Chapter 1:

Adagio

March of the Desperate World

Going down the road, I was checking my surroundings to try and find something unusual, before finally realizing that I’m the only outstanding thing in this place. I haven’t changed at all since I got murdered on my own doorstep.
I was wearing a dark brown goat leather jacket, which would probably raise some suspicions, if I was seen in public.
Next, my eyes fell on jeans: these can raise even more questions. Probably have to find a more authentic replacement.
Sneakers... Here they will definitely arouse suspicion…
Then it occured to me, that actually I have more important things to worry about. Besides, I don’t even know if the habitants of this world are even human. Let’s see, what important stuff do I have on me.
The first thing that came to hand and most important thing – my phone. Too bad, it is only 57 percents. Probably will work for half a day. I remembered that when I came back home from the university, I was so exhausted that I’ve completely forgotten to charge my phone, otherwise it would have been fully charged.
The second thing was a flashlight. I took it purely formally, but now it can be very useful to me. In a pinch, I can sell it, like a smartphone.
I rummaged through my pockets and pulled out a half-eaten packet of cookies. Probably was lying around for quite a while. But they don’t look spoiled and they don’t taste half-bad, now at least I won't starve to death.
Meanwhile, I was still walking along the road towards those same mountains, but so far there was not a single settlement on my way. However, I noticed that some of the fields I was passing had already harvested wheat.
Suddenly, I saw a signpost. When I came a little closer to it, I saw some symbols, obviously unknown to me. But I could clearly understand the number "5". Perhaps the settlement is 5... miles... kilometers... inches away?
And after 10 minutes of walking from that signpost (in total I walked for about an hour), I noticed a rather large village. Maybe even a small town. Small houses began to appear already along the edges of the road. A wagon drove past me, which was being driven either by a mule or something similar to a dragon. Accordingly, the first people I met began to appear. In terms of clothing, they looked a little better than the medieval peasants in my opinion. And now I'm in the town itself.
Going through the gates, I thought I hallucinated. I could understand what people were saying, however they weren’t speaking japanese, nor were they speaking. Interestingly, it turns out that after death I got the opportunity to understand the language of this world (or country) as my own. But, despite this, I cannot read signs and inscriptions in this language. It seemed very strange.
And if I talk to the locals, will they understand me or not? I think I have yet to find out.
Meanwhile, I had already reached the central part of the town. There were more people here than on the outskirts. By the way, in addition to ordinary people, people who looked like elves sometimes passed.
In general, the situation developed, as if something was to come here. I decided to eavesdrop on conversations of the locals to understand what was going on. However, it was very difficult to understand which of the conversations related to more global situations than their personal ones. But nevertheless, I heard some information that clarified the situation a little.
- "Who knew that Her Highness would still come here for negotiations. "
* * *
- " They say Lady Radulescu wants to renegotiate the treaty between humans and elves. "
* * *
- " Lady Radulescu is once again trying to interact with Her Highness with soft power. She will once again demonstrate iron conservatism regarding their fate. "
* * *
Who is Lady Radulescu?
One thing was obvious: she’s some kind of important person, maybe an ambassador, maybe someone else. I think I have yet to find out
I don't even know what else to do. Maybe you should try to sell a flashlight or a phone. The phone will quickly run out of power, and the flashlight can be used for several weeks. The choice is obvious.

I decided to give it a try and went looking for a place labeled "market". As far as I know, it was in such places that all sorts of buying and selling took place in the past. Even before the invention of the Internet. Baskets were not virtual and not metal, but wicker, they were the personal property of a person and they had to be bought separately from the corresponding master.
However, the following happened.
In search of a market, I went to the central square of the town, where there was a platform. Some guardsmen stood around him, probably as a replacement for the modern police. People were already gathering around. At first there were about twenty people, after a while there were even more of them, and soon there were so many of them that it was overcrowded. Everyone was waiting for something. I was lucky to be in the front rows, because I came quite early.
Soon two heralds came on horseback out of nowhere and started shouting.
"Residents of Budrak and guests of the city! Her Highness, 49th Empress Catherine X arrives here to meet with the representative of the elves in order to revise the terms of the agreement concluded by the will of the 25th emperor, Vlad III the Conqueror”.
After a few seconds, two other heralds , who were also on horseback, but from the opposite side, also started shouting.
"The 4th patroness of the elves, Mrs. Maria Radulescu, arrives at this square to meet with her majesty!"
After these announcements, they rode away in different directions, and 2 beautiful carriages entered the square. After a while, two ladies came out of them.
I took a quick look at their clothes. The Empress was rather motley. Her robe was red, but her partlet, dress, and skirt were white and blue. Her hair was blonde. Madame Radulescu wore a white and purple dress with a long hem. Her hair was light mauve.
Mrs. Radlescu curtsied, showing respect for the Empress. Then she began to speak.
"I am grateful that you agreed to negotiate, Your Highness. If you please, we would begin to discuss the terms."
"Mrs. Radulescu, it was not at all difficult for me to accept your invitation to negotiate. Let's get started."
The crowd began to whisper. Everyone was waiting for what the 4th patroness of the elves, Maria Radulescu, would say.
And at that moment she looked at the Empress and said.
"Your Highness, the first paragraph of the new treaty, I consider the autonomy of the kingdom of Transelvia!"
