Chapter 1:
Just Chefs
At 5:59AM, Yukito was asleep in his apartment.
Then at 6, his alarm went off.
He yawned, stretched, turned off his alarm, and then went back under the covers. "I don't even have a job right now..." he mumbled.
But then his alarm clock beeped again. LOUDER (and more annoying) THAN BEFORE.
He shot his arm out of the covers and smacked the alarm clock's button.
"Shuddup, I'm not getting up right nowwww," he mumbled again.
And it didn't beep anymore.
But he woke up again 2 hours later because of a text he got on his phone.
*ding*
"MMMMM Whaaaaat," he mumbled, still half asleep (that's a lie, he was 3 quarters asleep).
The text message was from his friend and neighbor, Jun Ueda.
Jun:
≪hey Yuki, u up?≫
Yukito rubbed his eyes and sat up. "Oh, it's Jun," he mumbled.
Yuki:
≪yea, hru?≫
Jun:
≪I'm good :)
Maria & I are going to the coffee place
See u there when ur interview is done?≫
It was then that Yukito freaked out. He had forgotten about his job interview.
"SHIT" Yukito jumped out of bed and ran around like a mad chicken.
'I FORGOT IT WAS TODAY!!!!' he internally screamed as he ran.
Outside, the bus was about to leave(it was 8:30AM by now, and the interview was at 10, sharp).
"WAIT UUUUUUP!!!" Yukito shouted at the bus.
Luckily for him, the bus driver saw and decided to wait.
***
When he finally got to the restaurant where he was going to be interviewed, it was 9AM. He was lucky as heck, since this was a 5 star restaurant, and they said to not be late under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES (their exact wording).
'I made it~' he sighed with relief.
He walked quickly inside and to the interview room: the kitchen. He had no idea why it was there of all places, but he went there anyways.
Inside, he saw 9 other chefs, there for the interview, and the head chef standing in front of them. It felt pretty tense in the room, with the head chef staring at the chefs intensely. Yukito went to stand with the others, and out of the corner of his eye, saw a really handsome guy with black hair and brown eyes standing next to him on his right. He looked quiet and reserved, but that was part of the reason why Yukito thought he was handsome.
'Woah, who is he?' Yukito thought. 'He looks so coolー'
"Alright then," the head chef said firmly. "Welcome to Soleil de Ciel, you inexperienced college kids."
'Geez, rude much?!' Yukito thought.
"You'll all be interviewed at the same time," the head chef continued, "so listen closely: you're all gonna bake a custard. When you're done, I'll look at your dish, and if it's up to my standards, you'll be one of five people I'll accept."
He looked right at Yukito and wrinkled his nose.
"But if it's bad, the door is over there," he said sternly in a low voice, point at the exit with a ladle.
The room got even more tense, when a hand shot up from the small crowd.
"Hey head chef!!" shouted a short, preppy girl. "Where's the recipe?"
At that, the head chef furrowed his brow, wrinkled his nose, and gripped his ladle til his knuckles turned white.
"THERE IS NO RECIPE!" he barked. "You're making it from memory!!!"
At that, Yukito felt like his knees had turned to jello. He had no idea how to bake a custard.
'Shhhhhhhhit,' he thought. 'I'm dead.'
But the handsome young man seemed completely unfazed. He looked completely chill.
'Why is this man so damn awesome??' Yukito thought. 'He's chill even though this crazy chef guy is screaming at us!!!'
Afterwards, the head chef started the timer and the chefs got to baking their custards. Only thing was...
... Yukito was making an omelette.
***
(About an hour later...)
"Alright, let me see your custards," the head chef said, walking up to the line of chefs.
He went to the right side of the group first and moved left from there. He approved of the dishes, saying things like "very good" and "excellent" while nodding. When he reached the handsome man, his eyes widened and he nodded vigorously. "Excellent, perfect even!" he said.
Yukito's heart was thumping so loud from the stress that he was sure the head chef could hear it, but he went up to Yukito anyways. And...
He gave him the stink eye.
"This is an omelette," the head chef said.
"Yeah," Yukito said sheepishly.
"I told you to make a custard," the head chef said, his voice rising.
"Y-yeah," Yukito said. "Y'see, I kinda don't exactly know how to make a custardー"
"GET THE HELL OUTTA HERE" the head chef shouted.
"At least give him a chance," the handsome man cut in.
Yukito flinched. 'HE'S VOUCHING FOR MEEEEEE' he internally screamed.
"If you don't at least taste it," the man said, "you've just lost your best chef."
The head chef balled up his fists and his face turned red. "FINE" he shouted, stabbing the fork into the omelette and taking a huge bite.
There was an intense silence, broken only by the head chef's loud chewing. "Hmph," he huffed. "It's decent.
"But I'm warning you, Akiyama," the head chef snarled at Yukito. "If you so much as come into work with your shoes UNTIED, you're fired."
"O-OK!" Yukito said, straightening up quickly.
"Alright then, the chef's I pick are Xian Fei Ling, Ishigami Kurogane, Mike White, Yukito Akiyama, and Quinn Williams."
***
Later that day, Yukito was waiting for his friends outside of a cafe.
"Hey, Yuki!!" Jun called, coming up to him with Maria who grinned and waved in Yukito's direction.
"Hey you guys!" Yukito said, grinning.
Inside the cafe, after they had ordered, Maria began talking. "Alright, so did you get accepted??" she asked excitedly.
"Yep, I did!" Yukito beamed. "I don't exactly know how, but I got in!"
"Congrats!" Jun said, patting his friend on the back. "Now you can be a master chef!!"
"Yep!" Yukito said with a smile.
Though while they ate and drank their boba, Yukito started thinking about the handsome man. He had heard someone ー he assumed they had been Quinn ー saying that he was Ishigami Kurogane. He had been so chill the whole time, and it was still really strange to him.
"Hey, Yuki?" Maria said, yoinking Yukito's head out of the clouds.
"Uhh, yeah?" Yukito replied.
"So," Maria started, "was there anyone there that like, really stood out or anything?"
'Ishigami Kurogane~' Yukito's brain said.
"Uhhh, not really," Yukito said aloud. "Though the head chef was a bit of a jerk."
"Like how jerk-y?" Jun asked.
"Like, a seven out of ten," Yukito laughed.
"Ay-ay-ay, that's pretty high, considering how easy-going you usually are," Maria said, laughing as well.
That night, Yukito thought about the events of the day while lying in bed. It didn't really make much sense, how he had gotten the job so easily even though he had ZERO idea how to make a custard.
'He kinda reminds me of Yama from Doves,' Yukito thought, shifting to his right side.
Doves was a romcom drama that Yukito had watched a couple weeks before, and Yama was the love interest.
'Oh well,' Yukito thought with a yawn. 'I guess I'll just go to sleep for now, and maybe I'll talk to this Ishigami Kurogane...'
