Chapter 1:

The Forgotten Past

The Forgotten Past

“It’s her again…”

The image of her reflected within my pupils yet again, separated by an entire realm.

Ever since I first laid eyes on her 3 years ago, she has been in my line of sight every minute, and yet, I couldn’t look away.

“I want her.”

I muttered under my breath before heading back to work, guiding the lost lambs.

She was a unique one. Even with all my authority, I couldn’t find a single piece of information on her.

It was as if she did not exist, at least not down there. A girl, seemingly born in hell. Suffering every single day with no one to lean on, that is who she was.

She had come close to meeting me but could never take the next steps. It was as if something, or someone was preventing her from it, perhaps, even me subconsciously.

One day, I couldn’t keep my curiosity and sought my superior for her.

“Well…She is my daughter.”

A single sentence spoken by him reverberated across the hall.

“But why is she there instead of here?!”

“It was her desire. She sought death more than anyone else. You of all people should understand.”

The allure of death was captivating. It was the same allure that got me here in the first place.

“To your own daughter…Do you have no concern for her life?”

“I can’t go against her wishes. Her life is in the hand of Eros…and you.”

Unable to face him any longer, I stormed out the door, my mind in shambles.

With my wish in mind, I headed to the one who sent her there in the first place. Only she could have such powers.

“Please…send me down there with her, no matter what it takes.”

“Are you sure about that?” The being cloaked in a bright light spoke to me.

“I need to be with her” I said in a desperate tone, not knowing why I was behaving this way as well.

“Once done, you would have a limited lifespan and the loss of your memories. Despite that, do you still want to head down?”

“If it was fated, I would definitely find her.”

As the conversation ended, I was faced with an overwhelmingly bright light before waking up in a room.

“Where…am I?”

I said groggily as I rose from my bed.

I felt as if I had a bad dream, but I couldn’t remember.

Noticing it was near lunchtime, I got dressed and decided to head to the nearby store to get some food.

As I opened the door, I was greeted by a girl, carrying a bunch of boxes.

“Oh…hello there.” She said with her face devoid of emotion.

She was a cute girl with round eyes and an adorable face.

“H-Hello.”

“I just moved in next door…It’s nice to meet you.”

“Y-Yeah…you too.” I stuttered as she opened the adjacent door to the apartment next to mine.

As I saw her figure disappear inside, I could feel my face burning up.

“…I think…I’m in love…”. It was love at first sight.

The feelings I had rushed to me as I took my walk to the store. It was then that I decided that I wanted her.

It took months of constant wooing, but we eventually started dating. It was only then that I found out about her and her life. She would never speak up about her past to me, yet I could tell she was hanging by a thread.

Three times, I had seen her try to take her own life, and I was there, convincing her to come back to me.

Despite her nature, I could never leave her, it was as if my love for her was etched into my soul. She was one of the people that was said to be ruled by the God of Death, whoever he was.

Every time she attempted to take her own life, she would contact me. It felt to me like she was still clinging on to life, despite her wishes.

And yet, the fateful day of August 15th arrived.

I bolted from work with a single call from her, having the single thought of not wanting her to die on my mind.

As I opened the door to the roof, I was met with her vacant eyes yet again. We had an argument as I tried to pull her back.

“…Because the God of Death is calling me.” She reasoned yet again. I had heard this sentence every time she felt suicidal. If there really was a God of Death, I would have hated him with a passion.

“There’s no God of Death!” I screamed. The words rolled off my tongue as if I knew instinctively that there wasn’t a God of Death.

Despite my persistence, she only looked to her god for acceptance.

It was said that the God of Death appeared as a form most tempting to the one seeing it. Perhaps that’s why I uttered my next words.

“I wanna die, too!”. At that moment, I felt that she was my god of death, as she was the one, I had loved the most.

She turned to me as I said it, my reflection appearing in her eyes.

We both realised at that moment, that we were each other’s God of Death.

“Then, shall we?” She prompted me, her eyes full of life that I had never seen before.

“Yeah, let’s go,” I replied, feeling content with how it had finally ended.

As the image of the two of us jumped, hand in hand, the figure cloaked in light whispered.

“Well, it seems that you found your way back to her after all. Although the ending was ironic in a way of its own…”

Next to her, a figure cloaked in darkness stepped up. He looked into the image floating in the air.

“It looks like Thanatos had his wish after all. It looks like I have to fill his seat now.”

“Don’t you regret leaving him with your daughter?”

“It was their wishes after all.”

“Surely you jest, Hades.”

“Only time will tell, Eros.”

"I better go prepare for the welcome then"

"As shall I..."

The two walked off in opposite directions as the image of two figures falling off a building fizzled out.
