Chapter 13:

Chapter Thirteen

The Foreign Yakuza

He asked worriedly, “Has he a serious problem?” The doctor looked at the photos and said with a sigh, “Fortunately, there is no blood clot in his skull, but he has a little crack, his right forearm is broken, and his body is full of bruises. However, fortunately, his vital organs are not damaged.” Then he looked suspiciously at the Japanese boy and added, “Are you related to him?” Akira paused and said, “I'm his friend.”

- Does he have family or close relatives in Japan?

- As far as I know, no; he is a student.

The doctor nodded and said, “Then take more care of him; you can inform the university where he studies or the embassy of his country to tell his relatives. If he had been hit a little more, he might have been brain dead. Currently, his hand is in a cast, and his injuries have been treated and he is in the intensive care unit. There is no need for you to be here at the moment; leave a contact number at the nursing station, and we will call you when he regains consciousness and is transferred to the ward.”

Akira exited the room after thanking the doctor. He stepped behind the ICU's glass and glanced at his friend, who was lying on the bed. How could he repay him? He had involved himself in a matter that had nothing to do with him at all, and because of Akira, he was deeply hurt.

He lowered his head and said in a spiteful voice, “Why do you always get into trouble because of me?” At the same time, someone said, “Oh, thank God, you're fine.” It was Mikitani, who was coming towards him with Tajima. The man put his hands on his shoulder and said, “Didn't you get a serious injury?”

Akira shook his head in denial, and Tajima asked, “The police say that someone helped you; was it one of our own men?” The boy shook his head again, tilted it, and looked at his friend through the glass. The two men followed his gaze. Mikitani sighed and said, “Is he the foreigner you mentioned?” His answer was just a nod of approval.

The man took his hands off his shoulder and said, “Don't worry about the police; Tajima is messing with them.” Tajima confirmed, “That's right, Shinka, I'll sort it out myself.” Then Mikitani continued, “Did you know who they were?”

Akira sighed as he looked at his friend's damaged body from behind the glass. “I've never seen them before, but they called me the dog of Yonkiku. They were probably from the Nakayama group. Their leader was a four-shouldered man with a triangular chin beard, gray hair, and a gold chain necklace.”

Mikitani closed his eyes for a moment, then sighed and said, “Yabuki, the bastard who holds the post of Kyoda of the Nakayama Group in Shinjuku.” Akira turned his head and glared at him, his eyes shining. Mikitani frowned. “Don't even think about it, Shinka! There is no way you're allowed to mess with them; let me and the boss handle this.”

Akira suddenly lost his control and said in a loud voice, “You said the same thing last time! If you had let us attack them at the time, it wouldn't be like this!” Tajima immediately put himself between them and said, “Calm down, Shinka; this is the hospital. Trust Mikitani-san.” Akira glared at them for a moment, then sighed and turned his head towards the ICU window.

Mikitani said in a soothing tone, “Don't worry, my friend, we will cover all the hospital expenses ourselves. I hope he recovers soon.” He paused and added, “Please don't do anything rash, Shinka; any ill-considered action may lead to more people getting hurt.” Then He nodded to Tajima and turned away from them.

Tajima turned to Akira and said, “I know your morals; I understand that now you want to find and kill them all. But please bear with me; don't let more people be like him.” Without looking at his face, the boy paused and nodded his head in approval. Tajima sighed and said, “I'm going to talk to the officers; you can go home; you're of no use here,” and walked towards the nursing station and the two police officers who were waiting.

For a brief moment, he stood behind the glass. He couldn't believe they were having fun in Sendai just this morning, as if it had been weeks. The foreign boy was now lying on the bed, an oxygen mask covering his bruised face. He went away from the glass and sat on one of the chairs on the opposite wall. His heart was heavy.

He knew Mikitani-san was correct; a premature move would have resulted in a major war and catastrophic damage to many people. On the other side, he was determined to track down Yabuki and smash all his bones! He would not have fallen into their trap if he had been more cautious. He leaned his head against the wall helplessly and said, “I'm sorry, David.”

***

He opened his eyes with a shake of his shoulder. He did not remember when he fell asleep. The nurse, who was a middle-aged woman, said, “Don't sleep here, my son; you will get sick. Are you waiting for someone?” Akira blinked slightly, sat up, and said, “What time is it?” The woman smiled and said, “About 7 a.m.”

