Chapter 19:
The Sound of Love
The morning light streamed into the school through the windows, painting the floor and walls with golden hues. Inside the classroom, there was a palpable air of anticipation, mingling with a touch of nostalgia.
"I was thinking, how about we all get together next Saturday to play some music?" I suggested, my eyes sweeping across the faces of my friends.
Akane responded with a warm smile, and our eyes met briefly, conveying an unspoken understanding. Airi, composed as always, listened attentively, while Haru, though initially hesitant, couldn't hide the glint of curiosity in his eyes.
As I brought up the idea of getting back into rehearsals, an almost imperceptible exchange passed between Airi and Haru. They shared a look that went beyond words as if they had developed a secret language of their own.
After a moment, Haru spoke up, his tone carrying a firm determination to ensure his future success. "I'm really excited about the idea, Yuuji, but you know the college entrance exams are right around the corner. Even though I can manage good grades, I can't afford to lose focus."
"I get where you're coming from, Haru. But spending one weekend on music won't throw everything off balance. In fact, it might even help relieve some of the study pressure," I replied, aiming to blend understanding with a hint of insistence.
Haru appeared on the verge of being swayed, his expression oscillating between his sense of responsibility and his undeniable passion for music. "I understand that, but at the same time, I can't afford to slow down now."
Airi exchanged a knowing glance with Haru, and they shared a smile loaded with significance. It was clear to me that Haru's decision was rooted in something deeper, something that Airi had a unique understanding of.
Airi interjected, her voice was soft and warm, "I'm on Haru's side here, Yuuji. The upcoming exams are a crucial phase, and we can't afford to get too distracted."
I made one final attempt to rally them together. "Come on, it's been quite a while since we've all done something together. And I've got something special planned."
Airi and Haru exchanged another look, their eyes speaking volumes. A connection had solidified between them, a connection that extended beyond the confines of upcoming exams and uncertainties about the future.
I then revealed the sheet music I had prepared for everyone. Each page was a musical representation of the essence of each member of our group. Airi's melodies were gentle and captivating, mirroring her kind nature. Haru's drum lines were intricate and precise, a reflection of his technical prowess. Akane's guitar chords exuded passion, capturing the fire that burned within her. As for me, I had crafted harmonies that seamlessly blended these individual elements, symbolizing the unity of our friendship.
Unable to resist a playful tease directed at Haru, I shot him a mischievous grin. "Haru, do you even remember how to read drum sheet music?"
Haru chuckled, the residual tension dissipating. "Of course, I remember. It's not like I'd forget overnight."
With a furrowed brow betraying his lingering concerns, Haru turned his attention to Airi, seeking reassurance in her eyes.
"What do you think, Airi?" he asked, his look revealing a mix of curiosity and hope.
Airi's warm smile conveyed her response even before she spoke. "I think one Saturday won't hurt anyone, right? And your enthusiasm for this is pretty clear, Haru."
After some back and forth, everyone tentatively agreed to gather for rehearsals next weekend. However, as we were wrapping up and getting ready to leave, Haru pulled me aside into a quiet corner of the room. His voice dropped to a hushed tone as he began to speak.
"I know how much you want us to start rehearsing again, and I want that too, Yuuji. But this is something serious. I need to focus on my studies after this."
I could sense the gravity in his words, and my concern deepened. What could be weighing on him so heavily?
"Why are you so stubborn about this? We're all well aware of your capabilities."
Haru rubbed the back of his neck, his hesitation apparent as he wrestled with how to express himself.
"It's hard to put into words, Yuuji..."
"Whatever it is, I'm here to help. You can trust me."
Haru took a breath, then continued. "Alright, but promise me you won't say a word about this to anyone else?"
His tone only intensified my concern, leaving me eager to understand what was troubling him so profoundly.
"You have my word," I assured him.
"So... a few weeks back, I ended up confessing my feelings to Airi."
"What?" My surprise was impossible to contain.
"Lower your voice, Yuuji," he said, his hand covering my mouth. "Remember that conversation we had with Airi? That day when she got really upset?"
