Chapter 28:

Birthday Preparations

Our History

When the day of Jack's birthday finally arrived I was too busy organizing everything to even think about anything else. His father wanted everything to be perfect which luckily aligned with my aim, so there was no need to motivate me to work harder than usual.

I have already notified the girl, I mean, Jack's friend, and I can only hope that she will take my advice and bring that cat back home. If not... I will figure something out if that time comes. But now my priority is arranging everything to be exactly how it should be. I even asked the maid to make some flower arrangements to be put right in the middle of the dining room table to make it look more classy and elegant. Some candles still need to be put on the table as well for decoration but Mrs. Nichols assured me that she had already seen to it, so I don't need to worry.

Actually, it feels kinda nice to enjoy doing my pretense job for once. Even though I am really not doing much. After all, she is the one cooking and baking everything. Not that I didn't want to help out more but she didn't allow it. Maybe it's for the best. Might not be a good idea to let myself smell of food when the guests arrive. I may have time to get changed after cooking but to have a shower... Hardly. It's best if I just check the details and see that everything is the way it should be.

I picked up the bottles of wine and the champagne and put them on the dining room table. It would be classier if they were served to them but whatever. They can pour their own damned drink for themselves just like on any other day.

I checked the seating arrangements again but I believe it's fine the way it is. I am quite sure that it will be Jack's father to sit at the head of the table. It's his home, plus this way he can enable the youngsters to sit next to each other with the girl's parents sitting in front of them. I cannot help feeling a little envious of this girl arriving from nowhere and getting everything she wants just because their parents are friends. It's so unfair.

After making sure that everything is according to my expectations, I left the dining room and went back to my room. I took out the suit I chose to wear for this occasion. Not that I will attend this dinner of course. It is a close friend, almost close family gathering, so I should rather make myself disappear and pretend like I don't even exist. But I still need to welcome them when they arrive which I would rather do in a more elegant outfit fit for the occasion than in casual wear. First impressions are everything. Even I know that.

I shaved my face, washed my teeth, and got changed. I am already hungry but I have to wait until they go in the dining room to eat. Only after that can I eat something in the kitchen with Mrs. Nichols to be out of sight and don't bother them. Mr. Liu would probably kill me if I do.I was in the middle of adjusting my tie when I heard a knock on my door.

"Come in," I said raising my voice, and to my surprise, it was Jack, who came in. "I see you've finally learned how to knock before you enter a room," I told him arrogantly.

"Yeah," he said and closed the door behind him. He didn't seem to be bothered by the tone of my voice or he pretended like he didn't hear it.

"What is it? You should be waiting in the living room until your guests arrive," I reprimanded him.

"I have an idea."

"I'm all ears. Just make it quick," I said and turned around to face him. And at that moment I wished I hadn't. Because he is wearing a black three-piece suit, my favorite. And he looks stunning wearing it. His friend is a lucky girl indeed.

"There is only one room my father loves more than his office at the company."

"And that is?" I put my hands in my pockets and tried to sound casual.

"His study, he said," and I swear his eyes lit up a little upon saying it.

"And what about it?"

"My father has a safe there. And I bet he keeps his most important documents there," he said with a mischievous smile.

"What are you implying?" I asked suspiciously and slowly took my hands out of my pockets preparing for the worst.

"Well, I'm pretty sure the same combination is its password as his computer's. I'll help you get in and see for yourself whether there is anything in it that would be of help to you."

"This is madness. Your father will kill us both if he finds us there," I told him sternly and went back to the table to pick up my watch and put it on.

"He won't go in there. He will be busy greeting the guests, so he won't have time for it. This is our only chance and you know it."

"So, you even want to do it now? You really did lose your mind, didn't you?"

"Yeah, I did but not the way you think," he told me and turned around to leave. His hand was already on the door handle when I decided not to let him take the blame for it. Since I am sure he will do it anyway even without my help. He must be bored to death to risk everything for a few minutes of adventure.

"Alright, I'm in," I said finally, and when he turned around I could see that mischievous smile again and I thought to myself that if his bewitching tactic goes on, I'll soon find myself in greater danger than his father firing me for going through his belongings.
