Armodafinil is a medicine used to manage excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and shift work sleep disorder. It is used to promote wakefulness and alertness.

Armodafinil Uses:

1. Narcolepsy: Armodafinil is primarily prescribed for narcolepsy which is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden attacks of sleep.

2. Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Armodafinil is also used to improve wakefulness in individuals with OSA, a condition where breathing is interrupted during sleep.

3. Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD): Armodafinil helps people who work night shifts or irregular hours in staying awake during work hours and improves alertness.

4. Off-label Uses: Some off-label uses include treating fatigue associated with multiple sclerosis, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Armodafinil Dosage:

For narcolepsy or OSA the initial dose is 200 mg taken orally once a day in the morning. The dose can be adjusted based on individual response and tolerance up to a maximum of 400 mg daily.

For SWSD a single 200 mg dose taken approximately thirty minutes or one hour before starting the work shift is advised.

Armodafinil Side Effects:

Common Side Effects of Armodafinil include Headache, nausea, nervousness, dizziness, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), and dry mouth are common. Although rare, serious side effects may include severe skin reactions, hallucinations, chest pain, and irregular heartbeat. Seek medical attention if these occur.
