Chapter 3:

A Deeper Connection

When The Time Comes

The sun passed through the leaves of the hospital garden. Denise sat on a wooden bench, her heart racing as she watched Andrey pace excitedly, his hands moving as he recounted a childhood adventure. She couldn’t help but admire how the sunlight shined in his straight black hair, making him appear almost angelic. For the first time in a long while, she felt warmth —a feeling she had long since buried deep inside of her.

“And then I climbed the tree, higher and higher, until I thought I was invincible!” Andrey exclaimed, his fierce eyes sparkling with the thrill of the memory. “Of course, I fell. Landed right in the neighbor’s flower bed. Pretty sure I ruined Mrs. Thompson’s prize roses, but she couldn’t stay mad at me. I was just too charming!” He flashed her a grin, and Denise felt her lips twitch upward in response.

“Charming, huh?” she teased, leaning back against the bench. “More like reckless.”
“Maybe,” he said with  a playful smirk. “But sometimes you have to be a little reckless to feel alive, don’t you think?”

His words touched something inside of her. Denise had spent so much time dwelling on her illness and her limitations. But here was Andrey, encouraging her to live and to exist in the world.

As their conversation drifted to lighter topics—favorite movies and childhood crushes—Denise felt her walls begin to crack. She found herself laughing subtly as the cold feeling inside her was slowly melting under the warmth of his laughter and the way he made her feel.

“Okay, your turn,” Andrey said, nudging her playfully. “What’s your most embarrassing moment?”

Denise hesitated, her heart racing at the thought of sharing something personal. Vulnerability was a foreign concept to her, but something about Andrey’s soft gaze made her want to try. “I once tripped in front of my entire class during a presentation. I was so mortified that I just sat on the floor and laughed instead of getting up.”

Andrey burst into laughter. The sound of it was so good and infectious and Denise couldn't help but grin. “That’s awesome! See? You’re way more fun than you let on!”
For the first time, she was grateful for his presence—not just for the distraction he provided but for the way he made her feel alive.

But as the day drew to a close, Denise noticed Andrey seemed to tire for a moment. He paused and took a deep breath. “Just a sec, I need to catch my breath,” he said, giving her a reassuring smile.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” she asked, a hint of concern in her voice. “You seem a bit worn out.”

“Absolutely! Just a little tired from being outside,” he replied, brushing off her worry. “I’ll be right back; I just need a moment.”
Denise watched him walk away, feeling a small knot of worry in her stomach. But when he returned, he was smiling again, and she felt relaxed.

“See? Good as new!” he said, and Denise couldn’t help but believe him.

In the following days, Denise found herself looking forward to Andrey’s visits more than she had ever anticipated. They explored the hospital grounds, sharing stories and dreams. She discovered a new side of herself—one that craved connection rather than isolation.

One afternoon, while they sat under the tree, Andrey turned to her, his expression serious. “You know, Denise, life is too precious to waste. We can’t predict what’s coming, but we can choose how we live.”
Denise’s heart raced at his words, the reality of what is going to happen in the future hits her. She wanted to believe in that truth, to feel as if she could seize the moments they had left. “But what if—”

“Stop,” he interrupted gently, grasping her hand. “No ‘what ifs.’ Just us. Right here. Right now."

In that moment, Denise felt a mix of gratitude and fear. She squeezed his hand while smiling gently at him “Okay. Just us.”
As they sat together, surrounded by the trees, Denise realized that she was falling for him. Each shared laugh, each whispered secret, and every lingering touch deepened the bond that was forming between them. Yet, at the back of her mind, a negative voice keeps reminding her of her limitations

Denise tried to push the thoughts aside, focusing instead on the way Andrey laughs and how it made her feel lighter. She wanted to memorize every detail—the way his fierce eyes lit up when he talked about his dreams, the warmth of his hand in hers, and the way he made the world feel a little less heavy.

In the evening, as they sat side by side, the sun started to set, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. Andrey turned to her with a  serious yet soft expression. “You know, I’ve always believed that love is the greatest adventure we can journey on. It’s what makes this life worth living, no matter how short or painful it may be.”

Denise’s heart raced at his words, fully realizing what Andrey means. “And what if we’re not meant to have a happy ending?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “What if this is just a momentary escape from the realities we face?”
“Even if it’s just for a moment, it’s worth it,” Andrey replied, his gaze was  full of passion. “You deserve to feel alive, Denise. You deserve to love and be loved, even if it’s for a short time.”

“But what if—”
“Stop it,” he said, his tone firm yet tender. "What did I say about that? Just lean on me please. Stop bearing everything by yourself".

After saying that, Andrey started coughing a bit. Worried, Denise tried to touch him but he stopped her saying he was fine and excused himself to take a breather.

A few minutes, Andrey came back with a small box, his plump lips curving into a mischievous grin. “I have a surprise for you!”
Denise raised an eyebrow, surprised as she eyes the box in his hand. “What is it?”
“Open it and find out!” he said, his excitement is contagious.

She carefully opened the box to reveal a beautiful silver bracelet decorated with tiny charms—one shaped like a heart, another like a star, and a third like a crescent moon. “It’s beautiful!” she gasped, touched by the beauty of it.

“It’s a reminder,” Andrey said, his eyes sparkling. “The heart for love, the star for dreams, and the moon for the light in the darkness. Whenever you look at it, remember that you’re not alone in this. I’m here with you.”

Tears welled in her eyes as she slipped the bracelet onto her wrist. “Thank you, Andrey. This means so much to me.”
He leaned closer, lowering his voice. “You mean so much to me.”

In that moment, Denise felt a rush of emotions—joy, fear, love—all mixing together inside of her. She wanted to tell him how she felt, to confess that she was falling for him, but the words caught in her throat. Instead, she simply squeezed his hand, conveying everything she couldn’t say.
