Chapter 31:

"Nah, I'd Win"

The Honest Warrior in a World of Lies

"Around 400 years ago, when Gepard and I were young, our villages were destroyed by the Abyss," Katze began. "I don't really remember much of it, I must've been hit on the head, but I remember waking up in this room and seeing Gepard and our Master."

(In Katze's memory)
"You're finally awake," Master said. He looked something like Katze and Gepard, only much older and with a cane.
"Wha- Who are you?" Young Katze said, sitting up. "Where's my family? What happened to them?"
Master shook his head without saying anything, and Katze ーeven though he was a child at the timeー understood what happened.

(Back in the current day)
"I remember," Katze continued, "Gepard was actually kinda shy back then. He told me later that he hadn't talked too much because he had been scared of making someone upset, heh ーngh-"

Katze winced for a second but brushed it off as best he could. "A-Are you sure you're OK?" Makoto asked, worried. "Yeah, no need to worry about me," Katze said. "I've been through worse, hehe."
"Anyhow," Katze continued, "Gepard and I trained for a long time, then we met Zain.
He wasn't like he is now, he was... well, different. But one day, he just changed suddenly, and he fought Master."

(In Katze's memory)
"Zain," Master had said, "I know that this isn't you, it's the Abyss controlling you!"
Zain laughed evilly. "I'm just accepting my Abyssal lineage, Master. What, do you have a problem with that?" He said as he walked closer to Master.
"Zain, I didn't want it to come to this," Master said under his breath, "but you're not leaving me any other choice!"

(Back in the current day)
"That was the last day Gepard and I ever saw our Master," Katze said quietly, looking at Gepard at the far end of the room. "Zain had gotten too powerful, and Master had to sacrifice himself for Zain to accept the deal."
Makoto covered his mouth in shock but didn't make any sound. "Katze..."
"Don't pity us," Gepard interrupted, facing away from Makoto and Katze. "It's still my fault for not being strong enough."

Makoto looked at the two Guardians. They had been through so much, and at such young ages. They were in a war they didn't want to fight in, and Makoto was expected to save the whole world, when he had never even gotten anything above 75% in Math classes. But, Makoto made up his mind. "You know what?" He said to everyone. "I'm gonna fight Zain."
"W-Woah, hold on a second!!" Chihiro said. "You can't just go and fight one of the most powerful enemies we've ever seen just because you heard what he did! You need to plan first!!!" But Makoto shook his head, and said...

"Nah, I'd win."
