Chapter 6:

Trapped

Sweet Nightmares Confection Shop

Chris grabs the muffin as he clambers to his feet, running to the next aisle over, since the closest one is now blocked by the toppled shelf. The peppermint rumbles behind him, turning  down the aisle in pursuit of the intruder. Perhaps from having run into multiple shelves, the crusher's turns are not smooth. This, combined with Chris' athleticism, allows him to stay ahead of the monster. He heads right, down the next main avenue. A few seconds later the crusher wobbles laboriously around the corner after him.

Sprinting in a zigzag pattern through the warehouse aisles, Chris bears to the right, making his way toward the wall to the right of the door he came through when he entered this place. After all the running that he has been doing, Chris is sweating in his heavy winter clothing. Huffing and puffing, he comes around the corner and enters the last main aisle on this side of the warehouse. The dull metal barrier rises high into the air next to him, ribbed with girders that are evenly spaced to support the metal roof above. The corner of the building is ahead of him, where the wall on his right meets the wall at the back.

Chris has slowed down slightly as he inspects the wall, but the increasingly loud reverberations echoing throughout the building kick him into gear. He starts to run again, desperately looking for a door or anything that will help him escape from the warehouse. He passes the last main thoroughfare running perpendicular to the aisles, meaning that the only place left to turn is at the back wall. The peppermint crusher turns the corner far behind Chris, having lost a lot of ground from all the constant maneuvering. Now, it gains speed substantially as it accelerates down the straightaway.

Not panicking yet, Chris finally reaches the corner of the warehouse, turning left and expecting to be able to start zigzagging back amongst the shelves. Instead, for the first time that he has seen in the entire warehouse, the shelves in this section run perpendicular to all the other shelves in the warehouse. As a result, the shelves make an elongated "L"-shape, with Chris standing on the outside corner. Now, panic starts to sink in as he runs alongside the incredibly long shelf, hoping for a break in the rack or a door. The peppermint crusher makes its unsteady turn down the aisle, before rumbling toward Chris. The rumbling seems to be constant, even through the monster's off-balance, and previously quiet, turn.

Chris' eyes snap from the unending shelf, to the wall, to the end of the aisle. He isn't sure if he'll make it, but he has no other choice. Sweat pours down his body, his hair completely soaked from the stuff. He runs as hard as he can, but his last hope is finally crushed.

At the end of the aisle ahead of him, another peppermint appears. This monster candy bears green stripes and a white body and unlike its seemingly wounded counterpart, takes the corner in a smooth and steady motion.

Realizing that this is probably the point of the warehouse's layout, Chris curses angrily, looking back and forth between the two crushers. With no door in sight and no way between the shelf, he is out of options. But as the monsters thunder towards him at an incredible speed, he looks at the shelf again and finds his resolve.

Still clenching the muffin in one hand, he starts to clamber up the shelf. The peppermint crushers, in an attempt to stay on target, ram into the shelf and ride along it like a runaway car against a highway guardrail. The shelving rocks back from the sudden force.

While grappling for the next shelf Chris is buffeted by the peppermint's maneuver. He accidentally knocks over a large glass bowl full of gumballs, sending it plummeting to the floor where it shatters with a colorful explosion. He scrambles past crates filled with extra large candy canes on the next shelf, noticing that both ends of the canes have been sharpened into deadly points. Finally, he stands on the top rack of the shelf, balancing precariously on the narrow wooden structure. Intending to use the muffin grenade, he pulls the pin and starts to toss it overhead, but it's already too late.

With a massive smack that reverberates throughout the warehouse, the two monster wheels make contact with each other right next to Chris. The force sends the two monsters and the shelf flying in different directions. Like a tidal wave, it begins to tip over where Chris is perched, the fall rippling down to either end of the elongated unit. The sudden and overwhelming tipping motion causes him to fumble with the muffin, but he still manages to propel it away from him.

As the shelf tips over, it falls short of the aisles that run perpendicular to it. There is a cacophony of breaking glass, splintering wood, and other bizarre sounds. Chris happened to be positioned on the shelf in such a way that, when it eventually did slam to the ground, he fell down one of the perpendicular aisles. He rolls clumsily, trying to mitigate the amount of force being subjected to his body and smacks his head against one of the sturdy wooden posts.

As his consciousness fades, the noise of the toppled shelf and its various contents is suddenly eclipsed by an overwhelming explosion.
