Acceptance

The area surrounding the school was quiet, only an occasional gust of wind could be heard.

I was nervous, extremely so.

I hadn’t stepped foot in the school in such a long time. How old even was I? I couldn’t remember. I knew I still had a few years of schooling left. I knew I did, of course I did. It hadn’t been that long; it couldn’t have been. I knew that only a few months had passed, of course I knew that. I was sure of that, I had to be.

I walked along the path to the main entrance. That’s where I had to go, I was sure of it. If you arrived at school late, you had to check in at the office. But... was I even late? Were there even any people in the school? Was I early? Was it a school break? I didn’t know. I had no way of knowing.

I kept walking, my nerves increasing with each step. I tried not to focus much on the building that faced me. I kept my eyes closed, only listening to the constant crunching. I couldn’t help my uneasiness; hadn’t I been walking quite a while? Shouldn’t I be close? I didn’t want to, I was scared, I had no urge to, but how else could I know?

I opened my eyes.

The cleared path had extended. The school only seemed to further in distance, the progress I made had meant nothing. Could I ever make it there? Had there been any possibility of closing this gap? I quickened my pace; I began to sprint. Forward I ran, my hair blowing in the wind, my scarf fighting for freedom, I held one hand to my head; holding my hat down. I needed to get there; it’s meaning to me greatened each step.

Was it a trick of the eye? The school seemed to lose distance from me, had the gap begun to close? Had I truly gotten closer? I put every ounce of willpower into my ability to travel.

Each step of greater force, the beating of my heart, the shallow breaths I took, everything of the like. How did I react, was that who I was? Everything I had ever done, every step I had taken, every mile I walked, every place I’d been, every place I’d lived, every breath I’d breathed. Had that all led to this moment? Had it brought me here? Did I have reason to regret everything I’d ever done? Would I have been better off on another path? Tingling sensations, escape from one’s own body. Disconnected movement, a body without a soul, feeling without sense, feeling without any sense, living without any feeling. Disconnection puts one in a state of unease.

I couldn’t chase a certain thought from my head, it had bothered me for quite some time.

uppity, heartbreaking, mysterious, joyous, safe, wide, loud, old-fashioned, broken, ten, modern, jolly, inexpensive, ripe, dull, lopsided, milky, synonymous, dependent, steadfast, lean, protective, possible, fragile, greedy, zealous, smelly, knotty, upbeat, abrasive, thick, pumped, psychotic, unhealthy, nappy, somber, defiant, filthy, industrious, unbiased, and cultured.

Who was I?

Couldn’t I be more than lists of adjectives? Couldn’t my thoughts live beyond the bounds that were set for me? Or was I only a part of a system? What use could I ever be of? Perhaps... perhaps I wasn’t meant to be here. Perhaps I wasn’t supposed to be in this snow, perhaps I shouldve stayed home.

I stopped running, taking a moment to catch my breath. Through my gasps, I looked ahead. The area was empty. The building had gone. No pathway led to anywhere, only snow and trees filled the field. I turned to face what was behind me, the entrance to the neighborhood stood.

How long had it been?

Had I even gone anywhere?

Had I accepted myself? Had I accepted myself as a stupid, spineless, philosopher? Had that been the ease my heart needed?

With a smile, I turned back toward our home.