"How could I forget?"
"So, I had a feeling that after we patched things up, she might confess. But at the time, I didn't feel ready for it, even though I had feelings for her," he explained, his gaze shifting as he spoke. "I spent a lot of time grappling with it until I couldn't hold it in anymore and ended up telling her how I felt..."
While I knew that Airi and Haru shared a close bond, I never imagined that such a turn of events could occur. In a way, though, I couldn't help but feel happy for both of them.
"And now? Are you two a couple?"
Haru's response carried a trace of disappointment. "No. Airi talked about the future and all, and she mentioned that she'd only consider being in a relationship if I got accepted into university. She stressed the importance of pursuing my goals. Can you believe that?" Haru's voice held a mixture of surprise and admiration.
"I understand why you're throwing yourself into your studies now," I said, the weight of my earlier insistence on rehearsals suddenly settling in. "If you think it's best, we can cancel the whole thing..."
Haru immediately interrupted my suggestion. "No way! I really want to ace those entrance exams, but I also love playing music with all of you. And considering what you've said, maybe taking a break will actually help clear my mind a bit."
A sense of relief washed over me as I heard his words, but I didn't want to inadvertently impede his academic aspirations.
"I wish you had shared this with me earlier, but I get it, Haru. Just so you know, I'm fully behind you," I assured him, placing my hands gently on his shoulders as our eyes met in a meaningful connection.
As we rejoined Airi and Akane, their welcoming smiles conveyed the unity and dedication that defined our friendship. It was finally clear to me what had been going through Haru's mind and the challenges he was grappling with. While I had no intention of disrupting their developing relationship, I fervently hoped that everything would fall into place for them.

Haru's house buzzed with energy that sunny afternoon, setting the stage for our musical gathering. Our instruments were tuned, our spirits aligned, ready to weave a symphony that celebrated the essence of friendship. Under Haru's roof, the atmosphere crackled with excitement and eager anticipation, like a cauldron of emotions poised to burst into a harmonious fusion.
And so, I closed my eyes, immersing myself in the collective energy of the moment, free from any distractions.
Haru struck the first beat on the drums, infusing the room with lively and unwavering rhythms. I joined in with my distinctive touch on the guitar strings, conjuring notes that seemed to challenge the very fabric of time and space.
In the blink of an eye, I was transported back to our childhood days, when it was just the two of us in this very room, unraveling new melodies and sharing laughter as we flipped through manga pages. An overwhelming sense of nostalgia enveloped me, a comforting and familiar embrace that soothed the soul.
Next, Airi's ethereal piano chords intertwined with our melodies, adding a layer of depth to the music that mirrored her own unique essence. At that moment, we ceased to be separate individuals. Instead, we were three kindred spirits united in a symphony of joy and friendship.
In my mind's eye, scenes of our shared history flickered like the frames of a cherished film. Airi and Haru's playful banter, and me occupying the space between them, an amused spectator to their lighthearted interactions. Whether we were out on the streets, at school, or simply standing in a random convenience store, I felt enveloped by their presence. People who accepted me just as I was, who laughed with me as I made faces while struggling with the sourness of a Gari-Gari.
Soon after, Akane's guitar chords joined the musical mix, each note serving as a stepping stone toward a magical journey that only we could fully comprehend. With her contribution, our musical synergy felt complete. The room seemed to quiver with pent-up energy, on the verge of bursting forth, incapable of containing the sheer vitality we infused into our performance.
And then, as if extending an invitation to the universe to join us in our celebration, I began to sing the opening verses of our song. My voice acted as a catalyst, igniting an internal flame that cast a warm and mysterious glow throughout the room.
From the moment I saw your face,
Doubt in your eyes, but a smile's embrace,
It took just a moment to know,
I wanted you by my side to grow.
As the melody flowed, memories of my first encounter with Akane resurfaced in my mind. I remembered the day she walked into the music store, her expression a mix of curiosity and confusion as she surveyed the array of instruments before her. I recalled the first smile she bestowed upon me, a smile that struck me deep within my chest, eliciting feelings I had never experienced before.
