Chapter 4:

Death is mercy

Distortion's Game

— It's night already. We're not gonna just let this murderer alive, will we? — gyaru

— She's right, guys-

As he spoke, the bully guy sneezed. He was now unfrozen, but all that ice brought a cold to his body.

— ... If we keep her alive, she'll kill us, even indirectly. By the way, you said you were frozen, right? How did you not catch a cold?

He looked at the bully girl. She posed confidently.

— Maybe my immune system is stronger than yours.

— She probably had the flu or something recently. — Kamado

— Hey, triangle, don't reveal my secrets!

— I mean, you have your uniform on, but you refuse to take it off your waist. You're the type of girl to say something like "I like cold weather. I can take it.".

— H-How did you know that?

— It's written on your face. You're too proud to admit defeat.

— T-That's not-

— Now you're thinking I'm too dangerous for you. You know, there are people here I cannot read so easily. But you're predictable.

— A-Are you challenging me?

— To kill me? Yeah, I dare you.

The girl glared at him furiously, trying to contain herself.

— You're playing with fire, little boy. If I place my hands on your neck, you're gone.

— Am I not playing with ice? You were like zero degrees moments ago, now you're hotter than a furnace.

She grabbed the collar of his shirt and threatened to punch him in the face. He smiled smugly. She finally realized what he was trying to do and looked at the others. They were assessing her short tempered behavior. She violently released his shirt.

— Just to make one thing clear, people. If I kill someone, I'll make it obvious. I'm not a coward like that piece of shit.

She was talking about Urihime, who was sitting in the corner of the classroom. Her smile was covered by a grey duct tape. Her arms were tied behind her back with ropes.

— Alright guys, let's get some real rest. The ice girl is about to fall asleep. I don't want her to stumble and freeze everyone in the way. — bully guy

— I-I'm not... sleepy... — ice

— Does your power have anything to do with sleeping as well? — pink

— Y-Yes... it demands that I sleep a lot more than normal...

— So you feel even more tired now... I know how that feels... — depressed

— It will certainly be difficult to factor this into our alibis. Speaking of this, did you find any clues about the redhead? — pink

— More or less, I guess. All I could find was that she vanished completely. — gyaru

— Could she have become invisible, like me? — airhead

— I don't think that's the case. The email said the footprints were impossible to erase, unless someone decides to walk with their hands.

— What if she can fly? She wouldn't need to touch anything. — nerd guy

— Wait, that's weird. Did you start tracking steps when we got our powers, or did steps start recording after that? — pink

— Now that you talk about it... — gyaru

She took her cell phone out of her pocket and saw the email.

— It says here that the starting point of my power was that moment. So I think the footprints started recording after that.

— This is really suspicious. Quick, scan this classroom. Did the redhead's footprints start here or outside?

She looked carefully at the ground, trying to differentiate one step from the other. She walked towards the door and opened it. She left for a few seconds, then returned.

— You're right, this is strange. There are no steps anywhere. Actually, when I went to look out for her, I couldn't find any either.

— Unless her power forces her to fly all the time, I don't think she could get rid of all her footprints. — nerd girl

— Aren't we forgetting something? What if her power just counters the tracking? Like, erasing any trails. — bully girl

— I don't think that's how it works. Our powers seem to have a synergy with each other, and not oppose each other. — Kamado

— Speaking of that, we don't know each other's powers yet. How about we introduce ourselves? — bully guy

— You just want to give us nicknames. I don't think saying our powers out loud is a good idea. The next killer will have an advantage and target their biggest inconvenience. — pink

— That's not true! There will be no other killer! We're all friends, aren't we? — airhead

— Really? Two of our classmates died just today. What makes you think there will be no other assassin? Even the green hair said we should suspect each other. She's a killer, she knows how killers think.

