Chapter 6:

White Canvas~ Kessel

We With Wings

The Alura Kingdom lies at the coast of rainforest. It is perhaps the largest kingdoms on the continent. A PeregrinefalconFolk flies overhead. I see a Flyingfishfolk jump in the water. They were unique. Unlike the rest of us, they were inspired by something that glides not flies. They can fly and breathe underwater. The good swimmers too. As a Mothfolk I can see in the dark myself. My best friend Aquarius is a ButterflyFolk. She can change the colors of her wings. Make them almost completely transparent, or even make them look like they have eyes. It’s fascinating to watch. She’s dragging me away again.

“Where are we going this time?”

“Art gallery.” I’m not surprised. Butterflyfolk love their art. So she says, and her more than most. We met at her castle. She was the second in line for the thrown of a Butterflyfolk village. I was a diplomat for a group of Mothfolk. She showed me her home, and we’ve been inseparable since. Recently, we decided to quit our jobs and moved the biggest kingdom in the world. So the brochures say. She is pursuing a job as an artist, and I am pursuing my dream job of becoming an accountant. Aquarius found work quickly but that’s not a surprise. She’s very talented. “Come see.” he drags me through all of the gallery. Then I see it a mural. Pale white wings like mine, and two blue butterfly wings like hers over a sea of rainforest leaves.

“Do you like it?”

“I do.” I say.

“I don’t know. It’s not as good as mine.” A voice from behind me says. A HawkFolk. I haven’t seen their work. Still, I say,

“It’s better than yours.”

“You want to start something hatchling.” I’m short for my age, but I’m no hatchling. Aquarius ducks behind me. It’s after me leave they come up to us again. They look enraged. So I sock them one. Aquarius grabs my hand and we fly off.

“What were you thinking?” She asks.

“I have no regrets.” I say. She shakes her had. We stop and have dinner at a fancy restaurant she likes. Then it’s time for the reveal. With the gallery open to the public, I watch as people admire her work. She pulls me to the front.

“Kessel. My freind here. She’s the inspiration for this piece. She’s my inspiration.”
