Chapter 24:

Class Trip Anticipation

Caffeine Cupid: a love brewed in coffee and chaos

The sunlit corridors of our school buzzed with the anticipation of the imminent class trip. Excitement filled the air as Cherry, Daichi, Satoshi, Tatsuya, Kobayashi, and I huddled together in our classroom during the lunch break. With the next day promising adventure, we had a mission to tackle today – to compile a list of essentials that would ensure our journey's success.

As members of the same group for the trip, we devised a plan. Our goal was to create a comprehensive list of items, and then two of us would embark on a shopping spree to gather everything efficiently. Cherry, her fingers nimble and focused, jotted down the items on a scrap of paper tucked at the end of her notebook. Around the room, we shared our requirements with gusto.

The hum of ideas filled the space as we listed our essentials, each suggestion adding another brushstroke to the canvas of our impending adventure.

"Insect repellents," Daichi declared, his voice laced with a hint of caution, as if already preparing for potential skirmishes with the great outdoors.

"Motion sickness tablets," Satoshi chimed in, causing a ripple of laughter. Clearly, the memory of past trips lingered in his mind.

"Bandaids," Tatsuya added, his practicality shining through in his choice. After all, adventures could sometimes lead to misadventures.

"Lip balm, cherry flavored," Kobayashi quirked an eyebrow at Cherry, who simply shrugged, unapologetically embracing her fruity preference.

"Paper cups and tissues," I pitched in, envisioning impromptu picnic scenarios that demanded preparedness.

"Power bank, masks, cream, and facewash," Cherry listed, her pen dancing like a maestro conducting a composition of necessities.

My eyes skimmed over the list, landing on the last entries that elicited a mischievous grin. Cherry's coffee cravings were no secret to anyone, and her strategic planning was nothing short of legendary. "Cold coffee cans—five of them," I read aloud, my tone teasing.

"Ground coffee sachets—ten small packets," Cherry's words flowed smoothly, as if she had merely listed mundane items. But we all knew her love affair with coffee was anything but ordinary.

A knowing smirk tugged at the corner of my lips. Cherry's plan for caffeine abundance was not lost on me. This, undoubtedly, would add an interesting twist to our adventure.

"We're good on the other essentials, so these are the ones we need to buy," Cherry confirmed, the air of organization surrounding her.

The day brought a shortened school schedule, a prelude to the eagerly awaited class trip. Dividing up responsibilities, we split into pairs. Daichi and Satoshi took charge of the shopping list, while Cherry and Kobayashi sought bus details and assigned tasks. Tatsuya and I headed to the academic office to collect uniforms and temporary IDs.

After fulfilling our respective roles, our group reconvened in front of the school, the afternoon sun casting a warm glow upon us. We began our leisurely walk towards the exit, where an unexpected twist awaited.

Cherry's phone rang, its melody piercing through the animated chatter. It was a video call from Daichi, an unusual occurrence that intrigued us all. Cherry answered, her curiosity evident in her eyes.

"It's rare for Daichi to video call anyone," Cherry mused aloud, answering the call.

"What's going on, Daichi?" Cherry inquired.

And then, like a gust of wind that carries laughter, Daichi's voice rang out, tinged with incredulity. "Cherry, are you out of your mind?"

Perplexed, Cherry's brows furrowed. "What are you talking about?"

His exasperated voice echoed through the phone's speakers, as if he'd just discovered a cosmic riddle. "Cherry, are you plotting a caffeine revolution? 500 cold coffee cans and 100 packets of ground coffee? On a three-day trip?"

Laughter rippled through the air as Tatsuya and I exchanged amused glances. "Cherry, you really outdid yourself this time," Tatsuya chuckled.

Cherry's baffled expression gave way to realization. "But that's not what I wrote!"

Amidst the chuckles, Satoshi took the paper from Daichi's hand, his expression shifting from incredulity to amusement. "Hold on, let's investigate. Someone overwrote the quantities, and Karma's handwriting is all over it. Classic."

Unrestrained laughter reverberated through the air as the truth unfolded. Cherry's vexation was palpable, her eyes shooting daggers at me. "Karma, if you think you can escape this unscathed, think again."

With the sun's descent, the park bathed in a warm glow, and Satoshi and Daichi joined our rendezvous, each taking hold of their designated bags. IDs, uniforms, and information were exchanged as we prepared for the adventure ahead. With shared laughter still lingering in the air, we parted ways, each of us venturing towards our homes to ready ourselves for the journey.

Cherry and I ambled home together, our steps in sync as our conversation danced from topic to topic. Cherry's irritation gradually melted into an endearing pout, an ongoing tease that I found utterly captivating.

"You're going to drink 500 cans of cold coffee, mark my words," she grumbled, her fingers tightening around my collar.

"Aww, don't be mad, my little Cherry," I said.

"You're relentless, aren't you?" Cherry sighed, her voice a mix of exasperation and amusement.

I grinned, the fondness in my heart impossible to hide. "It's my duty to keep you on your toes, my dear Cherry."

"You're insufferable," Cherry retorted, her cheeks tinted with a blush that gave life to her jest.

My arm wound around her waist, drawing her into a tender embrace. Her profile, illuminated by the soft evening glow, seemed to transcend reality—a moment suspended in time, etched into memory like a delicate painting.

"By the way," I began, a mischievous glint in my eye, "I was eating this coffee-flavored candy. Would you like a coffee-flavored kiss, my darling?"

The world seemed to pause for a heartbeat, and Cherry froze in place. Her cheeks flamed into a radiant hue, and her reaction was a delicate symphony of flustered astonishment. Stammering, she sought words that seemed to have fled in the face of this unexpected proposition.

"W-What?" she managed, her voice barely more than a whisper, her eyes wide with a mix of incredulity and embarrassment.

With a heart warmed by her reaction, I took a step closer, our proximity intimate yet gentle. Her breath seemed to catch in her throat, and the blush that consumed her only deepened. And then, in a moment that felt both tender and exhilarating, she closed her eyes, her face burying into my chest.

An affectionate smile tugged at my lips, and I encircled her in a comforting embrace. Her words, soft and endearing, reached my ears. "You're an idiot.