The Japanese boy got up and went behind the glass, but was surprised to see that his friend's bed was empty. He asked the nurse worriedly, “Where is the boy who was on that bed?!” The nurse looked at the bed she was referring to and said, “Ah, the same foreign boy they brought last night? He regained consciousness an hour ago; he was taken to the general ward just ten minutes ago. Are you one of his companions?”

Akira ignored the woman's question and asked with a frown, “Which room?!” The nurse took a few steps away from him and said, “I-I think it's room 205.” Akira started walking as soon as he heard the number and found the room after a few minutes. The room featured four beds, but only two were occupied, one of which belonged to his friend.

David leaned on his pillow and looked out the window. He turned his head for a moment and noticed Akira in the doorway. He smiled brightly at him and asked him to come forward and shake his left hand. The Japanese boy was happy to see him awake and smiling. He felt that his whole body was trembling with relief, and with the slightest effort, his tears would also flow.

He took a big breath, paused, and went to his friend's bed, smiling and saying, “You're hurting a lot, Big Boy.” David responded with a smile: “I'm glad you're safe.” The Japanese boy was silent for a moment after his friend's response because he didn't know what to say. The foreign boy's head was wrapped, his right hand was glued, and his face was covered in minor wounds and bruises.

Akira lowered his head and said, “I'm sorry...” David said in surprise, “Why? You didn't do anything.” He raised his head and said angrily, “It's my fault that you got hurt like this. You got involved in my troubles and ...” The foreign boy raised his left hand and said, “You don't need to say anything; the important thing is that you are safe now,” and continued with a smile, “You see that I am alive.”

- You are alive, but they hurt you! I want to kill them all!

David sighed and said, “Please be quiet and keep your voice down; this is a hospital,” and continued seriously, “Whatever it was, it's over; don't say that again. If I ever find out you hurt someone, except in self-defense, I don't know you as my friend anymore.” Akira said in disbelief, “But... but they...”

- They were a bunch of animals. You should not be like them. Please, Akira, promise me right now that you won't do anything stupid and that you won't seek revenge.

The Japanese boy paused, unable to look into his serious eyes. Finally, he sighed and said, “Okay, okay, I give up. I won't do anything. Are you satisfied?” David smiled and said, “It's better now. Now you better go home and rest. The nurses are taking care of me. They said that if my condition remains stable until tomorrow, I will be discharged around noon and I can go home.”

- But maybe you need something; I'd rather be here.

- I don't need anything; don't worry. go rest If you really like, come tomorrow to help me at the time of discharge.

He paused and then said with a sigh, “Okay, so I'm going to take a shower and change my clothes. I'll come to see you again in the evening, and don't disagree, Big Boy.” As he walked to the door, he added, “I left my number at the nursing station; if you need anything, tell them to call me.” David smiled and said, “Go away, bye.” Akira also smiled and left the room.

As soon as the Japanese boy left, David, who had endured the pain in his hand and head until now, squeezed his eyes shut and rang the bedside bell. He knew that if he showed his pain in front of Akira, in addition to his discomfort, it would increase the fire of his anger and thirst for revenge. As he waited for the nurse, he said with pain under his lip, “I'm really glad you're safe, Akira.”

***

As he was holding the foreign boy's armpit, he brought him into the house and said, “Wait a minute, I'll take your shoes off.” David said with a smile, “Did I give birth? I just broke my arm. I can do it myself.” Akira said as he slowly took off the shoes, “The doctor said you shouldn't shake your head for a few days, so don't complain.”

They entered the room, and Akira placed the foreign boy on the bed and said, “Lie down here; do you want me to bring you something?” David smiled to his worried eyes and said, “Calm down, Akira. I'm fine. I can take care of myself.” He stepped back a little, leaning against the wall next to the bed, and added, “You don't need to worry so much. There's juice in the fridge; bring them over to drink together.” The Japanese boy nodded and a few moments later came back with a pitcher and two glasses, poured a glass for David, held it to him, and said, “Bring your head forward; I'll hold it for you to drink.”

The foreign boy paused, looked into his eyes, and said, “What's wrong, Akira? I wasn't hurt that badly; why are you treating me like a cripple? You're not your usual self?” The Japanese boy frowned and said with annoyance, “Is it bad that I came to take care of you?”

