Chapter 8:

Finally the Mchafu Boss

Lost Memories from Another World

In the last few days, we've spent moments deep within the forest where monsters appear more swiftly and can hide themselves amid the trees, rocks, and the surroundings. Even though it's becoming progressively more challenging and there are more of them, I'm no longer gaining as much experience. The truth is, I can easily vanquish them now without any effort, but they keep appearing, one after another.

In addition to the high-level Mchafu and some new creatures called Siivetklerz; they can fly, have deformed faces and many teeth. They’re level eight or nine, some even twelve and they're quite tough opponents with incredibly agile, or perhaps I'm still slow.

I'm at level fourteen now, it's been two full weeks. Today, I believe something significant is about to happen. I can feel it, Daichi seemed unusually cheerful these past few days.

The dire wolves were around level twenty or more, if I recall correctly what they told me, I could barely stand up to them. No, not even that, I almost fled away and panicked, not even knowing who I was or where I was. But now I feel more confident and I have my two friends.

Before Yuki wakes me up and yells in my ear, I jerk upright in bed. I look at her and she understands. She gazes at me with annoyance.

“Dare to do it, and you won't leave here alive.”

Internally, I chuckle. I want Yuki to see me differently someday, but that's not likely for now. “I wasn't thinking about anything.”

“Sure, you weren't…”

“Well, guys, time to get up!” Daichi exclaims, springing out of bed and the sheets tumble to the floor. “Today's the day for the Mchafu boss; finally, some fun!”

“Daichi…” Yuki can't complete her sentence; she covers her face, blushing.

“Cover yourself down there, damn it!” I throw the pillow right at his groin and he catches it, covering himself, then heads to the bathroom, neglecting to cover his back. “He's beyond repair.”

“I'll wait for you downstairs,” Yuki mumbles, her face still red.

Recently, we've been able to enjoy larger and better-quality breakfasts. Slaying so many monsters, even if they're low-level, provides us with Kobrex and some items that we can sell for money.

“Take this, it's a gift,” Daichi says, emphasizing the word 'gift' differently. “It will help you identify things and understand their nature and purpose.”

I open the small box Daichi hands me, revealing a peculiar pair of glasses. I put them on, although I think I'm wearing them incorrectly. Yuki laughs and steps forward to adjust them properly.

“It's a Zkan,” Yuki explains as she finishes adjusting them and takes a seat. “You'll be able to read and describe things better. The names of monsters will appear and you'll gain information upon defeating them. The more you hunt, the more accurate information you'll obtain.”

“Thank you! I didn't want you spending money on me. Thank you so much,” I say with a smile as I explore the objects, which Yuki describes to me: table, chairs, t-shirts, the names of Yuki and Daichi and their levels. I can operate them with ease, turning them on and off as needed. “How does it work or charge?”

“It charges using sunlight. Simply use them during the day and they'll charge and work perfectly. And one more thing… Actually, it was your capture and monster hunting money. Being in our party I earn coins in each hunt.”

“Ahh… that explains everything, including why you've started drinking more without hesitation.”

“Besides that, I'm grateful to you too, Kaiko.”

“Well, shall we get started?” Yuki exclaims as she rises from her seat. “Shall we face the Mchafu Boss? It's time.”

We both nod and stand up. I feel completely prepared to battle the boss, despite being exhausted from training day and night. I feel confident in myself.

We prepare swiftly and arm ourselves. I now have a better sword and a small cloth armor, It's not much, but it's what I could afford; it slightly boosts my stats and I really like how it looks on me. Hopefully, the boss won't completely destroy it. I haven't allocated my Attribute Points yet. I think once I reach level twenty, I'll have a clearer idea of what to do and what kind of warrior classes I can become.

We reach the edge of the forest and I begin to feel a slight discomfort on my head. Before we venture in fully and commence the hunt, I halt the group for a moment.

“Question…” I break the silence.

“The idea with the Zkan was for you to stop asking dumb questions…” Daichi groans and Yuki nods in agreement.

“Are there better Zkanz? I feel like this one is pressing on my head a bit.” I've barely finished speaking when Daichi laughs, as usual.

“There are, but they cost a lot more. There are models for everything and they're quite pricey; loads of Zilberz and Ourez.”

“Some can detect more exotic things like fruits and vegetables, indicate the life and level of enemies, or provide extra information on how best to defeat them and their weaknesses. It's all about information and information has a price.”

“There are Poakex hunters who try to gather information on all the monsters out there and sell it to the highest bidder, for new Zkanz, investigation, or other things.”

“So, I have to start from the bottom.” Just like I did with my level. I nod to the air, confident in my path and understanding how everything works.

“Exactly. We start from the bottom, aiming to grow, improve, becoming experts in what we enjoy.” Daichi seems overly enthusiastic and wears a smile that's a bit intimidating. Seems eager to engage in real combat again.

On the path through the forest, we don't stop for a second until we encounter the boss. Daichi knows the way; he claims to have killed it a few times before, though he doesn't go into details. Something tell me that he may have an untold past.

“We're almost there!” he exclaims as he completely obliterates a Hent;, a new tree-like creature. With his mace, he strikes it without needing to charge energy, reducing it to splinters within seconds.

We keep advancing between the trees until we reach a clearing and the sunlight illuminates our faces.

I activate my Zkan and scan around: Mchafu Boss – Level 23.
