Chapter 39:
The Honest Warrior in a World of Lies
None of it was adding up. Sure, Makoto believed Feng; he believed that something had led to Shinsuke's death, but he still wasn't entirely sure if it was caused by Albus. After all, what if 'he wouldn't let go' meant that Albus had accidentally hurt Shinsuke or let him get hurt, and felt terrible because of it?
When Makoto got to his room, he saw Chihiro and Ryu sitting inside making rice at the small fireplace at the far right side of the room.
"How'd it go?" Chihiro asked when he noticed Makoto walk in.
"Uhh," Makoto stammered a bit, "I guess it was productive. Feng told me that Albus was the one behind Shinsuke's death, but it didn't really make sense to me. I mean, from what I know, they were best friends, so why would Albus do that?"
Ryu stood up. "It could have been a lot of things," Ryu said. "Mind control, bribing, maybe someone forced him. We'll never know for sure since the only witness was the victim."
That night, Makoto decided he was going to try something. After the incident with Shiro a while back, he had learned that the older Paladin seemingly never slept. So, Makoto was going to attempt to stay awake until he saw Shiro go to sleep. Then, he was going to try to leave the room to find out more about what happened the day of Shinsuke's death.
"Good night," Ryu said as he put out the last candle that had been lit.
"G'night~" Chihiro said with a yawn as he covered his head with his covers.
The two feel asleep relatively quickly, but Makoto stayed awake.
'Alright,' Makoto thought with determination. 'Now I just need to stay awake til Shiro gets here and falls asleep. But I have to pretend like I'm asleep so he doesn't get suspicious.'
... but that was easier said than done. After all, it had been kind of a long day, and Makoto had eaten not long ago, so his body really wanted him to sleep. But he kept saying no, because he just had to see if Shiro actually slept or not. After all, who would be stressed enough to not sleep other than someone who knew Albus or had seen what exactly happened when Shinsuke died?
Finally, after what seemed like forever, Makoto heard the door creak open and Shiro step inside. 'He's finally inside!' Makoto thought as he quickly closed his eyes to pretend to be asleep. He heard the rustling of Shiro's coat, and then the sound of Shiro sitting down on his bed. Out of sheer curiosity, Makoto opened one eye to see what was going on.
"*yaawn*, it's been quite a day, eh?" Shiro whispered to himself.
"Well, at least Obscurus was better today," he mumbled before lying down under his covers.
'Obscurus again?' Makoto thought, trying not to move to much even though he was quite confused. 'He mentioned Obscurus and Albus that time, but afterwards, he just said he must've been delirious.'
But Makoto couldn't think about this for too long, because soon, Shiro seemed to be asleep.
'Now's my chance!!' Makoto thought as he got out of his bed as quietly as he could, while also trying to find something to make it look like he was still asleep in his bed. He walked slowly and quietly over to the door, and opened it slowly, hoping it wouldn't be too loud.
But just as he was about to walk out, he heard Shiro suddenly jolt upright.
"Shinsuke!" he shouted.
Makoto ran quickly inside the closet to hide.
"Shinsuke, why?? Why was I so weak back then?!" Shiro muttered to himself.
Makoto looked out from behind the closet door, but he could only see an outline of Shiro. That didn't matter though, because he was already trying to figure out multiple things: one, why was Shiro talking like he had known Albus when he had told the three of them earlier that he had only joined after the incident? Was Shinsuke some kind of god-like figure in the Apex Tower?
And two, was he going to have to stay inside the closet all night?
'I almost wanna go over there and make sure he's OK,' Makoto thought, 'but if he saw me come out of the closet, wouldn't that make him suspicious?'
"Shinsuke... Shinー wait," Shiro suddenly sat up straight. "I know what I have to do."
Shiro got up quickly and rushed outside the room. Makoto followed him quietly, making sure he wasn't noticed.
He followed Shiro until the older Paladin went inside a small room that Makoto followed him into.
It was small, but there was something that caught Makoto's eye and scared him: a coffin.
'What's a coffin doing in here?!' he thought, terrified by the eerie box.
Shiro sat down in front of the coffin, his head at the same level as it, since it was on a platform of some kind.
"Hey," Shiro said, as if speaking to someone Makoto couldn't see, "it's me again."
"I came to ask you something," Shiro continued after a momentary silence. "It's about, uhh... that day.
"So," he said, "I know that I didn't do it, but... I still feel guilty. So, uhm... can you... tell Feng what happened?"
Makoto didn't understand. It didn't make any sense. Why was Shiro talking like this? Had he known Albus as well? Had he known Shinsuke? Was he lying about everything??
'I gotta figure this out,' Makoto thought. 'But I can't let Shiro know I was here.'
Makoto got up very slowly and quietly and went back to his room.
He didn't know what he was going to do the next day, but he did know he was going to try to talk to Shiro about Shinsuke. He had to at least try.