- No, but since you came looking for me in the morning, you are not like yourself. I'm not saying you're bad, but I feel like you're trying to compensate me; it makes me sad.

He said confusedly, “H-heh, you just imagined; don't get your hopes up; there's no such thing.” David sighed, grabbed the glass with his left hand, and drank it all in one go. Akira said in surprise, “Hoy! Calm down!” The foreign boy put the glass on the bed and said, “I want to go to the bathroom. You can go do your work; you don't need to be here.”

He wanted to get up when the Japanese boy grabbed his shoulders and said, “The doctor said the bandage on your head should not get wet.” David freed himself with a shake and answered, “I don't wash my head; I just want to wash my body.” He got up from the bed when Akira stood in front of him again and said, “But your hand is also plastered!”

- Ah! I'm not stupid! I tie nylon around it! I smell sweat and hospital! Go away!

Shocked by his anger, Akira moved away a little and lowered his head. David, who felt that he had overdone it, sighed and sadly said, “I'm sorry, I didn't mean to raise my voice.” Then he walked, entered the bathroom, and closed the door behind himself.

He was in pain; his head hurt badly, and he didn't want to show it in front of the Japanese boy. He took a deep breath and slowly took off his clothes with his healthy hand. He took a nylon from the corner of the bathroom and wrapped it around the plaster of his hand. He sat on a little, short plastic chair, grabbed the handheld shower, and drenched his body carefully.

Just as he was about to wash his body with soap, the bathroom door suddenly opened, and Akira entered wearing a t-shirt and shorts. David quickly covered himself as much as possible and said, “W-What are you doing?! I'm naked!”

-So what? Are you a girl?! Your hand does not reach your back; I came to wash your back.

- But-but...

Akira closed the bathroom door, knelt behind him, and said, “Don't object; I'm here already.” He took the soap from his hand and began to clean him carefully, without squeezing the bruises. Although seeing the bruises only made him more embarrassed, He was drowning in these thoughts when the foreign boy said in a quiet voice, “I'm sorry...”

Akira stopped and asked, “What for?” After a little pause, he replied, “You have been paying attention to me since yesterday; you even paid the hospital fees... but I didn't behave properly... I'm sorry...” The Japanese boy sighed again, started to clean him, and said, “You saved me, you fool; of course I have to take care of you.”

- But you don't owe me...

Akira stopped again and said, “I am. More than once, I've caused you trouble every time, but this time...this time was really bad.” He continued as he tried to control himself, “If something happened to you, I would never be able to forgive myself.” He should have said now that he doesn't want the foreign boy to leave him; he should have said how relaxing it is for him to be with him and that he feels good with him. He mustered up all his courage and said, “You know, David, I...” but his words were cut off by the foreign boy's head falling back and hitting him in the chest.

He worriedly looked at his pain-shriveled face and said, "Hey, what happened?! Are you okay?" David said in pain, "I have to take my medicine..." Akira quickly wiped the soap scum from his back and laid him on the bathroom floor with a towel under his head and on his lower body. He imminently went to his bag, came back with several packets of pills and a glass of water, and panicked, "W-which pill?!"

After a painful pause, David said, “Pink...” The Japanese boy quickly removed a pill from the package, knelt next to his head, raised his head slightly, put the pill in his mouth, and helped him drink water. Then he put his head back on the towel and stared at him worriedly. Akira asked slowly, “Do you want me to take you to the doctor? Or should I call an ambulance?” The foreign boy slowly rejected both offers with a movement of his healthy hand.

Akira patiently sat next to his friend, and after a few minutes that seemed like a lifetime, David opened his eyes a little and said, “I'm sorry... Please help me get back to bed...” The Japanese boy said worriedly, “Are you better? Are you sure you don't want a doctor?”

- I'm fine... but this painkiller is strong; I'm falling asleep little by little... I can't sleep on the bath floor... please....

- Okay, okay, don't say anything.

He tightened the towel around his lower body, grabbed his armpits, and helped him up. The foreign boy was completely powerless; Akira carried him to the bed with difficulty and placed him on it. From David's closet, he brought a t-shirt and underwear to put on him, but he had fallen asleep in the same towel. The Japanese boy sighed, pulled a blanket over him, and sat on the floor next to the bed.

