Chapter 0:
President in Another World
Switzerland. The UN peace summit.
When I was summoned to the podium for a few- remarks, they called it, I reluctantly got off my comfortable leather chair and stepped up towards it. The venue hall this time was a grand one, certainly much larger than the last summit in Cairo. Flags of participating nations adorned it's walls.
Among the crowd were many familiar faces. Leaders, dignitaries and ambassadors from several nations across the globe. Some of them I knew very well, others I remembered only from a handshake. Their eyes were sparkling with expectation as they looked at my brightly lit figure standing in front of the microphone.
Here stands the 50th President of the United States of America, they were probably thinking. President Robert Sterling, 56 years old, Democrat. The one whose voice rises above all.
"The voice of the world's largest economy," I said without thinking.
For a moment the audience had a peculiar expression on their faces, which pissed me off.
"I'm here to make it clear that the United States of America's support on the principle that people have a right to choose their own government, whether it be for this conflict or possibly another in the future, will remain steadfast and will never change."
I paused for a brief second to study the crowd's reaction- negative. The signal to keep going.
"On the light of the more recent developments, however, we-"
I was suddenly interrupted from a scream from the crowd- I couldn't tell if it was male or female- before I noticed one of my bodyguards rush over to me in my peripheral vision, screaming out loud.
"Get down, Mr. President!"
But it was too late. There was a small pop sound from somewhere in the crowd as I felt the bullet pierce the center of my chest. I fell down to my knees as I felt the pain fade in, bringing my hand to my chest. I heard the voices of people around me, and even felt one of my bodyguards removing my suit, but everything felt hazy and anything I heard was unintelligible.
Groaning, I brought my hand in front of my eyes. It was covered in blood.
"We need to get him to a hospital!" I managed to make out from the numerous voices around me.
It's too late, I wanted to say. It's already fading away. Everything's going dark...
Darkness.
