Chapter 29:
The Honest Warrior in a World of Lies
After some walking, the group reached the entrance to a small cave. When they went inside, it actually was much cooler than outside. It also was quite simple inside, with five pillars in the room in total; four at the corners, and one in the center. There was also a small table with two chairs near the left side of the room, and two beds on the right side.
"Well," Katze said, turning to face the group, "this is where I live~!" Ryu looked around at the room. "It's simple, I like it," he said.
All of a sudden, the group heard something.
"Katzenartig Geistwesen," a slightly deep voice said. "How many times do I have to tell you to not bring Humans here?"
Katze chuckled sheepishly and scratched his head. "I probably should've mentioned this as well," he said under his breath. "Uhm, so everyone," he said, looking at the group again, "this is my roommateー"
The person behind the voice then had heard dropped down from the ceiling and landed on his feet, no problem. 'He's like a cat,' Makoto thought, and just as he thought this, he noticed that this person also had cat ears and a tail like Katze. His outfit was the same design, but it was dark grey, he wore a yin pendant instead of a yang pendant, and he had white hair and dark blue eyes.
"Gepard," Katze said awkwardly to the other guy, "please don't call me by my full name, it's embarrassing..."
The guy, who was apparently named Gepard, face-palmed. "You don't call me your 'roommate'; you know full well I'm you Guardian. And you know bringing Humans here is dangerous," he said firmly. "So if you don't want me to call you by your full name, then take these Humans back to the lower levels of the mountain."
Katze pouted, but just as he was about to tell the group they had to go, Makoto stepped up and said, "wait a minute! We need the Chirstel dear Widensburg!!"
Gepard just stared at him, confused. "I... I beg your pardon?"
"Th-th-the thing!" Makoto stammered awkwardly. "The, the...! The shiny rock that can fix Abyss attacks!!" But Gepard just kept staring, as he understood none of what Makoto was talking about. "The... what?" He said slowly, tilting his head slightly and furrowing his brow a bit.
Just then, Katze leaned towards Gepard and whispered, "I think he's talking about the Kristall der Wiedergeburt, Gepard."
Gepard, who now understood, nodded. "Ohh, that," he said quietly to himself. "Why do you need it?" He asked Makoto. "Uhm, my friend, Shiro, he's been affected by the Abyss King's powers, and we found out that the Kristall der... der... well, we found out that the crystal can help him."
Gepard nodded when Makoto finished. After a few seconds, he looked at Makoto and said...
"No."
"Wha- Huh??" Makoto stammered. "As it's guardian, I can't just give the Kristall der Wiedergeburt to anyone," Gepard said, crossing his arms. "We're Apex Paladins though!" Makoto pleaded. "How can I trust you?" Gepard countered.
"Hey," Ryu said firmly, moving towards Gepard, "who are you to talk like that to the Dragon's Chosen, the Savior of Eldoria?"
Gepard glared down at Ryu and said, "I am Gepard Schneeleopard, the Katzenjunge der Eis, trained to protect the Kristall der Wiedergeburt til the Apex falls and the Abyss swallows this world whole."
Ryu took a step back, confused and a bit shocked by what Gepard had said. "Gepard," Katze mumbled, "can you not? Like, can you stop scaring people with your long, melodramatic last will and testament?" Gepard just kept looking at Ryu. "If you stop taking Humans up here, then I'll stop 'scaring' them with my 'long, melodramatic last will and testament'."
"How can I prove it then?" Makoto asked. Gepard and Katze looked at him. "If you don't believe us, then how can I prove that I'm the Chosen One?" Makoto asked again.
Gepard looked at Makoto, then at Katze, who shrugged, seemingly having some kind of conversation about what they should do. 30 (or so) seconds later, Gepard sighed and said, "alright, fine. I'll let you have it."
Makoto's face lit up. "Really??" He asked in excitement.
"IF," Gepard said, "you can best me in battle."
Makoto's shoulders fell. "Oh," he said. "Well, I beat the Abyss King, so I'm sure I can fight you," he said, trying to give himself a pep talk.
Gepard nodded and turned to leave the room. "We'll fight tonight," he said. "And it's a one-on-one fight; that means neither of us can ask for help from anyone." And he left the room.