Akira felt his eyes burning with tears. Why did this happen? First his family, now this boy. After years, he felt happiness, but now... he sighed and said, “Perhaps my aunt is right; I'm cursed to bring death to the people around me.” With a broken heart, he leaned on the bed, hugged his knees, and rested his head on them.

***

It had been two weeks since he was discharged from the hospital, and he had already removed the bandage from his head. During this period, he had gone to university three times and was thanking God that this did not happen during the academic year. The professor kindly tried to give him fewer subjects. It was almost time to leave when Professor Okada approached him and asked, “How is your hand, my son?”

He got up respectfully and said, “Thank you, Professor, it's fine. I will probably remove the plaster by the time the new semester starts, and I won't have any problems. I'm sorry for causing you trouble.” The old man smiled and said, “Don't say that; you did a good job even with this situation. I was also satisfied with the results of your presentation and attendance at the Sendai Conference, so don't worry.” Then he turned his back on him and, as he walked away, said, “Take care when you go home, David.” The foreign boy bowed in Japanese fashion and said, "Thank you; have a good night, Professor.”

As he was gathering his belongings, a voice asked, “Would you like help?” He turned his head and said, “Ah, Hi Tina,” then added, shyly, “If it's not rude, I'll be happy to accept your offer.” The girl laughed, came to him, and said, “It's not rude; in return, buy me a drink later when you're better.” David answered with a smile, “Sure.”

He gathered his belongings, positioned the table, and removed his white coat with Tina's assistance. “Finally, I don't understand what happened to you when you broke your arm; did you get into a fight?” the girl questioned as they went together to the university's front door. The foreign boy laughed nervously and said, “Oh no, just carelessness.” He was at a loss for words. In response to the same question posed by the professor and Yonas, he stated that he had fallen on the bathroom floor.

The girl shook her head regretfully and said, “You boys are always the same. I didn't trust Yonas when he stated, you tripped in the bathroom.” David said with a forced smile, “Oh, well, it could happen.” The girl shrugged and said, “Living alone has its disadvantages.” Then she asked curiously, “Has anyone helped you all this time?”

- One of my friends visits me sometimes.

- Wow, I didn't know that the mysterious boy at the college has such good friends.

Then she added with a special tone, “If you promise to come with me to Akihabara when you are well, I will come and visit you too, maybe even cook for you.” Then she winked at him with a mysterious smile. David smiled politely and said, “Thank you for your kindness, Tina; I will definitely keep it in mind.”

Meanwhile, they reached the main door of the university when suddenly the girl said, “Oh, here he is again. Wait, is he the friend you mentioned?” David looked across the street and saw Akira standing in the shade of a tree, waiting for him. He smiled and said, “Yes, he is.”

The girl raised her eyebrows and said, “With that yellow head, he looks more like a criminal than a friend who will take care of you.” Then she smiled mysteriously again and asked, “Tell me the truth, didn't you get involved in a crime and really fight that your arm is broken?” David gave a nervous laugh and quickly said, “Like I said, I tripped in the bathroom,” then added, “Thanks for helping me; I won't forget to buy you a drink later. See you, Tina.”

As he passed by the street, he looked at his friend. After that day, when he passed out in the bathroom, Akira's behavior changed. The next day, he dyed his hair again and became quiet and aggressive, but in spite of his cold behavior, he visited him twice a day and did shopping for him. Even in these three times that he had come to the university, when he wanted to come back, the Japanese boy was waiting for him at the gate.

David walked over to him and said with a smile, “I'm sorry if I'm late; have you been waiting here for a long time?” The Japanese boy ignored his question with a cold look and said, “Who was that girl? Did you get a girlfriend?”

- No, he was one of my acquaintances.

- Aha

After saying these short words, Akira put his hands in his pants pockets and walked towards the station. David, who was upset by his behavior, sighed and followed him. He felt that the boy was distancing himself from him and that he visited him only out of compulsion and a sense of indebtedness. He probably didn't like him. David didn't expect anything from Akira; it wasn't like he expected the Japanese boy to fall in love with him or do anything special for him in exchange for saving him. Perhaps he should have asked him not to trouble himself any longer and to refrain from visiting him.

He was in these thoughts when Akira's phone rang. They had almost reached the station when Akira said, “I have to go; can you come back by yourself?” David gave a sad smile and said, “I've always relied on myself. You don't need to worry about me; go get your work done. Bye,” he said, then walked past him and entered the station.

