Chapter 8:

For Real This Time, The First Coin

Living with a Ghost: I Wasn't Able to be Reincarnated so, I Became a Ghost.

I take my hands away from his head.

Wow, that was emotionally intense but, that was a lot better than when I “touched” Shinichi.

Maybe I’m getting better at this.

It seems like he hasn’t woken up from my little bit of intrusion into his memories.

Well, I understand him better now.

I agree with God that he needs to be put back on course. Well technically he is on the right course.

Yes, it’s good for him to dedicate himself to his studies but, he should have no regrets either.

I think that’s what God meant.

I start to pace back and forth in his room.

What do I do now?

Originally, I was just going to give him Shinichi’s address but, I don’t think there should be any loose ends either.

But I don’t know.

Should I really be nosy and interfere in his love life?

No, this is what I was brought here for.

I mean yeah, I am here for Shinichi but, there are all the incidental situations that need tending to as well.

God did mention that he eventually has some children that have an impact on the future.

I get it now.

He has to have someone to have children with obviously.

The way he is now he keeps pushing that poor girl away in favor of his studies.

It seems like he didn’t quite grasp or take seriously Satou-sensei’s remarks about Yokoyama-san.

I mean I could see all the times Yokoyama-san was subtly letting him know she wanted to be a bit more than study buddies but, those darned smart guys are always too dense to notice.

That has to change.

He can’t let this one get away.

I only hope it’s not too late.

Maybe I should take a peek at her to make sure it isn’t too late.

Yeah, let’s try this fast travel again and see where it takes me.

I hold my hands together, close my eyes and think of Yokoyama-san.

Once I open my eyes, I’m standing in front of a café.

People are walking through me as they go through the automatic sliding door.

How rude!

It's actually really off putting.

Well, I’m going to take a wild guess that since I’m not in some house or apartment that she’s in this café.

I make my way through the door and survey the seating area.

Ah, there she is, doing some schoolwork it seems.

Next me I notice a girl looking around much like I was doing.

Finally, she lets out a “there she is,” and heads toward Yokoyama-san.

Yokoyama-san notices her and starts putting her things away, stands up and gives her a hug.

“Kasumi-chan how have you been?”

Kasumi sits down and answers “ah you know just the usual university stuff. Classes are definitely harder that’s for sure.”

Just as Kasumi finishes the server comes up to the table and offers her a menu.

“Here’s a menu. Do you need a moment to decide?”

“No thanks, I know what I want. I’ll get the strawberry cake set with a chai tea latte.”

“Thank you very much. I will be back with your order.”

It seems this Kasumi is her kohai from our school and recently started university.

The two start to catch up on old times.

The conversations are not too interesting and really only make much sense if I was a part of their clique.

That was until.

“So have you finally caught Gotou-san yet?”

“No,” she lets out a sigh. “I am about to give up. I have tried just about everything except kissing him and jumping his bones.”

“Aw that’s not good. You two were always together. What happened?”

“School happened. Once we got there, we grew apart mostly from our own studies not being the same. He sunk himself deeper and deeper into his studies.”

“We all knew you two were the perfect couple but wondered why you never took the next step.”

“Yeah, I tried but even in high school he always played off my advances. I mean am I not cute enough?”

“What? Of course, you are! You were always the prettiest in the school.”

“You don’t think…maybe…you know…he’s maybe…”

“No way! I am very certain he isn’t.”

“Then why doesn’t he see you as the soulmate you two truly are.”

“I don’t know but, as distant as we have been lately, I can’t hold out much longer and have to move on.”

“That is really sad to hear. You know all of us are still rooting for you.”

“Thank you. I guess I can try one last time tomorrow. I’ll message him after we’re done here.”

This is bad. She’s really going to give up if he doesn’t come to his senses.

“So how about you and your boyfriend? I hope all is going well for you.”

With that the two start to talk about Kasumi’s own love life and more conversations that don’t mean much or make sense to me.

I think I have what I need to fix this situation now.

I hold my hands together and go back to Taka’s place.

Well, that settles things.

