Chapter 19:

A Trap For Them

Beasted

At night Patty was turned with her back towards Zeev in bed. He snuggled up to her, wrapping his arms around her and nuzzling her neck and the side of her face. She struggled to open her mouth, but she finally did. "I want you to leave... I brought disturbance and danger into your life. I became a burden to your peaceful existence."

Zeev froze out of shock. His stomach dropped and choked on an invisible lump. "I won't do it! Never!" He protested. Patty sighed. "I wished we never had met. You would be now happy married to that wolfy girl and have a beautiful fulfilling life in your village."

Those words out of her lips stung like a knife in Zeeve's chest. "That day, if I hadn't met your father and you, I wouldn't survive. Till recently I was just patiently existing. I am happy I did meet you!" He forced her to face him and pressed his forehead against her.

Hiding tears, which sparkled in the corners of his eyes. "Please don't take away my reason for living. I waited for so long till we meet again." Patty was angry at herself for even mentioning such things, but on the other hand, she was terrified, of what will happen now. He indeed was in danger.

They both sat up in bed. With a trembling voice, she asked him one more question. "Should we relocate together?" He hugged her tightly dipping his face into her chest. "Yes... please... together..." Suddenly Zeev perked up. "What's wrong?!" Patty asked.

Loud banging on the door followed the end of her sentence. Zeev straight jumped up and ran towards the door and checked the peephole. "Katty?!" He unlocked and opened the door in a rush. Katty fell to his feet crying. Patty was already standing behind Zeev watching the whole scene unfold.

"Please, save him, save my husband, save Roman!" Zeev fell also to his knees, holding Katty by her shoulders. "What are you talking about? What happened? Where is he?!" Katty was in hysteria, speaking incoherently. "He was captured. He was selling stuff here in the village. He was kidnapped. He is in danger right now!"

Zeev stood up. "I will go with you right now and we will track him down together..." As he was making a step forward, Patty without realizing grabbed him by his arm. Katty looked at her. Patty retorted the glance and then shifted her eyes towards Zeev, who turned immediately.

She released her grip. "I will go with you too." Zeev brushed her off. "No way! It's dangerous and you are just a human. I won't risk your safety." Of course, she protested. "I can't let you go. I am afraid what will happen and we promised each other something a moment ago..." He sighed. "But you will do whatever I tell you. When it gets dangerous I will send you away." She nodded.

The moon was shining on the pitch-black forest. It didn't take long to hear screams in the distance. Zeev together with Katty in their werewolf form and Patty sitting on his back stood on the road. They were sniffing in the air, trying to get the scent of the hunters.

Zeev was locked with the smell of iron lingering around. It was blood... Roman's blood. It was so strong that even Patty could pick it up in the air. Katty whimpered in fear. They may be already too late. Patty tried to cheer her up. "I am sure, he might be just lightly wounded. We will find him and save him."

They both ran on all fours up the hill from, where it came. They saw them. Roman was lying on the ground, blood gushing out of a non-specific wound. The ground under him was soaked in crimson. Two armed men stood over him, guarding him.

The trio hid behind some trees a little under the pathway. Patty got an idea. "Katty you will go a little left and run out of the bush down the road and lure away one of them. I will go to the right and do some commotion to lure the other guy. In that time Zeeve will grab Roman and run to safety."

Zeev gave out a silent disagreeing huff. Patty didn't give up. "We don't have anything better. Don't worry. I will hide. We shouldn't waste any more time." After some hesitation, Zeev moved Patty to that designated place. Katty waited till he was back and then she did her part.

One of the hunters took the bait and went after her. Patty could see it was working and started to make noises at her side and then jump into the bush. The other hunter went to check it out. Zeev took his chance and jumped on the road, took Roman on his back, and ran up the hill with him.

The hunter who went into Patty's trap noticed the disappearance. Patty made some more commotion. The hunter was confused. He wasn't sure what to do and decided to go back, but the wounded werewolf man was not there. Patty slowly went up the road to escape that situation.

After a five-minute walk turned back to act like an innocent woman, who got lost in the middle of the forest to buy time for the others. She didn't reveal this part of her plan to Zeev, because he would never agree with this. Both hunters were already united together and by the sight of Patty, they lifted their guns.

She raised her arms. "Woah! What's going on? Are you two hunting in the evening? I am sorry to have startled you. I got lost and I need you to help me, which way is the right one to the village?" Both men looked at each other. One of them was, that stranger from the market. That was lucky, he knew that Patty wasn't a werewolf. He checked it before.

He pointed behind him and wanted to say something. The other guy cut him off. "I am sorry, but you will need to go with us." Patty stopped and didn't go any closer. "You expect a woman to go somewhere with two armed men?! I don't think so, I sense some stranger danger vibes from you two."

She made a step back and the persistent hunter wanted to go and grab her. She started to run and he was close behind her. Because of the darkness she went over the edge of the road and slipped downhill. In the last second, she grabbed a tree and stabilized herself.

Both men were standing on top of the road looking down at her and calling her up. Patty still kept up her act. "Well, boys I would rather..." Something didn't feel right, something was suddenly very wrong. She felt a sudden dread creeping up on her. The hairs on her back stood up. The hunter, which she met at the village tried to mock her. "Common little girl, did you lose your courage?" Both hunters got silent and raised their rifles.

Next to Patty's head slowly appeared a massive snout...