As he was sitting on the train, he remembered that he had run out of painkillers and needed to go to the pharmacy. Because there was no pharmacy near his house, he exited the train one station earlier than normal. The evening weather was hot but tolerable, and after preparing his medicines, he decided to walk the rest of the way.

While strolling, he noticed three men on the side of the street surrounding someone. He sighed and chose to ignore the situation. This type of harassment, particularly towards women, occurred in some settings, and he had previously been involved in such events.

As he tried to keep his distance from them, a voice suddenly said, “Ah, David-chan, are you here?” He turned his head in surprise and saw Azuma-san come out from among the three men. He took his arm and said in a special tone, “Why are you so late, dear?” and slowly winked at him.

David understood what he meant, so he tried to go along with his plan and said, “I'm sorry, something came up; are these gentlemen bothering you?” The three men looked at his big body and broken hand with surprise and a little fear. Then one of them said, “Let's go, guys; it looks like this beauty only sleeps with foreigners,” and turned their backs to them.

David, who was upset by their words, wanted to say something, but Azuma squeezed his arm and stopped him by moving his head. After the men were gone, the boy let go of his arm and said, “Poof, it's like you saved me. Thanks, David-chan.” The foreign boy sighed and said, “I'm sure you didn't need my help, Azuma-san. I'm not stupid; I'm sure you know how to defend yourself.”

The boy frowned and said, “You're supposed to call me Riki,” then he added with a sigh, “True, they wouldn't be my opponents, but I'd rather have it resolved without any trouble or conflict.” Then he smiled big and said, “This is the third time, see? It's almost as if fate wants to bring us together.”

David sighed and said, “I'm glad the problem is solved, so bye.” He gave a half bow and continued on his way. The boy approached him as he walked beside him and said, “Don't be so cold, David-chan. Why are you being so mean to me?” The foreign boy replied nonchalantly, “What should I do? I can understand that you enjoy teasing me and that you're following me just to annoy Akira, but it's a shame he's not here, so you can go.”

Azuma stopped and said, “You mean you hate me that much?” David stopped, turned to him, and wanted to say something, but suddenly saw helplessness and shame in his pretty face. He sighed and said with a pause, “I don't hate you; I just don't want any more trouble.”

Riki nodded, pointed at his plastered hand, and said, “You mean that? I heard the story: You jumped in like heroes and saved Akira,” then he looked down and muttered, “Lucky bastard.” David sighed and said, “I'm not a hero; I just found out by accident and did what I could. Like what I did for you a few minutes ago.”

With this, the boy's face changed; he smiled and said, “That's right, I hadn't looked at it from this angle.” He laughed and added, “Do you know they gave you a name?” The foreign boy raised his eyebrows and said, “A name? Who? Why?”

- It's obvious: The same men you beat that night I heard that one of them has two broken ribs and another has to be in bed for a month.

David was taken aback when he heard this. He had never intended to injure anyone, yet he had now caused some individuals pain. Azuma, as if he had read the foreign boy's thoughts, came forward, put his hand on his shoulder, and said, “Don't worry, boy, you didn't do anything wrong; don't feel bad for them.” David sighed and replied, “I know they are criminals, but still, this amount of damage was excessive.”

Azuma rolled his eyes and said, “Are you crazy? Look at your plastered hand; did you believe if you didn't hit them, they wouldn't hit you too? Don't be so stupid; you have to be strong in this world.” David took a deep breath and said, “Now what do they call me?” Azuma smiled mysteriously and said, “Higuma.”

David frowned and said, “What does that mean? Some kind of profanity?” Azuma laughed and said, “No, no. It literally means brown bear.” The foreign boy raised his eyebrows and said, “Brown bear?”

- Yes, I think it suits you.

Then he laughed happily. David, feeling a little better, said with a smile, “Well, it's not that bad,” but suddenly the pain in his head started, the smile dried up on his lips, and he closed his eyes in pain. Azuma stopped laughing and asked worriedly, “Are you okay?” The foreign boy replied with a long pause, “I'm fine; I have to take my medicine.”

- Don't you have it with you?

- I have it, but I can't use it here; that pill makes me sleepy. I'm sorry, Azuma-san, I have to go.

