Chapter 15:

The familiar and unfamiliar screams.

Tsurihito's Bride

"How stupid can he be...", Teiji muttered as he looked at the speedboat that zoomed across the sea like a fish. "Katsuhito has always been like this... blinded by her. I can't believe that old granny told something like that to him! I know that she could see his loyalty for her in his eyes, and her knowing that this might kill him... what the heck is she trying to achieve??"

He looked around. The lighthouse caught his attention. Pressing hard on the ground, he ran with full force towards it.

I have never driven a speedboat before, and I didn't know how to drive either. I don't know how I am going to maneuver this. For now I am just trying to adjust to the steering wheel, which is taking most of my energy. The fuel tank is full too, but I am afraid it won't be if I continue to press on the gas like this the whole time.

I looked around the open sea. It felt weird. It was a similar night, I could see the blood moon. But this time the mysterious sea felt calming, felt welcoming. It is weird, the sea that devoured my friend's and my loved ones is now welcoming me with open hands.

I was almost blinded by the sudden spotlight I was hit with. It was so intense, it felt like morning. It was from the left, and I know the culprit. Somebody has gone up the lighthouse and turned it on, flashing it towards my direction. I have to thank him for that.

But that beam of light was there just for a few moments, before it dimmed out and disappeared without me realising. Something was wrong with the environment that I have encountered. The blood moon is gone, there were fogs now that weren't before, and I could see nothing. Where will I go now? What was happening? There isn't supposed to be such dense fogs at such a random part of the ocean. This is unnatural.

I heard creaks and clacking of wood from a distance. The waves were dancing with it, as if both were one. I contracted my eyelids to see what it was, the dark figure that was slowly becoming visible, but not quite that visible.

I was shocked. My heart is now beating heavily. It was a ship, with sails. It sounds weird, but in this time these ships are not found. The sound of crackles gave off that it was made completely out of wood, just like a medieval ship. But I could not see it.

On instinct my steering wheel automatically turned towards the ship. I pressed hard on the gas, trying to prove my hypothesis. I am a bit nervous, but I want to know. Is this a part of my imagination or reality? Is the myth really true or just a myth? The thing that killed my friends was this or not, I want to know. But I just couldn't seem to catch up to it. It was going further away.

The ship in front of me dissolved into the mists before I could get my answers. What was that ship after all?

Did my eyes deceive me? I don't recall there having any islands near Fujigawa...

"What the heck...", I couldn't say any more. The heck was that? Instincts told me not to go there, but my body isn't listening. I feel like... I have lost control over it. There is too much to process... the ship, the sudden mist, the island. Everything is so out of place.

My speedboat held my hope, as I bumped into the island after what felt like an eternity. It had two seats, which somehow gave me hope.

As I stepped on the island, I felt my legs go numb. The island was filled with dense greens, and none of them had any dry leaves. All of them were moist, dripping with water. The soil was damp and bouncy, except for that part that had the roots of the trees beneath it.

The jungle was surprisingly calm, soft and quiet. There were no signs of life anywhere, the trees looked dead too in a way.

Or that would've been my initial thought, until I heard the painful screams of cry from the center of the island, of whom I recognised and I didn't.

Some of them were the screams of my friends...
