Chapter 2:
People are weird
Me and grandpa, after having a closure headed back. We talked throughout the way. Gramps kept a faint smile during the entire conversation.
"Over here," shouted grandpa, waving to my mom.
We walked towards them. Now, the entire family was gathered in one place. My mom and sister were holding wuite a few plastic bags. They handed a few to me. Their shopping spree had seemingly ended. If you were to ask me, it was pretty short in contrast to the usual ones. Time flies by like my summer holidays when my family is shopping at least for them it does. Well finally, sweet home at last.
"Oh I forgot to buy myself a pair of sneakers," said my aunt as she held her head.
"Seriously, now," snarled my mom
"I'll be quick just- two minutes".
Aargh more wait ! Two minutes never means two minutes, it means buddy you'll be waiting atleast half an hour.
My aunt quickly walked away from us.
"Ayaam, go with your aunt," ordered my mom.
Why do I have to go. She is an adult, she can fend for herself. Upon seeing mom's batista like expression, I decided to keep my thought to myself.
"Yes mom," I nodded.
I mumbled to myself angrily, catching up to my aunt.
"Oh you are tagging along".
"--Sort of".
We continued walking in the wide bazaar road for a while and then she took a turn into a much less populated branching street. Again we walked some and areived at the shop. I was stupefied that my aunt could remember which street and shop it was out of the many streets and shops.
We entered the shop. It was a pretty old, rustic, shoe shop. Although it was plain but it was very spacious. The shop had no paint job, it was merely bricks and cement.
The shopkeeper was an old man of about 60 who had arranged all the shoes intricately on shelves or long tables. He wore a track suit and a plain red n white cap.
"You again-"
"Uhum-," nodded my aunt.
We began roaming in the shop and stumbled across an enchanting pair of sneakers. It was not overly designed instead it was simple and refined.
"Aren't they nice"
"Yes aunty"
We took the shoes and brought them to the counter as my aunt placed the shoes on the counter an aura spread all around. I put one of my plastic bags on the floor.
"How much are you selling them for," enquired my aunt in a jojoish manner.
"Do you like them," replied the shopkeeper in a jojoish manner.
"No, they aren't that good, just fine"
Hah, she said something else to me.
"Aunt but you s--"
"Shh not now"
"Hmph- well these are very costy but for you I'll bring it down to 3000 paisas"
"Come on bring it down, thats too much for this stuff"
" I'm afraid can't do so"
"I saw the same piece being sold for lesse price at another store"
"I assure you, this piece is one of its kind. The one you saw must have been a cheap copy"
But we never went to another shoe shop besides this
"Lower the price and I'll refer your shop to my friends"
"Thanks for your kindness but no"
My Aunt's face was nonchalant as if she were putting on a poker face for shopping. The old keeper kept smiling.
"2000 paisas last offer"
"I must decline"
My aunt turned back. I thought we were going to another store then I saw her face . Aunt's teeth were crackling and her eyes wide open.
Why does she want to bargain so much, maybe to help our budget. Now, it seemed the option of bargaining is definitely closed to us. Honestly, aunt should just buy it, its not like we can't afford it.
Aunt had quite a depressed look on her face and the shopkeeper was smirking. It didn't seem like she'd be able to lower his prices.
"There's too much inflation, everything is pricey lower it down"
And it isn't pricey for the old shopkeeper?
"Ma'am, I also have to feed my family," he smirked.
All hope had been lost--
Then the shopkeeper took his metal ruler and bisected my aunt or that is what would happen if I were writing a battle manga.
Then my aunt said,"I'm leaving!".
All of a sudden her temperament changed and so did the shopkeeper's. Its as if they changed roles.
"Wait come back"
Oh I get it, he doesn't get much customers as the street is not that busy.
"Are ya gonna lower the price," she smirked.
"Never, my prices are totally fair".
My aunt turned back and began walking.
"Ok,ok, 2000 paisas"
The shopkeeper had admitted defeat. When aunt took the shoes and walked out, her face told me that it wasn't for the budget, it was for the game. She didn't care what the price was even if the price was 2000 paisas, she would have bargained to buy it cheaper.
We had only walked a few steps that I realized that my plastic bag was still in the shop so I hurried back. When not much distance was left between me and the shop I heard.
"Amateur, bought a 1000 paisas piece for 2000 paisas"
Today's winner: Old Shopkeeper
I went in the shop picked up the plastic bag. The shopkeeper was white as a snake. Guess bargaining affects both the customer and the keeper.
I caught up to my aunt and decided not to spill the beans after all it's the idea of winning that made her happy. So why not just let her be.
When we met up with my mom she bragged about her purchase. I did feel weird but ruining her moment wouldn't be nice.
We got in the car and headed back home. Grandpa was holding a wrapped box, he gave it to me. I quickly opened the box up. It was a ps5, best day of my life.
