Chapter 6:

New in town.

Shadow’s Pursuit

Arcane city was a place where the best Aurilis were made and it reflected that quite well. The bright lights, the Dozens of skyscrapers, and multiple people walked up and down the concrete pavement A city in every sense of the word. If you wanted the best of the best, you would find them here. Luckily, the place wasn’t too far from Wrenwood about a three and a half day walk, and with the right kind of magic, one could get there in seconds or a couple of hours.

The woman known as Freya had used her ice magic to conjure a medical bed which Oliver rested on and luckily, she was able to get to the city in time to help the boy with a healer at the general hospital. Unluckily though...

“What do you mean cramped?” She yelled in annoyance. “The boy’s bleeding out here!”

“My apologies madam...” The nurse said. “But with the war going on, the embassy wants us to prioritize Aurilis.”

“Seriously? Those old asses again?” She replied even more ticked off scratching her hair in frustration. “They just keep ruining my night.” The Freya looked behind to check on Oliver, the boy wasn’t doing very well. “Damn it.”

She took the ice bed with her out of the hospital, and began walking towards.... The embassy?

“W-where are we-” The boy coughed a few times “...going...” he said trying to sit up straight only for Freya to push him back on the bed.

“Stop moving idiot... you’ll make it worse.” she replied with a frustrated tone.

“T-thank you...” Oliver replied as he looked up.

“Yeah yeah...”

The embassy was a large building about 4 stories high, and possessed the width and depth of 3 stadiums. “Freya?” An old man called out to her from ahead. “Aren’t yo-”

“Working on it!” she replied as she walked passed him. “Where’s Jake?”

He just came back from a mission don’t distur-”

“So in his room... thanks” she said interupting the man.

“Darkwater!!!” The old man screamed out as she grinned in satisfaction.

They made their way up the escalator, all the way up to the third floor. Oliver used the little strength he had to look around. The exterior was massive, but the interior looked even more so...

‘Why is it so big in here?’ The boy thought to himself

As if reading his mind she answered. “Its called Aethromancy.”

“O-oh....”

“You really don’t know anything?” She asked with a genuinely concerned expression on her face

“N-no-” His coughs became even more violent.

‘Getting worse already?’ she thought as she ramped up her speed running down the hall way.

“Freya?” a girl called out “What are you-”

“I’ll tell you later damn it!!!!” She screamed while running as fast as she could...

3003 was the number on the door of the room, Freya aggressively knocked on the door “Jake!”

the door opened to reveal a man in a red wine t-shirt With white sweat pants. His crimson eyes and white hair were the most obvious way to remember him

“Freya? What are you do-”

“The boy needs healing...” She brought the conjured medical bed in “The hospital’s full so I have to depend on you...”

Jake immediately touched the boy’s forehead almost by instinct. A glowing light began to emanate from his hand. The light disappeared “An infection?!” He exclaimed as he carried the boy to the large bed in the room. “And its spreading fast... pass me my gloves.”

Freya carried his gloves off the rack and threw them across the room to him. He immediately wore the gloves to which he clapped his hands together three times before placing them on Oliver’s chest.

“I’ve never seen an infection spread so fast before.”

“Must’ve been from the wolves.” Freya thought out loud

“Wolves?!” Jake exclaimed.

“Yeah. I was supposed to find the guy killing all those merchants.” Freya replied “but instead I just saw some wolves biting the kid.”

“Well its good you saved him when you did... a couple more minutes and he would’ve been dead for sure”

“Oooh...” the lady replied remembering how she almost left him alone.

“That should be good enough... for now” Jake said as he pulled his hand away from the boy.

“Thats it?” freya asked a little bemused.

“No... I’ll do it a bit later again.” Jake pulled off his gloves. “I don’t want to strain his gate.”

“Well alright...” She turned her focus to Jake as she crossed her arms. “You didn’t tell me you were back...”

“Ohh ah well, Your mission sounded pretty important” Jake faced Freya “Didn’t want my wife to be thinking about rice at this hour.”

“Wha- I...stop projecting...” she exclaimed as she turned her head away trying not to blush.

“You know I’m right~” he hugged her with a wide grin on his face.

“Ugh... You're so annoying.”

“Love you too.” The young man looked back at Oliver “Do you know anything about him?”

“...According to him, His entire family and village was killed off...” she whispers the last part “By a shadow.”

Jake jerked his head back in shock “You don’t mean.”

“Yeah...”

“Oh jeez, poor kid.”

“Freya!!!!” A young woman stood at the entrance “What the hell are you doing here?!!”

Freya looked at the woman with an annoyed expression “You don’t have to scream imbecile!!!”

“Don’t you have a job to do?”

“And what if I’m done?”

“Doubtful...”

“You-”

“Ladies!! The kid’s asleep, please...” Jake sighed

“Sorry.” Freya replied

“Ohh who’s this?” The woman asked as she walked up to the bed.

“No idea.” Jake and Freya replied together.

“Unbelievable.” The woman’s face was in the palm of her hand covering her golden eyes.

“Oh don’t act like I should know!” Freya snapped at her.

“Knowing you, you were probably gonna leave him by himself!!”

“I- uh...” Freya paused

“Did you actually?” Jake cut in.

“N-no...” Freya is a terrible liar. “...Maybe?”

“By the gods Freya.” The woman exclaimed.

“I didn’t think it was that bad!”

“His leg’s broken!!” Jake replied

“C’mon!! gimme a break.”

“Terrible choice of words...” the woman mumbled to herself
