Chapter 2:
Tell Me Savita!
The kids scrolled through the moonlit hallways and silent rooms. The building felt chilly and empty. Their footsteps echoed throughout the silent building as they ascended to the third floor. They walked towards the upcoming bathrooms with their hearts racing. The anticipation of witnessing a spirit could freak anyone out. As they arrived at the bathroom on the third floor, they reached a slight predicament.
"Guys or girls?" one asked, staring at the boys' and girls' bathrooms side by side.
"Savita's a girl, so it's got to be girls! Hehe." Another replied.
Though the reason sounded believable, it could not hide their true intentions. I guess high school boys will always be boys. The boys creepily chuckled as they opened the girls' bathroom door.
___
The door creaked as it invited them into the dark, eerily bathroom. The atmosphere felt scarier in the room than the entire building, as if the spirit was nearby. Feeling the eeriness in the air, Darin's body refused to stop shaking.
Since the boys barely had vision, one decided to take out a tall white wax candle and a match to light it up. With some idea of direction, the boys approached the bathroom sinks. They placed the candle on one of the sinks and stood curiously. "Ok, now what?"
Hirato explained, "Now, we have to gather around in a circle near a mirror." The groups followed Hirato's orders as he continued explaining.
He added, "The spirit likes to communicate through mirrors. So, we had to draw in the mirror with a black Sharpie. We draw four boxes on each mirror and label them yes and no adjacently. Next, we draw a dot in the center."
After the boys had drawn the dots and boxes with yes or no, Darin felt uncomfortable about this whole thing. A couple of boys sneaked into school and drew on the mirrors in the girls' bathroom. They just added vandalism on top of their trespassing crime. Forget studying, if they get caught, it's over for them!
The boys gazed at their creation in the clear mirror. Hirato nodded his head in approval and continued his explanation. "Alright, after we do that, everyone huddle up and chant the following."
The boys huddled around the marked mirror, gazing at it. "Savita, Savita, Tell me Savita." They eagerly chanted.
Darin felt uncomfortable summoning a spirit. He huddled with the boys, his voice quivering. He forcefully shut his eyes and followed the chant. “Sa…vi…ta, Sav…a, Te..ll me Sav…ta.”
The group chanted the exact phrase three times. After the third chant, the boys stopped speaking and stood silently. They felt no fear, only amazed by what they witnessed.
Hearing the sudden silence, Darin’s curiosity peaked. “What happened? Why did everyone stop?” Darin carefully peeked at the boys, who were fixated on the mirror.
___
Darin turned his attention to the marked mirror and noticed something odd. “The block dot in the middle is glowing a blood color!”
The centered black dot on the mirror resonated a bloody red and started moving on his own. As it mysteriously moved, it left no trail of marker behind.
“What’s happening!?”
The red dot randomly spazzed out around the mirror, almost trying to calibrate. As the dot moved, the lights and stall doors mysteriously shifted on their own. The boys stood in awe, filled with a sense of wonder and amazement at the supernatural occurrence.
In typical horror movie fashion, the random objects shifted on their own, which meant that the killer was nearby or approaching them. Also, nine out of ten times in the movie, the killer ended up hunting down their victim and taking them out.
Darin fell into deep thought, mentally curling himself up in a ball from his knowledge of scary movies. “This is it! She’s gonna kill us! I don’t wanna die!!”
Seconds later, the room gradually returned to its normal state. The red dot, which had previously been flashing erratically, slowly moved back towards the center, eventually fading back into its original steady state.
The boy's eyes darted around the room, filled with curiosity and fascination for the upcoming event.
Hirato's cheeks flushed red, and his eyes sparkled as he stared at the centered dot. “It actually worked! People said that after summoning her, the dot would return to the center. Now we can start asking Savita questions.”
The marked dark mirror, the melting wax candles under the mirror, the chilling sensation of a spirit—Darin had the right attitude with his terrified attitude. However, the mood in the room brightened as their excitement dispelled the previous eeriness.
