, I complete my setup, finishing just ahead of Yujiro and Ayumi. A gentle breeze courses through the atmosphere, its cool touch a prelude to the impending night. The campfire nearby flickers, its warmth waning with each passing moment.

Shivering slightly, I stand by my tent, tugging my jacket tighter around me. It's then that I sense a soft, velvety fabric being draped around my neck. My eyes flutter open, met with the sight of Ayumi's scarf, a symbol of warmth and camaraderie.

"You seemed concerned about our warmth, yet you're the one standing here, freezing," Ayumi jests, her laughter a musical note amidst the chill.

"I-it’s just a s-some w-wind," I stammer, my words revealing the truth behind my façade. The chill of the breeze has taken its toll on me, a truth Ayumi clearly discerns.

Her laughter continues, gentle and sincere, as she steps away, her cheeks flushed with a touch of cold. I find myself blushing, caught in a moment that surpasses the chilly air's impact. I pray she attributes my reddened cheeks to the cold.

"You can't afford to catch a cold," Ayumi teases, her smile bright and affectionate. "Who would take care of you then?"

"Yeah, r-right," I respond, my words a blend of affirmation and faint unease.

Yujiro interjects once again, this time playfully steering the conversation. His gaze shifts between Ayumi and me, his words woven with playful insinuation. "Don't worry, we can always find someone to look after Haruki!" His voice carries a jovial tone, the camaraderie of our trio palpable. Yujiro's attention shifts, his gaze pivoting from me to Ayumi.

"First," I interject, my voice finding its place within the conversation, "I’m sure Sakura and Kaito are more than equipped to manage his well-being." I offer a thoughtful nod toward Ayumi. "And Aika’s natural nurturing instinct makes her quite capable of taking on a motherly role."

Yujiro's grin resurfaces as he redirects his focus back to me. "You guys were akin to a close-knit family, weren't you, Haruki?" His question lingers, leaving a trace of curiosity in its wake.

Amid the pause that follows, my thoughts assemble like pieces of a puzzle, aligning with the truth in Yujiro's words. He's struck an unusual chord, one that resonates in an unfamiliar way.

"I suppose there's some truth to that," I admit, my hand instinctively finding refuge at the back of my head.

I cast a sidelong glance at Ayumi, her demeanor a mix of contemplation and something subtler—a hint of unease, perhaps. Her barely noticeable act of biting her lip carries a weight that only the keenest observers, like myself, might decipher. It's an action loaded with meaning, yet its significance remains tantalizingly veiled.

Why does Ayumi's reaction bear a hint of fragility? Beneath the surface of our camaraderie, a complex network of emotions seems to simmer, waiting to surface.