He turned his back on him and started stumbling with difficulty and pain. Azuma quickly moved to his side, threw the foreign boy's healthy arm around his neck, and said, “You can't go home alone in this state; do you want me to take you to the doctor?” David replied with difficulty. “N-no, my house is close, about 10–15 minutes away.” He tried to remove his hand from his neck, but Azuma stopped him and said, “You can't go alone; I'll take you; just tell me which way to go.”

- I-I don't want to disturb you, Azuma-san; I-I can go myself.

The boy frowned and said, “Don't call me Azuma-san! Riki! Just Riki! Don't be so stubborn; you're not in a good situation. Besides, it's my fault you stopped and helped me; otherwise, you'd be home by now, so don't whine like that and show me the way.” David, who could not resist anymore because of the pain, slowly showed the way with a nod. The boy sighed and carefully made him walk.

After 20 minutes, they reached the house and climbed the stairs with difficulty. As soon as he entered the house, David sat there in the hallway. He could not take a single step anymore. Riki said confusedly, “Where's your medicine?” The foreign boy barely pointed to his backpack. The boy promptly pulled out a nylon and said, “Which one?”

- P-pink

Riki quickly took a pill out of the package, put it in his mouth, and helped him drink a glass of water. David closed his eyes and leaned against the bathroom door in the corridor, and Ricky was looking at him worriedly. The foreign boy was so quiet that it scared him, and he asked quietly, “Are you better? Do you want me to call an ambulance?”

There was no answer for a few seconds, and as soon as he wanted to take out his phone and call an ambulance, the foreign boy said slowly, “I'm better... but I can't stay awake for long... This painkiller is strong... I'll fall asleep slowly...” Riki sighed in relief and said, “Thank God, you scared me, David-chan. Let me help you get on the bed.”

With that, he carefully placed the foreign boy's healthy hand around his neck and worked hard to lift his limp and heavy body. As they slowly walked into the room, David said in a low voice, “Thanks… Riki…” The Japanese boy smiled when his name was called. But as soon as he was about to answer, his leg suddenly twisted, and he lost his balance right in front of the bed. He fell on the floor, and the foreign boy fell on him.

He said confusedly, “I'm sorry, David, are you okay? You're not hurt?” But there was no sound. The foreign boy was sleeping; his breathing was heavy, and his head was lying on Riki's belly. He looked at the bed with annoyance and said, “Damn, it was only a little longer.” He was no longer able to lift him up and put him on the bed alone. He sighed, lifted David's head slightly, shifted himself, and leaned against the bed, resting David's head on his leg. He stretched out his hand, took the control of the air conditioner from the table, and turned it on. Then he pulled the sheet from the bed and threw it on the foreign boy.

He could put a pillow under his head and leave, but he didn't want to leave the boy alone. He did not know why he liked this boy, but he was happy to meet him. In fact, he was a little jealous of Akira. When he heard how David jumped between seven men with his bare hands to prevent them from raping him, he felt even more jealous.

He looked at the sleeping boy's face and said with a sad smile, “Maybe if I had someone like you in my life, I could live better.” He sighed, smiled to himself, and said, “What's wrong with you, Riki? What do others see of you except your past? This boy must have heard you were Urisen; he probably knows you as a male whore who flirts with men.” He looked again at that sleeping face and said, “I wish you could save me too, David-chan.” Then he gave a bitter smile and rested his head on the bed.

***

It was dark when he returned to Shinjuku. His meeting with the boss had taken some time, and after that, he came directly to Wakamatsu-Kawada Station by train. He should have talked to Big Boy before going home, and apart from that, he should have asked how he was doing.

During this time, he had tried to keep his distance from the foreign boy. He didn't want to involve him more in his cursed and chaotic life. It hurt his heart to have to be cold and indifferent to David. The fact was that he wanted to hug him tightly, tell him how he felt, and ask him to stay only with him and by his side. But what did reality matter? He was cursed.

First, this curse was on his father, mother, and sister, and now on this foreign boy who helped him. Fortunately, he survived, but every time he looked at David's broken hand or remembered what happened in the bathroom that day, his heart fell in pain. So it was better that he distanced himself from him. Anyway, he had told him that he is not the type of boy who wants to date another boy.

Akira sighed and stood behind the door of the foreign boy's house. He took a deep breath and rang the doorbell. After about a minute, no one answered the door. Does that mean he was asleep? He took the spare key from behind the mailbox, turned it in the keyhole, which was not locked, opened the door, and entered the house.