— You were the one who solved the case. Now you're believing a murderer's words? — nerd guy

— He's right, pink. You're just making us suspect you. I'm not saying I suspect you, though. — Hogure

— I think he's just warning us. We simply cannot trust each other too much. — Misota

— This is the end... we're all gonna die... but the worst of all: we're all gonna suffer... — depressed

— Calm down, girl. I said everything would be fine. — Hogure

— Anyway, let's just call each other by whatever we feel like. As for powers, I don't care who reveals theirs, but I won't reveal mine until necessary. — pink

— Pink, how did you know something happened to the redhead? She could have been the murderer. — gyaru

— Green hair confessed it, simple as that. And now we know she vanished for some reason, so she couldn't have escaped the crime scene without leaving footprints.

— I hope she's not lying...

— She's too proud to lie. She even told us the details of her murder. — Kamado

— Alright, back to the point. How could she have disappeared? — pink

— Her power is obviously the reason. Now we need to discover it. — nerd guy

— Gyaru, did you see the bathroom? There may be evidence there. — Kamado

— Ah, I forgot about that! Thanks for reminding me, triangle.

The gyaru took out another phone from her pocket.

— There was a phone on the bathroom sink.

— Wait, really? How did you forget something that important?

— Does anyone recognize it? — pink

Nobody said anything.

— It's hers, certainly. Natalie's and Yako's are inside their pocket.

— It's locked. Green hair was right, nobody leaves their phone unlocked these days. — gyaru

— I do! — airhead

— You really shouldn't... — Kamado

— If her phone is here, it means that she couldn't get it for some reason. — pink

— If she left the phone in the sink, it means that she forgot it there. — gyaru

— Perhaps she left it there and came back. Then, her power started working and she disappeared forever. — nerd guy

— I don't think it's permanent... — nerd girl

— Everything is permanent except what we want it to be.

— That doesn't even make sense... — Misota

— But she's right, it can't be permanent. Almost all of our powers have a drawback. If she disappears forever, she can't kill or be killed. It's like cheating. — Hogure

— Anyway, I think that's all for today. Her power is still too mysterious for us, and there's nothing we can do. Our mate is almost dying over there. — bully guy

They looked at the ice girl. She was struggling to keep standing.

— Seriously, I think that's not healthy. — nerd girl

— You think?! She's never been healthy before, now she's a mummy! — bully girl

— Help her find a place to lay down. We'll need to bring the futons here. — pink

— Wait, what? Are you suggesting that we sleep here? — bully girl

— We can't leave the school until midnight.

— I was talking about this classroom! There are two dead bodies here!

— We can use another room. But we still need to get rid of the bodies.

— I can do that. I'll carry them somewhere. — bully guy

— This school must have a morgue. That's the perfect place to leave them. — nerd girl

— Alright, see ya later.

He took Yako's body first and left the room.

— People, follow me. I have a good idea of where to sleep. — pink

Ice girl was left behind, since she needed some sleep. The others followed him to a dining hall.

— Are you hungry at this hour? — Kamado

— No, but this a good place to place our futons. It's large and we can all sleep in one room.

— But there are other spacious places, like the gym. — Hogure

— We'll need to gather here to have lunch and dinner anyway. It makes things easier for us.

— But we also need to use the bathroom and change ourselves. — nerd girl

— I suggest that we have some rules, because of that. Whenever somebody wants to leave the dining hall there must be at least another person awake. That way, the other serves as a witness.

— I guess that works, but how will we ensure nobody leaves in the night? — Misota

— That can't be helped. We'll need to use the bathroom sometimes.

— What about the kitchen? There are dangerous tools there. — nerd guy

— We'll keep it locked, of course. We just need the master key.

— I... I can find the key... — depressed

She left to search for it.

After almost an hour of tidying up the place, they were done. There weren't enough futons, so half of them had to sleep on the cafeteria chairs or pillows they found in the storage room.

Ice girl was the first to sleep. Tired, they all went to sleep as well.

In the middle of the night, redhead was walking in a corridor. It was next to the front door, so she decided to check on it.

There were a lot of chairs and tables blocking the door. The hoodie guy was sliced in half, next to the broken window.

Not so entire classroom