“She’s here?!” Darin felt his nerves kicking in as he bit his fingernails. “Crap! What happens if someone asks the wrong question? We don’t want her to attack. What kind of question should we ask?”
One of the boys, Cartel, stepped forward and volunteered himself to break the ice with the spirit. “Umm... Ms. Savita, or spirit, what you want. Will I end up... marrying a hot babe in the future?”
The boys turned their attention to the mirror, awaiting her response. There was a pause after he asked his question, almost giving her time to register it.
Shortly after, the dot began heading towards one of the boxes labelled: yes.
“Eee, she actually responded! Let’s hurry up and get out of here.”
The spirit Savita was famous for her fortune-telling abilities. Nobody knew how it worked, but her assumptions were always right. Because of this...
Cartel cheered in excitement, throwing an small uppercut in the air. “Woo! Yes! I wonder who my wife looks like. I hope its someone like Gigi Hadid.”
A skeptical look stretched across the other boy’s face. “Yeah, buddy, in your dreams.”
“Shut up! Can’t a boy dream?”
Hirato interrupted their pointless argument, acting like the ringleader of this whole operation. “Let’s keep asking her questions.”
“Oh, I have another question.” Cartel announced.
“No, you already went. I’ll ask one.” the other boy insisted.
After confirming that Savita could answer questions, the boys began bickering with each other and asked Savita more pointless questions.
Will I be rich? Will I go out with my high school crush? Will the Tottenham Spurs win a trophy? Savita had no time limit, so they asked and asked anything they could think of. The boy enjoyed their interaction with Savita: laughing at each other answers, being jealous over one’s future, etc.
___
The yapping came to a stop after an hour since they asked the first question. Class started in four hours, and they were still there. They had to leave soon. After all the jokes and stupid questions, Hirato smiles began fading. He spoke up towards the mirror, his eyes softened, “I have a question.”
There was an awkward pause in the air. Hirato did not want to spoil the mood by asking this question. However, deep down, his heart wanted to know. This was his only chance to ever know the truth. The warmth in his voice faded, and his energy shifted as the words flew out his mouth. “Will my mom and dad ever get back together?”
Hirato’s childhood shadowed his façade of happiness. His parents never got along. Especially his father, who would always show up drunk. His father’s drinking problem had been a problem for his family since he would abuse them often. They eventually got divorced, and the father began repenting for his actions. His parents have not talked ever since he left Hirato nine years ago.
The boys knew about Hirato's childhood and understood why he ask the sudden question. After registering the question, the dot slowly edged its way around the mirror. It crawled and crawled until it landed on a box labeled: no.
Hirato exhaled a sigh, disappointed by the answer. “I thought as much.” He forced a smile at the boys. “Oh well, at least I know." Trying to steer the attention elsewhere to brighten up the mood, Hirato asked, "Anyways, Darin do you have a final question before we head out.”
Darin's head tilted down, and his shoulders dropped, exhausted from panicking too much. He already had no time to study and did not have enough time to sleep for tomorrow's test. His body language and face screamed he just wanted to go home.
Since they were waiting on his question, Darin had no choice but to ask the most basic answer he could think of on the spot. “Do- Will I die in this year.”
“Huh? What kind of question is that?” The answer’s obviously gonna be no.”
They stared at the mirror, waiting for her answer. The response took longer than usual. However, after the dot moved to a “no” box, the boys paid no mind to the long pause.
“See, I told you. What a waste of a question.”
“Alright, let’s get out of here.” The boys began blowing out the candles and packing their belongings, leaving no trace of them anywhere. Hirato turned his head to Darin, “Hey Darin, could you erase the marker for me?”
“Okay.”
___
Darin grabbed some toilet paper from a stall and approached the mirror without hesitation as the boys headed towards the door. He looked up at the marked mirror and stared at his own sleepy reflection. “After I finish this, I can finally go home. Maybe it wasn’t as scary as I thought.”
Darin lifted his hand and wiped the mirror. But, just after one swipe with the toilet paper, his mind began seeing things. “Huh? What is that?”