He's got one last chance for him to confess or it’s all over.

Not to mention it will make my job here a little bit of a failure if he doesn’t end up with her.

Looks like I’ll be using my first coin after all.

But what should I do though?

Well God did say that if what I ask is unreasonable it just wouldn’t happen.

So, now all I have to do is figure out what I should ask for.

Now that I’m back in his room I see that he has woken up and is working on his studies again.

Really?

Come on take a break once in a while.

I swear no wonder Yokoyama-san is about to give up on him.

But what can I really do?

I start pacing back and forth behind him as he diligently continues his studies.

I think I got an idea.

So now the wait for him to leave the room or fall asleep again.

“Ah! Bathroom!” he shouts out loud.

Aaand just as I think that he gets up and heads toward the door.

This seems all to convenient to me.

Hey, God, are you helping me out here?

Yeah, I didn’t expect to get an answer either.

Well, now that he’s out of the room.

I head back into the closet and focus myself and take the lid off the second box and get the letter.

Maybe him walking in and seeing it is good.

I fling the letter under the door and it lands by his chair.

Hmm, he might miss it.

Wait, I got a better idea.

I pick up the letter and bring it to his desk and set it down.

Just as I finish putting the letter on the table, he returns to the room.

He makes his way to the desk and begins to sit back down but, pauses as he notices the letter and starts to pick it up.

While he does that, I hold a 10 Yen coin in my hand and start to think of what I want to happen.

I feel the coin fall through my hands and hit the ground with a loud “plink.”

Shocked, he straightens up and then looks to the ground to see the coin laying on his bedroom floor.

As he reaches down a loud notification noise goes off on his phone.

“What is going on here?!” he exclaims.

Ah, all according to plan to scare him into action.

Though I didn’t expect the coin to become real but, it added to the ambiance so, it worked out.

He picks up his smartphone and looks at the message.

Hello Takahiro-san,

I am glad you are doing well and I hope my little bit of theatrics didn’t startle you too much. I am sending you this message because you are at a crossroads of a sort. You will get another message very soon from someone you have had feelings for. Not to sound all doom and gloomy but this will be your cue and last chance, and I do mean last as in FINAL chance, to tell Yokoyama-san how you really feel about her. If you are as smart as I know you are don’t let your love of technical data kill your best chance at being with the one who was there for you in your darkest days and helped you get here. Oh? Who am I and how do I know all this? Well let’s just say I’m a guardian angel.

P.S.: Oh yeah, by the way once you have patched things up, I’ll have a special surprise for you. Don’t mess this up. I’ll be watching you.

He slumps to the ground holding his phone to his chest.

“Is this real? What is going on? Is it…you, Kinzawa-san?”

Just after he finishes his questions out loud, his phone goes off again.

The notification freaks him out and he lets out a yelp.

He pulls the phone from his chest and looks at it.

I peer over his shoulder and notice it’s a Line chat from Yokoyama-san.

---Insert Line chat format---

Ai (Heart emoji): Hey are you still awake?

Go Taka: Yes. What’s up?

Ai (Heart emoji): Are you free tomorrow? I have something I need to talk to you about.

Go Taka: Say, are you available to meet up tomorrow?

Ai (Heart emoji): HAHA, I beat you to the punch.

Go Taka: Always competitive. So, are you available because I am?

Ai (Heart emoji): Yes, I can meet after my class ends at 11:45.

Go Taka: Perfect. Let’s meet in the courtyard near the library.

Ai (Heart emoji): Ok, I’ll be there. You better be.

Go Taka: Oh, I will be there.

Ai (Heart emoji): Well, I’m gonna get some sleep now. You should too.

Go Taka: Thanks. Sleep well.

Ai (Heart emoji): Sleep well.

---End Line chat format---

Now all I have to do is wait for tomorrow to see how things go.

Might as well get some “sleep” if you call it that.

I dunno it feels more like time traveling since I close my eyes and then “wake up” at a different time.

Maybe it’s more like when in an RPG when you stay at an inn and then night becomes day all of a sudden.

The only thing missing is the sleepy time music.
