Chapter 1:

The Shadowed city

Kage No Mana

The rain pounded the cobblestones of the capital, transforming the streets into a labyrinth of shifting shadows. Under the flickering light of the lampposts, each drop seemed to conceal secrets that only a keen eye could perceive.

Ryo stood silently beneath a porch, his tall silhouette wrapped in a long dark coat. His eyes scanned the rain-soaked street, capturing details invisible to the untrained observer. Behind him, Aria joined him, a faint smile on her lips.

— Did you find anything? she asked, her mana crackling lightly around her fingers. Her black hair was tied up in a neat bun, contrasting with the damp night.

Ryo didn't answer immediately. His gaze lingered on a half-broken window across the street, where a faint glimmer had caught his attention.

— Something feels off here.

— That's always what you say, Kael replied as he arrived, hands in his pockets, clearly tired. Another disappearance. Nothing extraordinary.

Ryo turned his head slightly, a barely perceptible smile tugging at his lips.

— Exactly, it's too... ordinary.

Kael sighed heavily, exasperated.

— So, did you find something unusual, or are you just trying to make our night longer?

Ryo stepped forward a few paces, crouching near the wet ground.

— Look here, the footprints. They're light, too light. As if the victim was lifted. No struggle, no visible resistance.

Aria crouched beside him, concentrating her mana on the ground. Her eyes glowed with a soft purple light.

— I see what you mean... but there's no trace of mana. That's impossible.

Kael stood up, frowning.

— If it's not mana, then what? Technology?

Ryo didn't reply immediately, his fingers barely grazing the ground.

— Or something else...

The silence that followed was broken by an unusual sound, a rustling in the air, like fabric brushing against itself. Ryo froze, squinting into the darkness beyond the street.

Suddenly, a figure emerged. It materialized from the shadows with an unsettling elegance. The man wore a bright red tuxedo that violently contrasted with the gray rain and the heavy atmosphere of the night. A silver mask hid his identity, and a wide-brimmed red hat obscured most of his features.

Aria and Kael reacted immediately, their manas crackling around them, ready for confrontation. Ryo, however, felt paralyzed. Not by fear, but by a deeply unsettling sensation. Something inside him stirred.

— I suppose you are the famous detectives, the man said in a deep, honeyed voice, removing his hat to reveal a face still cloaked in shadow. But I doubt you are prepared for what awaits you.

Kael stepped forward, fist charged with mana.

— Who are you?

The mysterious masked man let out a soft, almost mocking laugh.

— You can call me... The Purple Shadow.

He tilted his head slightly, the mask reflecting the flashes of mana from his adversaries.

— You won't find the answers to your questions in these alleys. The truth... lies elsewhere.

Ryo stood motionless, unable to tear his eyes away from the man in red. A sudden pain surged in his chest, like an invisible blade piercing his heart. He brought a hand to his torso, gasping, as the voice he sometimes heard in his dreams resonated again, louder and clearer than ever.

— You remember me, don't you?

His eyes widened. No, it couldn't be real. This demon he thought he had buried deep within himself... how could it manifest here, now?

— Ryo, Aria called, worried to see him so disturbed. What's wrong?

Ryo closed his eyes, trying to regain control, to calm the storm raging within him. But the voice persisted, darker, more threatening.

— Free me...

The impassive face of the masked villain turned toward Ryo, as if sensing what was happening inside him.

— Oh... interesting, he murmured.

He stepped closer, the water splashing under his glossy red shoes.

— Perhaps there is more in you than you let on.

Aria and Kael launched their spells, bolts of light and mana shooting toward the man. But he evaded them with a nearly supernatural fluidity, each movement perfectly calculated, elegant.

— You should really reassess your priorities, he said, stopping a few meters from Ryo, his silver mask gleaming in the rain. It's not me you should fear.

Ryo, still troubled by the voice within him, took a step back, his gaze locked on the man. Who was he really? And how did he seem to know this secret Ryo had long buried?

The Purple Shadow tilted his head slightly before vanishing in a flash of red light, leaving behind an atmosphere heavier than before.

Aria approached Ryo, concerned.

— Ryo, what's going on?

Ryo took a deep breath, his hand still on his chest.

— I... I don't know. But this was just the beginning.

He lowered his gaze, struggling against the voice still echoing in his mind. It was no longer time to hide. This secret that gnawed at him, this dark force threatening to destroy everything... he could no longer contain it.

— I need to tell you something... he began, his voice trembling.

Aria stepped closer, anxious.

— Ryo? What are you talking about?

Ryo finally raised his eyes, his features marked by inner pain.

— This isn't the first time this has happened. I... I carry a power... demonical. Something dark, something I cannot control.

A chilling silence fell over them. Aria and Kael stood frozen, their expressions darkening as they realized what Ryo had just admitted.

— What...? Kael breathed, his face pale. You're joking, right?

Ryo shook his head, his eyes betraying profound guilt.

— No. This demon has been sealed within me for a long time. I never spoke of it because I thought I could contain it... but tonight, I felt it closer than ever to breaking free.

Aria instinctively stepped back, her eyes wide, while Kael clenched his fists, his jaw tight.

— A... demon... Aria murmured, disgust barely audible. You're a demon.

Kael, throat tight, stared at Ryo with a mixture of horror and anger.

— And you expected what? That everything would go smoothly? That we would keep working together as if nothing had changed?

Ryo opened his mouth to respond, but the words died in his throat. He saw in his friends' eyes that glimmer of fear and disdain he had long dreaded. Their reactions were worse than he had imagined.

— We can't stick around with a demon, Ryo, Kael spat, his tone laden with anger. You lied to us, you hid. How do you expect us to trust you again?

Aria slowly nodded, a look of disgust twisting her features.

— If this demon breaks free... what will happen? We could all die because of you.

Ryo wanted to say something, but no words came. His friends, the ones he trusted most, were rejecting him. He had never seen such fear and anger in their eyes.

— Ryo, Aria whispered, looking down. You should leave.

Kael turned away, crossing his arms, his face closed off.

— Yes. We can't stay with you. Not with what you are.

Ryo felt his heart tighten. He had hoped his friends would understand.

The rain had stopped, but the night's humidity still clung to Ryo's skin as he walked away from the city. Isolated, rejected by his friends, he knew he had no other choice: he had to confront the truth of his existence.

Beneath a gnarled tree in a clearing, Ryo sat cross-legged, closing his eyes. The oppressive silence of the forest surrounded him, but inside, it was a storm. The voice of the demon resonated still, louder than ever.

— "Free me..."

Ryo clenched his fists. No, he would not yield. He had to learn to control this power, to master it before it consumed him. Taking a deep breath, he began to draw on the dark energy that lay dormant within him, feeling it slowly invade his limbs. It was dangerous, he knew. But it was the only way to survive.

The demon's power spread throughout his body, burning every fiber of his being, like a fire he had to contain. Bolts of dark energy coursed through his hands, ready to unleash uncontrollable chaos.

— "I will dominate you," he whispered between labored breaths.

The demon laughed in his mind, but Ryo did not give in. Not yet. If he wanted to regain control of his life, he had to dominate this dark force before it completely destroyed him.
